Well, not quite. StudioCanal might've been perfectly happy to renew the license with Criterion, but they'd signed an overall licensing deal with Lionsgate for titles in the StudioCanal collection. Once Criterion's license lapsed, Lionsgate automatically got it, as they did with The Third Man.

I, for one, would love it if they can get WB's greasy neon claws off of Bringing Out the Dead.
Scorsese certainly has had a good working relationship with Criterion. In addition to the World Cinema Collection and The Last Tempation of Christ, he also did the commentary with Michael Powell for Black Narcissus, which goes back to their original laserdisc edition of the film.

Interesting factoid: the Criterion LD of Black Narcissus was the very first home video release with director commentary; previous commentaries (all from Criterion) were by film critics and historians.

But, Criterion also did LDs (with commentaries by Scorsese) of Taxi Driver and Raging Bull (and Last Temptation) as well as A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies.

As you suggest, some of Scorsese's films are with Warner, and a number of others are with Sony, which wasn't licensing much out until a couple of years ago. I suppose it's not out of the realm of possibility that Criterion might be able to put out editions of Taxi Driver and Raging Bull.

Just got my flash sale order. I don't know if I was one of the lucky golden ticket winners (I didn't have a ticket of any sort) or if they just made a mistake but they included Things To Come in my order for free!

Raging Bull is MGM, so yes. But it's already had several different releases.

By the way, in April, I am going to try to watch a bunch of Criterion movies I (A) have not seen, or (B) have not finished. How does this sound?

Blow Out
The Brood
Carnival of Souls
Cronos
The Darjeeling Limited
Dead Ringers
Easy Rider
The Game
Gimme Shelter
Godzilla
Head
Island of Lost Souls
The Last Temptation of Christ
The Man Who Fell to Earth
Naked Lunch
Peeping Tom
Quadrophenia
Rosemary's Baby
The Royal Tenenbaums
Rushmore
Sid and Nancy
Slacker
Something Wild
Thief
Things to Come
Withnail and I

Nice! Good movie, but I've never seen the CC version. I have the double feature "Harryhausen" release that includes the original version and colorized version. (It also includes the original She (both B&W and colorized) and The Most Dangerous Game)

Granted I'm sure the CC version is top notch in the PQ department but the double feature is still a nice pickup.

I've never seen it and it has been intriguing to me since it was released. I love the cover art. I'm really happy with getting it, one less I don't need to buy!

By the way Tokyo Story was one of the most (if not the most) powerful movies I've ever watched. I've never been a fan of "family dramas", and if you told me I'd enjoy it I would've probably laughed at you... but it hit home on so many levels (I didn't identify with the children in the movie but it still made me step back and take stock of my own relationship with my parents).

I hope you enjoy it as well.

Cul De Sac looked interesting as well, I keep looking at it but have yet to pick it up.

I did not receive a Golden Ticket in my package that arrived in the mail today.

However...

I did receive a Veronica Lake movie in high definition. That's even better than a Golden Ticket.

Agreed, my vote would be to After Hours, but not sure who owns the rights for that.

If I were you, I would email Criterion to let them know that they shipped a movie that you did not order. Chances are, they'll probably just tell you to keep it, but it'll be good for them to know what happened with the stock.

Up until a few months ago, I would have said The King of Comedy too.

I received an email from Criterion for each order as it was shipped.

Check your Spam folder with your email account for the past few days, because the Criterion shipping email might have been sent to there if this was your first time placing an order. Your email provider might have consider messages from Criterion to be junk mail.

My order can still be cancelled. Looks like I have answered my own question and everything will only be sent once The Great Beauty is released. Downside, no chance of a winning ticket

I began the day with Jules and Jim. I will admit that I was a bit underwhelmed by the entire film, but I definitely respect Truffaut, as well as the impact it has had on the world.

The real meat and potatoes of the day was Seven Samurai! It's easily the single best experience a person could have with ANY film. Absolutely PHENOMENAL!
