I've only seen about 1/2 of the film. Several years back I borrowed the DVD from the library. It froze in the middle of the film.

Thanks for the information.

Doesn't Criterion usually make an announcement of some sorts?

I'd like to see The Emerald Forest again. I saw it on VHS back when I was in high school, and was initially taken aback, because the movie is really nothing like what the TV trailers lead me to believe it would be. The movie was advertised heavily by commercials that made it look as though it were simply about Powers Boothe going into the jungle to rescue his son and to administer a brutal beatdown to the tribe of kidnappers. One I grasped the eco-awareness vibe of the story, though, I fell in line and loved it.

Pretty sure this was on one of their lists of films going out of print a while ago. I picked it up then so as not to miss it. Maybe they've just now exhausted their inventory?

It may take a while for the film's stock to run out. It's not exactly one of CC's most popular films (Then again, it's not Border Radio).

I've got a $10 gift card to Barnes & Noble, and the B2G1 sale is still going on, so I just reserved these three titles to pick up after work...

Red River
Paths of Glory
The Four Feathers

I want to buy Red River sooner rather than later, because I want the digipak to be in good condition.

I owned Paths of Glory and The Four Feathers on Criterion DVD, but I've put off upgrading both of them to Blu-ray in favor of others. I've had a yearning to revisit both of them lately, so it's time to pull that trigger already.

Really?
I wouldn't have thought that such a title would come from Criterion!
I have only seen the film once in my childhood and one scene has stuck me.

[Show spoiler]a native puts his finger in a shot wound of a person, and then tastes it! I think it was something like this

I would love this to come from them!
From what I remember it has spectacular cinematography!!

Is it necessary to watch L'avventura, La Notte, and L'eclisse in that order or can they watched out of order? Thinking about picking up La Notte and L'eclisse but might wait until L'avventura gets upgraded.

I think Criterion should upgrade their Monsters and Madmen box set. What was the last 50s sci fi title they released? The Blob?

No. It's a thematic trilogy. None of the films are directly connected.

In addition use this coupon when you go there to take $5 off of your order ( http://images.barnesandnoble.com/pim...Hvk-_-10:1&r=1 ), you can also try the $8 off of $40 too( http://images.barnesandnoble.com/pim...Hvk-_-10:1&r=1 ). And if you do not have a membership just apply for the free 2 month online before you go and then it will still be 'free' for the 50% criterion sale in July at which point you can then cancel it. And with the membership you get 10% off in store

Just a little heads-up on that on Monday, June 9, TCM will be showing Black Orpheus, City Lights, and Orpheus, as well as the 1924 version of The Thief of Baghdad.

You folks may want to check them out.

I am not knocking Oshima's directing necessarily, as I think he did an overall decent job considering the material that he was directing, but I thought the story and the entire events surrounding the film were both terrible. I'm not questioning the validity of what actually transpired, but I had a hard time believing that everything thrown to the audience was fact.

I'm really trying my best not to knock Oshima's directing as I guess he did a decent job with the material he was filming, but it's hard not to take a negative attitude at times with it.

I don't know, I'm just really conflicted with my feelings right now.

Long story short: I didn't like it.
Would replacing sex with cocaine or alcohol change any of your criticisms?

If you replace sex with cocaine would anything thrown at the audience seem all that hard to believe? Would the downward spiral have seemed more believable then?

And yeah, In the Realm of the Sense can be kind of tedious and hard to watch but so was something like The Days of Wine and Roses . Movies about self-destructive behavior can get uncomfortable and the self-destructive behavior itself can get pretty boring.

In fact, that's usually one of the main paths in drug/alcohol films - the appeal of behavior that initially seems cool or fun or edgy quickly wears off and becomes first tedious and then ugly.

I'm not necessarily saying In the Realm of the Senses is a great movie but it's pretty good. It's not the best addiction movie but it's one of the better ones and off the top of my head I can't think of a better sex addiction movie (Shame didn't even come close).

Much appreciated! I was able to use both of those coupons in conjunction with my membership and my $10 gift card.

I wish I saw this before I bought three CCs today.

Idk if this has been pointed out, but one of the managers at my B&N said they will be having a 40% off of all blu-rays the week after the B2G1 sale ends...starting June 3 I think.

Well, I head to B&N today to pick up Breaking The Waves, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and Thief. Was disappointed that The Life Aquatic was selling in store for $39.99, since I saw it online for $29.01. Thief and Breaking The Waves, however, were both selling for 20% the sticker price. Turns out, they use the sale price for the B1G1 free sale, so I ended up paying $35.99 for The Life Aquatic and Thief, but got Breaking The Waves for free. Ended up paying about $77. Tried to use one of my coupons but it wasn't valid they said...

You're not Greek and probably have seen them, and I haven't.
But I wanted to feel more mature to be ready to watch them.

The screenshots from the Blurays I've seen seem to retain good grain structure, fortunately.
There are some contrast issues with the black levels and such (they seem like dark gray), but I believe this is the source's issue. Not the restoration's.

What film(s) would you say is (are) the best?
Hi filmmusic,

Yes, of course. These releases are from my collection.

The Traveling Players and Voyage to Cythera are two films that I like a lot. Both offer a glimpse at a country that no longer exists.

Viewing Days of 36 will likely be a very interesting experience for you because there are plenty of political observations in it. You can see how the country was divided (and still is).

The Weeping Meadow I also saw theatrically and it is a very, very beautiful film. (The sequence with the black flags is extraordinary).

The restorations are excellent. As far as I know the original film elements were used, and Mr. Angelopoulos was also consulted. Pretty much all of the director's films can now be seen on DVD -- many were also released by Artificial Eye in the UK after the Greek releases came out -- so it should not be difficult to track them down.

Criterion should have added at least one of his films to the Collection, possibly Ulysses Gaze with Harvey Keitel, or Eternity and a Day with Bruno Ganz, since he has a tremendous reputation outside of Greece.

In addition to Greece, Eastern Europe has very important and influential directors whose work should be popularized in North America.

Have a wonderful week, filmmusic, and I will see you on the forums

Pro-B

Red River arrived today thanks to the kind folks at Amazon. (Gamestop could learn a lesson, my copy of Watch Dogs that I pre-ordered in 2013 shipped today.... at 8am).

I've really been into Westerns lately. I was out yesterday and picked up a nice stack of Western blu-rays for a great price.

Hang 'Em High
The Cowboys
(came with The Searchers which I already own and Green Berets which I didn't)
The Horse Soliders
The Comancheros

Also snagged The Barbarian and the Geisha.

All for about $30ish total. (no discounts/coupons were used)

Add those to the stack with The Professionals, How the West Was Won; My Name is Nobody and High Noon which I've finished watching in the last 2-3 days and I've got a lot of stuff to cover!

Red River arrived in perfection condition through Amazon. I can't wait to check it out. I'll use this new release as an opportunity to watch Stagecoach, as well.

Last night I watched Rio Bravo. I thought it was decent overall, but I was definitely underwhelmed by it.

Looking forward to whatever other westerns Criterion decides to release.

Good points that I didn't think about.

I don't think I would have been intrigued by whatever the medium was used to convey the addiction, but I certainly see it in a new light.
