ha ha... well, the only thing better would be artificial scratch and sniff criterion movies! every movie would have its own unique scent... imagine the collectibility then! or at least, there should be a unique "scent" sticker or something inside the case that makes the movie smell unique to the packaging... imagine inviting friends over for a movie and before you put it on, one person asks "hey man, can i smell some of your criterions first?"... i'm kind of wondering what "antichrist" would smell like though..maybe criterion would put in a sulphur smell sticker in that one. ha.

Omg you should so pitch that idea! would be amazing... well... not until you smell Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodomy and Sweet Movie.

true, you'd have to be brave to smell the salo movie... but maybe that will only heighten its cult status.... i think the best movie for scratch and sniffing might be "babette's feast" though... could be a full course meal in one sticker like that scene in the willy wonka movie.

Let's just hope they don't mess up the scent for 'Fanny & Alexander'

I guess I am really in the minority. It's not that I don't care about the packaging... I just have no positive or negative opinions. I do not purchase Blu-rays, or, for that matter, Criterions. I buy movies. It is the film that matters to me. My movie collection is a library of films that I enjoy, and, like a library, all the "books" are not the same size... and I am ok with that.

Okay, I'm starting a new policy for the Criterion board--
Go put a dollar in the Salo-joke jar.

It must be hard - there is a lot of people to try make happy and they obviously can't please everyone, whatever they do they will upset/annoy someone.

Digging the theme tune to Zatoichi ^^

Baffled by the weird negative effect though lol - thought my copy was dodgy! lol

I wonder if Criterion will release Beyond the Hills. Been wanting to see it for a while, as I love 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days (which deserves a release.)

I keep meaning to buy BTH but keep forgetting, I was so excite by trailer and then the awards/reviews. 432 was INCREDIBLE, I loved it - would love to see both on Criterion.

Only because Criterion try to focus on the entire package of the film, its not just the film with Criterion, they hire incredible designers to get involved and present the films to us in the best way.

Yes the film is central, but the packaging is what we see, what is presented to us - that guides us to the film. They say you shouldn't judge a book by it s cover, which I say is wrong - its all part of the experience, the moment you look at the artwork it should lead you to the film and get your senses going and get you in the mood.

Most studios, the film is what they are presenting, but with Criterion its the artwork, the film, the supplements etc it is everything

Only like 20 minutes into Zatoichi and the imagery is stunning, so beautifully framed - love the black and white too.

I have a feeling it will be the next IFC release, followed by Like Father, Like Son (before the year is over).

I went to a Movie Stop while I was out of town on the way to visit my parents this afternoon, and I stumbled across this...

I've always wanted Pandora's Box on Criterion DVD, especially after seeing the movie referenced during a party sequence in Blue is the Warmest Color. I also love the OMD song that is based on the film.

The above DVD set was in perfect condition, and the stickers even cooperated when I was peeling them off.

I did a double-take at the $2.99, and so did the clerk. She told me that, if it ever comes out on Blu-ray, then I'll probably be able to sell this DVD for 10 times what I paid. The price was correct, but I'm not sure what the logic was behind it. No complaints, obviously.

Ah, yes. Indecent Proposal should be released by Criterion.

I think back in the 1980s, people's fingers got more exercise from all that remote control clicking as opposed to today when watching supplements on Blu-ray don't exactly involve finger-work as everything is more automatically organized. It's very tedious though with how laserdisc supplements were organized/executed and seemed like a lot of work.
The most interesting extra I'd ever come across on LD is something that qualifies as an Easter Egg, since it wasn't documented, and it's not something that someone would likely come across by accident -- though that's exactly how I came across it:

On the Image/Turner release of The Thing from Another World, one of the extras is the original novella by John W. Campbell Jr that is the basis for the film. That LD side is in CAV, so one steps through the story, page/frame at a time. If, however, you hit "play" at the start, you'll speed through the story while from your speakers you'll hear the audio from a teaser trailer for the John Carpenter remake.

It just occurred to me to wonder if this is mentioned in the entry for this title at the LDDB. Hold a mo'...nope, it isn't. I'll have to add that.

With the disc, I can always pop it in the player and play it still (pending if there's still electricity available).
You do realize that if there's an EMP, the chips in your player will probably get fried, so you're unlikely to be able to play anything whether power is available or not.
