I say stop the DVD releases entirely. Seriously, who is going to shell out $20 per CC release when your decent BD player can be bought for $40-$50? Are you saying people would shell out $20 for a single DVD but would flat out refuse to get a player that plays both BD's and DVD's and stop buying your product as a result?
I know a lot of people say they do it for libraries and things like that but that has to be a huge minority of their business. Last edited by smoss469; 06-13-2014 at 11:28 PM. |

![]() Blu-ray players are stupidly cheap now. Majority of collectors willing to the pay the premium price Criterion ask should be able to get themselves a budget model at the least. And there DVDs will still play all the same ![]() |

Is anyone going to pick up Plain Archive's release of Blue is the Warmest Color that goes live this evening? The edition is limited to 400 for international customers. Their release of Melancholia is sublime!
For this release, there is the whole issue of how many copies of one movie does one need. There is the inevitable special edition later this year that I cannot wait for and I already have the barebones theatrical edition Criterion released earlier this year. So that's my debate. Anyone biting on the Plain Archive release? |

How is 20 dollars for a criterion now a premium price? I thought 20 dollars was a good price for a bluray movie. The bar keeps being lowered, how long until 10 dollars is a premium price? For the work that criterion puts into a release I don't see 20 dollars being some high end price for the whole package.

I love Dual Format :/ I don't want to buy a second Bluray player (and ship it to UK) just to watch in bedroom.....

I understand it but I don't like it.
On the other hand, now I have quite a few DVDs I'd like to buy knowing they won't be upgraded to DF in future; I was afraid of splurging $80 on Human Condition if they were to come out with a DF edition with the same exact content very soon after! |

Im sure this has been discussed before, but does Criterion have some specific criteria for the kinds of movies they release? Or is it mainly half the type of movie and half whatever they can get lisencing for?
For example, if for the sake of argument a big Hollywood movie that would make a ton of $ became available to them, are they likely to go ahead with it or pass because it doesnt meet the art/social significance they want to embody in their releases? Im just curious because many of their releases seem to fit perfectly with their little mission statement on the back covers, some seem a little over the top and self indulgent with the artistic douche baggery, and others seem to not fit in that well at all (like Armageddon, though I know that isn't a Criterion blu ray release) |

First they take the beautiful Digipaks from me for the new plastic case... now they remove Dual Format.... I am so boycotting Criterion for life. (until Monday :P) |

I have all their releases so far, including their OOP releases from previous company (Original Melancholia and Tree of life). They deserve the support - their releases are stunning and the quality that goes into the release is truly inspiring. |

Id hate for Criterion to go completely digital.
I adore having the physical copy and the beautiful artwork on my shelf. I feel like I own it, with digital I never feel like I own it lol |
