It's a pretty standard Kurosawa samurai film. One of his later (1980) works. If you like his other films (as I do) chances are you'll like this one. The wikipedia entry summarizes the film plot well.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kagemusha

Quote:
It is set in the Warring States era of Japanese history and tells the story of a lower-class criminal who is taught to impersonate a dying warlord in order to dissuade opposing lords from attacking the newly vulnerable clan. The warlord whom the kagemusha impersonates is based on daimyo Takeda Shingen and the climactic 1575 Battle of Nagashino

Nope, they had two last year, one in July and one in Nov.

I enjoyed "Yojimbo." I haven't seen "Sanjuro" yet. I like good traditional Samurai. Good news. Thanks. I haven't seen it talked about much on here.

From what I have seen, Miss Danielle is a Geek lover. Not that that is a bad thing.

I really enjoyed Kagemusha, very much in the tradition of "Ran".

"Ran" is another I haven't seen. I am eagerly awaiting "Seven Samurai."

Thanks for the reply. I think I will move "Kagemusha" to the top of the Criterion next list.

Yes. The packaging is constructed very well, feels solid. Also, when lined up with other Criterion Blu-ray Boxsets (Che & Yojimbo/Sanjuro) you can not even tell it has a different package. Hope this helps!

well played,
also, the casing of a boxset of avant garde gems shouldn't matter!!! although it is in the end a kick ass and a half case!

A friend of mine is a manager at a B&N, and he said he hasn't heard any word of another sale, yet. But he also said he can't see why they wouldn't, because both sales, last year, were extremely successful.

I've been holding out for a long time, but I may end up breaking down and buying some of the titles I've been putting off before the next sale comes along.

Between the Criterion.com 25% off discount a few months ago and occasional low prices on Amazon and Deep Discount I've still managed to buy almost all the Criterion Blu's currently out. When either B&N or Deep Discount has another sale I imagine I'll expand to some Criterion DVD's and Eclipse sets.

I thought it was rumored June/July for the next sale.

I thought Kagemusha was pretty good. Probably contains some of the more beautiful photography of Kurosawa's films but I found Kagemusha to be a bit ponderous at times. The story just isn't as tight as Kurosawa's other "theatre" samurai epics like Ran or Throne of Blood. But hey, it's Kurosawa so you can't really go wrong. I did think the PQ was outstanding.

It is a shame that "Ran" is not available in the Blu-ray format from Criterion. From what I have read, the subtitles are all screwed up on the StudioCanal release, amongst other things.

Went to Hollywood Video because I heard about them closing and figured that their foreign video section titles would be for sale and wanted to see how many Criterion (and Kino) titles would be available... found some older Criterion but for those of you who have a Hollywood Video store still open, probably worth it to look for some of those OOP titles.

I managed to get the two titles Fellini's "And the Ship Sails On" and Bergman's "Autumn Sonata". Was hoping that they would have "Sid & Nancy", "Shock Corridor" or "Nights of Cabiria"...but nada. Also, picked up Kurosawa's "Dersu Uzala" (Kino). I get a feeling that there may not be much foreign video fans in my area as these discs look as they were untouched.
