Definetly need more Kubrick - and Barry Lyndon would be perfect - This film really shows off Kubricks skills as film maker.

ugh - Warner Home Video has the rights :/

I have, a very interesting look at France and some of those who stood with the Germans. Tough going at times but well worth it.

I'm still holding off on watching Shoah, because I know that will really depress me.

That's reassuring, I'll probably get up the strength to pop it in now.

S&P ain't for everyone, I'm trying to imagine someone that I would recommend it to, and I'm drawing a blank. The average WWII buff will be bored to tears inside of 10 - 15 minutes, I would guess. It's just not real accessible, IMHO. I don't see it as CC fodder. If you get a chance, watch it and let me know if you disagree.

Okay. Will do.

I am by no means a WWII buff, although, as I have expressed before.. I find the German occupation of France and the Resistance efforts to be very fascinating. I did watch the 30 minute short film that is on Army of Shadows about the end of the occupation. (Interesting that it was narrated by Noel Coward) Some of the footage was interesting, but even with that I wasn't compelled to move past 18 minutes or so.

TS&TP has received great reviews, though. I'll report back when and if I see it.

Thanks!

Another film that is like a painting is Barry Lyndon, which was Kubricks goal.
Indeed. The BBC production Schalcken the Painter is another beautifully shot piece with scenes reminiscent of paintings. BFI have put out an excellent Blu-ray of it.

He only directed 1 credited film. What set are you referring to?

It's a real treat, I'd really recommend it. I'm looking forward to Arrow's release of Borowczyk's Blanche since I understand it was a big influence on Schalcken director Leslie Megahey's approach (indeed, he's even done an introduction for the Blanche release).

Well, these are some pretty popular ones (with some recommendations of mine); I listed directors for films that are a good introduction to their work:

8 1/2
12 Angry Men
The 400 Blows
Anatomy of a Murder
Belle de jour
Blow Out
Charade
Days of Heaven (Malick)
Dazed and Confused
Diabolique
The Game
Godzilla
M
The Night of the Hunter
On the Waterfront
Paris, Texas
Repulsion (Polanski)
Revanche
Rififi
Rosemary's Baby (Polanski)
Rushmore (Anderson)
Seconds
Seven Samurai (Kurosawa)
The Seventh Seal (Bergman)
Thief
The Thin Red Line (Malick)
Three Colors Trilogy
Videodrome (Cronenberg)

It was too hard to list only the very very popular ones.
Obviously I left out many other great films but these are some good ones to look at and start with. If anyone else wants to add feel free.

Army of Shadows is still my favorite war film of all time.

Nope. In fact, I had never heard of that film until your post. It looks interesting on the Internet Movie Database site.

without question, it is my favorite, too. (and my wife's also!)

the short film on the BD (not directed by Melville,) however... I thought I'd like it more.
