It appears the DVD-only versions of A Brief History of Time, Il Sorpaso, etc will be bare-bones (or very near to bare-bones). Interesting.

I recorded TCM's broadcast of Babette's Feast today so I'm looking forward to seeing it.
Such a wonderful film! Caught the last half or so of the TCM showing, which made me finally open the shrink-wrap on the Blu-ray so I could watch the bonus features after dinner (with a nice glass of wine). Really need to watch the whole thing again on the Blu-ray one of these days.

Just a little heads up...

The upcoming Criterion title, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, will be on TCM on February 18.

And I suggest everyone watches it because it is one of the most magical, tragic films I've ever seen. Plus, the color palate Jacques Demy uses is divine.

My DVR has been set, as it looks excellent.

I also have Au Hasard Balthazar on my DVR, another film considered to be one of the most depressing things ever.

Cherbourg is sublime. Hoping the Blu does its gorgeous visuals justice.

I am ecstatic for this and the other Demys. I love Umbrellas and Lola.

saw La Notte last night...

not exactly full of spoilers, but if you haven't seen it, then don't bother.

[Show spoiler]The good:
1 - man, Jeanne Moreau brings the goods... I imagine that the art film directors loved casting her because she seems to have had quite a dynamic acting range just in her face alone. There really doesn't need to be much of a plot because her face tells it all. I also hated her in Jules and Jim, which for me, means that she accomplished something indeed.
2 - some of the best b&w cinematography I can recall seeing anywhere.

The bad:
1. I'd probably warm up to it more on a second viewing, but some of the dialogue sailed over my head - a conversation had on some lawn chairs near the pool a the midway point of the film and the quoted line that Mastroianni says was said smugly near the end of the film. ??
2. Monica Vitti was just 'okay' for me. She didn't really exude as much sexuality, as say, Anna Karina does. Perhaps the role doesn't call for it, but anyway...
3. I didn't find the story of their failed relationship that interesting. The cinematography was enough to hold me over, but I feel that w/o it, it'd be somewhat of a miserable viewing experience.

with all that said, I'd watch it again some day. the photography alone made it worth seeing.

If the screenshots from the French release are anything to go by, it's going to be stunning.

No.

No.

Seriously, though. I watched this the other night and was so distracted by her beauty that I missed some subtitles. Granted, I will say she doesn't look her best due to that unfortunate hairdo. That would kill anyone else's sexuality. But she still manages to look drop dead gorgeous. She looks better in Antonioni's other films, I admit; that's about as close to perfection as any woman can get.

Anna Karina, too.. Okay, I'll stop.

Sorry that you were disappointed. La Notte was one of my favorite Criterion titles from last year, though.

I cannot remember everything that I wrote about it in my User Review a few months back, except that I love how the movie utilizes architecture and cityscapes to reflect the emotions of the characters.

Anna Karina in Vivre Sa Vie, Irene Jacob in The Double Life of Veronique. Maybe even Jean Moreau in Elevator to the Gallows, although the thought crossed my mind that she is a bit homily (probably a testament to her range as an actress) I'd choose all of those over Monica Vitti - the Monica Vitti in THIS ROLE. I'll get back to you when I've seen the other films.

I read your review earlier today, Owl. (Really well done, btw..) I think that I enjoyed those same aspects of La Notte. For me, however, it wasn't enough to sustain interest for a 2 hour film.

Once you see her with blonde hair, you'll be won over. I find her just as sexy in Red Desert, but that might not be for everyone's taste.

Anna Karina in Vivre Sa Vie (that haircut *gulp*), Irene Jacob in Veronique, and Binoche in Unbearable Lightness of Being would be my cinematic crushes - next to Vitti, of course.
