Maybe I'll actually understand the movie after I see it on the big screen, but I won't make any bets as such. I don't think that I'll ever truly understand this one.
For me, it's one of those films where understanding doesn't get in the way of enjoying!

MUBI users: Fritz Lang's Dr. Mabuse: The Gambler just got added. It's not (yet) a Criterion title, but its sequel is, and I'd argue this is the better of the two (though both are brilliant). The 4.5 hour run time may seem daunting for some, but it absolutely breezes by. This is by far one of my favorite films from the silent era and I highly recommend some of you check it out while it's available for the next month.

This is true. It's a beautiful film to watch, and I always stumble on different ways to relate to it.

For what it's worth, Warner Archive is having it's fifth and final birthday sale at the moment (5 for $50), and The Breaking Point is one of the titles that's part of the sale (as well as the first six of their so-far-eight Blu-ray releases).

Just last night I ordered the four BDs that I didn't already have, plus a DVD-R Nick Carter Mysteries triple feature (the first two of the Nick Carters were directed by Jacques Tourneur).

According Chris that runs criterionforum.org, "the notes on the transfer for this edition say they made a 6k scan from the original 35mm negative and 35mm interpositive."

Thanks for the heads up! How long is it going on for? I unfortunately don't get paid till the end of the week.
I actually do also have a place around here that sells all the Archive titles but it'd be pretty cool to get it at a good price.
Its also at an unfortunate time as I need all my money for this Cronenberg retrospective this month and Persona.

I've never been to that theater (only art house theater I've been to in Atlanta is the Plaza, if you can ever consider it one), but I have been to other Landmark theaters. Just looked up the schedule for that theater. A Woman Under the Influence, Beauty and the Beast (1946) and Au Revoir, Les Enfants are playing in the coming weeks. Oh, how I wish I still lived near Atlanta.

My God you had to go back 5-6 whole pages to get your answers . It's a huge amount of reading for you, I guess ? And how does 6 become 20+ ? Please enlighten me

You're welcome for the link that I posted, btw.

Simply put, I don't have the time you do, seeing as you went through however many pages looking for my posts. I honestly don't have the time to read 5 pages with 20 responses each.

Don't really know, sorry to say. It's described as "the final week", but I don't know when their "week" started. I've been low on disposable funds lately myself, so I haven't been paying attention to their sales.

In the good old day, around the time George Lefont reopened the Plaza, he also owned the Screening Room at Peachtree Battle, the Garden Hills Cinema in the Garden Hills Plaza, the Screening Room at Broadview Plaza, and the Tara (although the last played more mainstream movies). The artiest of all, though, was the Rhodes, which Lefont did not own.

In the late '70s and early '80s there was no shortage of places in Atlanta to see non-mainstream movies. And I can still tell you which of those I saw many specific movies in.

Haven't seen this. What are people's view on this film here? Lars is kind of hit or miss with me...not sure if I wanna blind buy this. I liked Antichrist and Meloncholia (but not as much), Europa and Dancer in the Dark were decent for me, pretty much hated Dogville and Nymphomaniac. Think I might like it?

I've had a good old time seeing Seven Samurai, Breathless, and Solaris at Midtown Art Cinema for these Tuesday Classics. Sadly, I'll probably miss the last three movies, but 8 1/2 will be quite an experience.

Plaza Theatre and Midtown Art Cinema are my go-to places for off-the-beaten-path movies these days, although I also make it to Tara Cinemas every once in a while.

I personally haven't seen it, but people claim it's his best film. It's usually always on a premium channel, so I'd recommend DVRing it first if you're on the fence.

Yeah, it was on a week ago or so, but it was right in the middle of it so I didn't bother. I wish I still had DVR but had to cut bills...those were the days.

Just a little heads-up...

Demy's The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and Lola (two upcoming Criterion releases) will be on TCM on April 11th and Fellini's Night of Cabiria will be on TCM on April 13.

What about Australia? I couldn't go without Picnic at Hanging Rock. As for the rest

USA: 3 Women
Japan: Tokyo Story
Sweden: Fanny and Alexander
France: The 400 Blows
Italy: 8 1/2
UK: *shrugs*... maybe Brazil?

Thanks for the heads up, iScottie! I love catching films like these on TCM. Just put them on my calendar.

I'm guessing that he didn't include Australia (or a number of other countries) simply because there weren't enough Criterion Blu-rays from those countries to make for a meaningful response.

I mean, there are only two Australian films on Blu-ray from Criterion (Walkabout being the other one).

Speaking of Criterion on TCM, just got around to watching Red River which aired earlier this week. Loved it, lots of dark material in a similar vein to 3:10 to Yuma. Glad I pre-ordered this on Amazon when it was still $25-30ish!
