April seems pretty solid to me. I have not seen Master of the House or Il Sorpasso and will Blind Buy them both. Breaking the Waves has been way overdue for a quality release so this is great news. For those showing disappointment, I’m not sure what you expect each month, but this month’s selections are what Criterion is about and IMO they are living up to their standards.

Kind of disappointed, however each month can't please everyone

Il Sorpasso looks interesting and Riot In Cell Block 11 sounds like it could be an entertaining film, but Master of the House? Not sure how entertaining what sounds like a silent family drama would be.

I actually have The 400 Blows here from Netflix but I haven't watched it yet, so I'll reserve judgement on that one. Breaking the Waves just sounds... awful (for me, I know it gets a lot of love around here) so it'll be something I might check out eventually through a rental or something.

My copy of the UK release of Like Someone In Love showed up today from AmazonUK, so I'm obviously not one of those magical people who effect Criterion announcements based on their import purchases.

Default The Third Man

I have The Third Man Criterion still sealed and can't decide if I should sell it or hang on to it. I've just been laid off for a few weeks and could make good use of the $. What would you guys do?

Disappointing the April slate. I love The 400 Blows but I already own the current disc. I think it could use a new transfer though. As one of their earliest titles, it's not really up to par with the quality of their newer releases (barring the one or two disasters).

I still own and love the Antoine Doinel set. Disappointed an upgrade wasn't announced.

This is what I absolutely HATE about this place. People take this stance that you should never be disappointed. As if it's impossible to not like something or get excited about something each month. Also, it's what Criterion is about to you. Please allow me to define and keep my own expectations on a company that has such a wide array of releases month over month.

OMG Il Sorpasso! Finally! Now this is a major surprise. Day One for me. Saw this film around twenty odd years ago on a poor VHS copy, and it had no subtitles. My dad had to translate the film for me as it went along.

Don't care about the others, I'm afraid.

Personally, I'd sell it and get the Lionsgate version.

Add me to the group disappointed by no Doinel Blu-ray set. I'm also not familiar with the other films announced for April.

For those people that plan to buy Master of the House and only watch it once in your life, you can save money and just watch the movie for free on youtube:

If you want (need) the dollars, put it on ebay.

If you want the kudos, sell it here at cost!

Private Hell 36 is an Olive Films title, but here's the review that I posted for the movie.
It's good. It's really good. In fact, it's probably one of my top ten film noir movies.

Don Siegel is best known for his work with Clint Eastwood (The Beguiled, Dirty Harry, Escape from Alcatraz, etc.), but his early flicks are equally amazing.
Sold!

That is fine if that is how you feel. I'm just expressing my thoughts too. It seems like every month people get angry and write off films because they wanted something else. It is not just this month; I am talking about every month. Yes, Criterion is about films like Scanners and Eraserhead, but what they also excel in is bringing films that would never see the light of day like Master of the House, La vie de bohème and Il sorpasso to disc.

Every 15th of the month all I read is people complaining about the announcements and "Where's...?", "It looks like my wallet will get a rest this month", "I never heard of these films", "Third month in a row with crap...where's The Life Acquatic", or "Why not more mainstream films?" If you go to the main page column it is all mostly negative comments. Makes me feel that people do not understand what Criterion is all about.

As long as Criterion releases one title a month that I really want to purchase, I am satisfied with that month's slate. I don't expect to love, or even be interested in, every title that they release.

The release of Breaking the Waves fills that quota for me (and it is being released 10 days before my birthday). I assume that it will be the original version of the film, and not the censored version that was released on U.S. dvd.

Looking forward to Riot in Cell Block 11, which I've actually never seen. I'll probably stick with my DVD of Master.

Maybe I missed it, but the people targeting the people who politely express disappointment FAR outnumber anyone who is crude in their criticism. And I don't believe anyone has made any negative comments, expressing disappointment isn't negative in itself.

The only thing in that film that needs cutting is the final shot, should have cut with everyone looking up confused and wondering what was happening...

Also love how the cover reflects the chapter styles from the film :-).

I am so glad that the New Year's clue was Breaking the Waves instead of It's a Wonderful Life. Don't get me wrong, I love It's a Wonderful Life, but I already own the Paramount blu-ray. I own AntiChrist and Melancholia on blu-ray, so I am looking forward to this as well.
