Seven Samurai is two-discs, but I wouldn't be surprised if Criterion re-issued it in a Blu-ray + DVD combo pack in a similar fashion to The 400 Blows and Breathless.

As far as Fantastic Mr. Fox is concerned, I'm not sure. I do know that Criterion will be offering a two-disc replacement case for The Night of the Hunter, as they have had numerous issues with their DigiPack case for it.

Somehow I managed to avoid MDWA when it first came out when it was one of those "Oh, you've got to see this movie" topics on all the talk shows.
Honestly, the only time I'd want to have dinner with this guy is if I was awaiting execution and this was my last meal. The guards would all fall asleep and I could escape or he'd never shut up and I'd die of old age.
I had high hopes for it but it was a bomb on every level; actually now that I think about it, it has replaced Breathless as the worst CC title I've ever seen. At least Breathless had some cool B&W Cinematography of Paris and the beautiful Jean Seberg to look at.

Default Criterion Collection Discussion

I rented Kiss Me Deadly because I saw it on one of the top 10 criterion lists, and wow. That ending was something else alright, I didn't see that coming at all. Very good movie, the atmosphere, acting, pacing, and cinematography were all there for me. I would definitely pick this up in the future.

I also rented The Man Who Fell To Earth because Mike Allred had it on his top 10 list. When artists discuss movies very passionately it really makes me want to watch them for some reason. I'm also a fan of David Bowie and after last night's viewing of A Life Aquatic, it seems like I could use a little more Bowie in my life.

I also popped in Thief just to check the first scene and I can't turn it off for some reason.

Thumbs way up for Mike Allred. Is there a link for his top 10?

I watched Ace in the Hole last night, and what a phenomenal film it is. Although I've only seen Kirk Douglas in Path's of Glory and now this film, the man seems legendary to me, and his performance here is stellar. I also plan on watching Spartacus this week, as it's one of the only Kubrick films I have yet to see.

I highly recommend the Criterion BD for Ace in the Hole - the package comes with a neat fold out booklet that emulates a newspaper, which is thematic to the film.

Spartacus was the only film in the Kubrick boxset I couldn't get through. All of the others are stellar. Spartacus may require a revisit...

I have the boxed set as well, in addition to the Paths of Glory and The Killing Criterion BD's. Spartacus is the only one of his mainstream films left for me, and it looks like quite a chore, sitting at just over three hours. I will also watch Killer's Kiss, at some point, and perhaps Fear and Desire, although I've heard it's not that great. My rankings:

1) 2001: A Space Odyssey
2) The Shining
3) Dr. Strangelove
4) A Clockwork Orange
5) The Killing
6) Barry Lyndon
7) Paths of Glory
8) Eyes Wide Shut
9) Lolita
10) Full Metal Jacket

You gotta watch Out Of The Past if you're a fan of Kirk Douglas, he is a side character but he's good in it as well. The movie is also really good.

Oddly enough, I just added that to my "watch list" not even ten minutes ago - not because Kirk Douglas is in it, but because Robert Mitchum is in it, and I was investigating his Wikipedia page. I also need to re-watch the older Cape Fear at some point, too, as Mitchum and Peck are two of my favorite actors. Even Scorsese can't top it.

Somewhat related - for the past month or so, I've been reading Herman Melville's (Criterion related: Jean-Pierre Melville sniped his name from the author)Moby Dick on the train to work each morning. So recently, I just watched John Huston's 1956 version of Moby Dick starring Gregory Peck. While it's not phenomenal, I was actually very impressed with how well it was done, and it must have been considered a technical accomplishment at the time. A very enjoyable watch - although Peck doesn't portray evil as well as some other actors of his time.

I re-watched People on Sunday last night and I loved it this time around.

When I first saw the movie over a year or so ago, I was pretty cold towards it, perhaps because I just threw it in to pass the time, and not because I was specifically interested in watching it. Now, I have more silent films under my belt and I can see some common themes to other films of the past.

I felt People on Sunday is a bit similar to Lonesome, except the characters are a lot more broad.

Just ordered All that Heaven Allows from B&N.com for $15.99 with the coupon code mentioned earlier in this thread!

I tried to use that coupon to order Tightrope a few minutes ago, but Barnes & Noble would not let me. I used a 20% off coupon instead, though, and grabbed the Blu-ray for $7.69.

I might wait for the 50% off sale to grab L'Eclisse and All That Heaven Allows, since those are housed in safe plastic cases. I want to buy Picnic at Hanging Rock as soon as possible, though, to ensure that the digipak stays in decent shape.

From my understanding, in order to use the two $8 off codes, the transaction needs to be completed from the B&N mobile site - so I purchased them from Safari on my iPhone. It immediately drops the price to $15.99.

I, too, am looking forward to Picnic at Hanging Rock! That title falls outside of the 40% off window, though, which ends on 6/16. I'll be picking it up on July 8 after the 50% sale begins.

You'd be surprised.
(If you've already seen Paths of Glory, you KNOW "Never underestimate 50's Kirk Douglas." And if you've seen Ace in the Hole, I shouldn't have to tell you that. )

I've only heard that Fear and Desire is not that great, and can only speak from experience that Killer's Kiss is a student-film mess.

When looking over the Criterion BD releases, I realized I have ZERO Bergman films! I must remedy this in the coming sale. Can you guys recommend your top 3 Bergman releases?
