There's a 1979 South Bank Show episode on the Tess BD from the time he was promoting the film. It includes clips from a number of films of his or that were influences on him: Tess, Knife in the Water, Cul de Sac, Olivier's Hamlet, his Macbeth.

However when it gets to Chinatown, the clip that was included in the episode has been crudely edited out and replaced with a modern shot of a production still from the scene - there's a jump and they refer to the clip we didn't see. This clearly means Criterion didn't have the rights to include that clip. However it means they did have the rights to include the clips of Macbeth, along with the other four films, which are already in their catalog

Hopefully we'll see Macbeth from them soon

I'd buy that for a dollar.

I'd like Macbeth. Read it my sophomore year in high school and it's one of my favorite Shakespeares. I've enjoyed what I've seen of Polanski's work so far.

Still undecided about Tess though. I'm not big on period romantic dramas but Nastassja Kinski is so gorgeous.

It's a stunning film, and beautiful to watch (I have the French blu and will get the Criterion eventually). Those magic hour scenes are even more stunning than Nastassja.

I don't know how else to put it, but I've always wanted to do a double bill of Tess and Barry Lyndon. I don't know if that helps in any way.

I had the same Nastassja Kinski reason for purchasing Tess and Cat People (although the bad transfer convinced me to hold off from the latter purchase). She is also gorgeous in Paris, Texas.

The New Line DVD set has four of them. I've watched both Movie Crazy and The Milky Way and found them both solid 30s comedies. It's a bit different vibe than his silent films, but he plays similar characters (the go-getting 20/30-something everyman).

perhaps this post from Feb 20th, 2009 could begin to explain the disdain that had seemed to have been built up by those who were not looking forward to The Life Aquatic. Notice the caps and the 'WHERE IS..?' as if it should have been at the top of CC's list of upgrades.

The documentary is decent. He really covers all of world cinema, which is admirable, but because he covers so much the discussions of some films and directors can feel brief. Also, the narration is REALLY annoying...be prepared for 15 hrs of upspeak. But it is a decent intro to film art.

In spite of this, I commend the guy for making a documentary that is so audacious. I just don't think it works.

I watched The Story of Film when TCM was broadcasting it in weekly installments. Mark Cousins and Robert Osbourne did a 2-3 minute intro for each episode and I think that helped me get used to his way of speaking but I can understand the criticism. He speaks softly and, combined with his accent, that has a rock you to sleep type of effect. The main benefit of seeing it on TCM was that they showed quite a few of the films he discusses. Many were new to me (and TCM) and gave me a chance to see them for perhaps the one and only time. As others have mentioned; a very ambitious project that, in many cases, only whets the appetite for more information.

More Nastassja Kinski, is always a good thing.

Back in better days of this thread (before the power posting became unbearable), people were posting about their favorite criterion ladies. It was interesting to say the least.

I've got the Cat People Blu-ray, and I don't mind the picture quality. I know that it's trite to say that the transfer is at least a step up from the DVD, but I'm just glad to be able to say that. This is a fun movie that deserves a better treatment, but what we've got now is acceptable.

I think that Nastassja Kinski was at her most beautiful in Paris, Texas.
