Sleep, My Love is the only Douglas Sirk film that I've seen to date. I suck at life.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of his film as they are gradually upgraded, because I postponed checking out the movies on DVD.

Someone posted these coupons a few days ago, and they helped me buy Red River, Paths of Glory, and The Four Feathers for $62.

Not sure if they'll work still, but it's worth a shot.

Written on the Wind is one of my most rewatched Criterion DVDs, and it is one of my most wanted upgrades. You are in for a real treat when you finally get a chance to see it.

He'd probably have seen more if Kino got off their duffs and upgraded Lured and A Scandal in Paris to BD.

Me and you both. Was at least looking forward to the Sirk being a digipak as the cover artwork seemed to call for it (and it being only the 2nd release/the only upgrade this year from Criterion that I instantly wanted).

"California Dreamin'" just came on my Pandora mix. Makes me wish I could get a good price on Chungking Express.

haven't seen that one yet... I saw that it is on Netflix. maybe I'll bump it up in queue - especially because my wife usually prefers that we watch newer films.

I'm hoping Scanners and Picnic are digipak - the Scanners designer had artwork for inside so hopefully!

As much as I love Chungking Express, neither it nor any other movie comes to mind when I hear "California Dream'". I just think about how much I like The Mamas and the Papas (one of my favorite 60s groups; I love multi-part harmonies).

Judging from this it will be a digipak.

It's phenomenal. One of the best coming-of-age stories.

Sometime last year, Fish Tank was on my On Demand, and was expiring the very day that I noticed it there. Tried watching it, and only got about 15-20 minutes into it before I gave up. Just hated all the characters. After seeing a lot of positive comments about it in this thread, I tried again on Netflix a few months ago. Found I quite liked it. I must've just not been in the mood for it the previous time. Didn't love it, though, just liked it. Rated it 3/5 (6/10 on IMDb, so it was on the upper end of "I liked it").

So far, the only film on Netflix that I've given up on part-way through is Upstream Color. But again, it gets a lot of positive reviews, and Netflix thinks I'll give it 3.5 stars, so I might've just not been in the mood for it, so I figure I'll give it another shot sometime.

Has anyone purchased Walkabout recently and if so, have you experienced any skipping or freezing issues? I ask this because I am interested in purchasing it but a number of people over at criterionforum mentioned having these types of issues with their copy.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Beach Boys and Beatles, sure. But to be honest, when I think of 60s groups with great harmonies, I think of The Association ("Everything That Touches You"), The Temptations ("Psychedelic Shack"), and The 5th Dimension ("Aquarius"). And my favorite harmonious TMaTP song is "Twelve Thirty".

On edit: And actually, I have to confess that Pet Sounds doesn't really do that much for me. I prefer the Beach Boys in their earlier surf music style. Although my favorite song of theirs is by far the non-surfy "Heroes and Villains".

I imagine that anyone watching Chungking Express will come away from it either loving "California Dreamin'" or loathing it. The song that I came away from it loving to death was Faye Wong's Cantonese cover of The Cranberries' "Dreams" that played over the end titles.

yes, that Cantonese cover song did work nicely in that film. truth be told, I have had arguments in the past over the merits of Pet Sounds when compared to some of the Beatles work of the same ilk... I'm most definitely a Beatles fan through and through.

I'll see if I can seek out some of the songs you mentioned. I might know the tune, but not the name.
