It's much cheaper to buy replacement cases here.

I just finished watching Billy Wilder's The Lost Weekend, starring Ray Milland, and I loved it. It's a powerful movie that does not pull punches with its depiction of alcoholism, and it's the strongest acting that I've seen from Milland.

I still have not seen a Wilder film that I did not love, and I'm starting to doubt if I ever well.

I bought this DVD from the dollar store not too long ago because I was tired of waiting for a Region A Blu-ray. It's probably just a matter of time, because this is quite an iconic film and a Best Picture winner. I'd love to see Criterion handle this one as a domestic counterpart to the MoC Blu-ray, but I expect that Universal will handle it if they are handling Double Indemnity.

There are Wilder films I do not love, but there are none that I do not like.

Well, except for two of his earliest -- The Major and the Minor and Five Graves to Cairo -- and his last, Buddy Buddy. And those only because I haven't seen them.

(And there are only three others that I don't have on some format in my collection: Mauvaise graine, The Front Page, and Fedora.)

I would certainly say the odds of Universal letting Criterion have The Lost Weekend are much higher than Double Indemnity. They did a 2-disc Legacy DVD of DI, but Lost Weekend has only ever had an old 1-disc (initially released in 2001), with some subsequent cover art updates.

Fantastic news about Criterion adding some Almodovar to the collection. I've not yet seen Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! but the few other works of his I've seen are phenomenal.

Just wanted to get an opinion from fellow forum members, if you had to choose from one of the following criterions, which would you choose? All would be a blind buy for me.

City Lights
Paths of Glory
8 1/2
The 39 Steps
Richard III

THANKS

I love City Lights, so I say City Lights. Anything Chaplin is a safe pick, imo.

Paths of Glory is another good blind buy.

8 1/2, I suggest you check out first before purchasing.

Paths of Glory, City Lights and 8 1/2 are a three way tie for me in terms of brilliance. All Fantastic buys!

I believe that 8 1/2 is on Netflix Instant, probably the only film there that shouldn't be blind-bought.

My favorite of that bunch is "The 39 Steps." However, looking at your collection I think you would enjoy "Paths of Glory" the most.

Seems like Paths of Glory is the way to go, definitely into Kubrick and war movies, so think that's what I'll go for, thanks for the advice everyone!

I'll admit, I first thought the clue was for TLAWSZ and I was happy because people could finally stop begging for it, but I am content either way!
I enjoyed those, too, and he's probably one of my 10 favorite directors. As good as those are, Scottie, you need to see Talk to Her (flat out masterpiece) and Bad Education. TTH has one of the best screenplays you'll ever see anywhere!

I've heard phenomenal things about it. I wish they'd release a Blu-ray of it soon.

Okay, I'll be the dissenting opinion. I would rank them as follows:

City Lights / The 39 Steps (tie, depending whether you prefer Chaplin or Hitchcock)
8 1/2
Paths of Glory
Richard III

Since seeing the new Raro Video/Kino Blu-ray about a week or so ago, I rather prefer Francesco Rosi's somewhat similar MANY WARS AGO (UOMINI CONTRO) to Kubrick's PATHS OF GLORY. Criterion's PATHS OF GLORY Blu-ray, however, is definitely a crisper image on a big screen.
