Which is why I totally understand if someone doesn't like Wes Anderson because even though his filmic abilities have increased over the years, he more or less has the same style and themes he had with Bottle Rocket. Me..I like what Wes Anderson does, but I can see how his films can be love them or hate them.

Nah, and his style in Bottle Rocket is not at all the same of the one in Moonrise Kingdom.

People can whine about how he likes to implement his own aesthetic in his films. There's nothing wrong with it. Technically, that's what an auteur is supposed to do. You could toss around the same criticisms to Malick, Ozu, Bergman, and, to an extent, Paul Thomas Anderson.

Does anyone know about the transfer for the upcoming Breaking the Waves? Wasn't this shot on film, edited on tape, and then that tape was transferred to film?

Is there a source that discusses that?

You are correct on how it was originally done.

As for what they're doing for the BD, everyone who presumably knows is keep mum. Only thing they're saying is that it's a new 4K restoration. One might suppose that they scanned a film print at 4K, did whatever restoration work was necessary, and are using that as their source.

so I'm in on the David Lean box set... bought it for $46.50 shipped brand new AND got $10.20 reward money back to put towards my next purchase (probably Purple Noon or Au Revoir Les Enfants) which will make either of those two movies around $11.50

Bottle Rocket? Who the heck was wearing a track suit in Bottle Rocket??

Directors hit their "style" a few films into their filmography, once they think they've made their "one" film that establishes their immortality, and THEN they stop evolving.*
In this case, we can assume EVERY Wes Anderson film from here on in will have the same "Family portrait" poster from Royal Tennenbaums.

(In fact, if it wasn't for the complete Asperger's-like removal from all real human emotion, I would've forgotten he'd done Rushmore, either.)

----
(* - Consider Tim Burton making Beetlejuice before Edward Scissorhands, for example, or Terry Gilliam making Time Bandits before "Brazil".)

My Criterion DVD set of The Killers arrived today.

A long time ago, there were these huge black double-disc DVD cases that were formidable, sturdy, and awesome. These cases were believed to have become extinct when a meteor crashed into the Earth and caused an ice age, but occasional reports of present-day sightings continue to baffle the scientific community. I've always been skeptical, but seeing is believing, and I'm actually seeing one right now.

I'll be busy for the next day or so, but am hoping that I can chill out to watch these two films tomorrow night and Sunday night.

Not sure why the first 2 came out with such an orange hue to them.

Oh well.

That orange hue was the filmmaker's original intent, and that's how these photos looked in theaters, VHS, and DVD. Your third photo is indicative of a horribly-botched "4K remaster" for the new Blu-ray, and this is a true case of the revisionism that is resulting in releases that do not reflect how the film is supposed to look.

If I were you, I would post this in the following main forum threads to express indignation...
Rocky 4K remaster
Halloween 35th Anniversary Blu-ray
Criterion Blu-ray of Thief

P.S.: Actually, please do not post this in those forums.

Uh, yes, just like every other auteur I listed. Doesn't mean that style is only suited for one film.

I ordered theif today. As a Mann and neo noir fan, and a life long Chicagoian I am pretty excited to check it out for the first time. I paid a little more than I like to for one film but this really sounds like something I'd love.

Well after viewing it you took heat off your number one and it completely disappeared off your list so that says something to me.

Yeah, I definitely feel that Thief has a lot of the same themes and symbolism as Heat. Although, I find Thief to be a more rewarding watch. Plus, that Tangerine Dream score.....
