What are the odds The Brood will finally be announced tomorrow? Feels like I've been waiting forever for this announcement.

A pretty good chance.

It's been confirmed to be coming out through MovieFanFare's blog and it was also hinted at coming out for an October 24 release date through an insider.

Don't Look Now is a really great horror movie with a very unique atmosphere and I will gladly pay full price for it if Criterion gets it. None of the releases of it have ever been particularly good, which is a shame cause it looks like it was originally quite a beautiful movie visually. Well, besides the excessive Donald Sutherland butt.

Just watched the first Zatoichi film and really really liked it! I'd been on the fence on blind-buying it during the sale and just tried The Tale of Zatoichi on Hulu+. Might not be able to afford it this sale but I'm confident this is a great series to get into!

I'd watch My Man Godfrey if the "wacky rich family" weren't a bunch of loopy raving psychopaths.

(I'll settle for the hinted It Happened One Night as representative Depression-era feel-good propaganda. Even if that didn't have Eugene Pallette in it to make it palatable.)

Anyone think Carnival of Souls might get an upgrade or if we will get Mulholland Drive ? I hope for a more heavy horror themed October schedule

Ah the insanity is what I love about My Man Godfrey! Everything about that movie is nuts. The transformation of The Dump as the bums' home to
[Show spoiler]a nightclub
is the best.

On that note, here's my most wanted DVD upgrade list, limited to ones I've seen, else it could be different.

1. Cries and Whispers
2. L'Avventura
3+. BRD Trilogy
4. Bad Timing
5. Cria Cuervos, Spirit Of The Beehive (tie)

And a few LDs just for grins

6. Olympia I & II
7. Darling
8. Crash
9. Carnal Knowledge
10. Damage

And come on with the Truffauts already...

Watership Down has popped up on iTunes with a release date of August 5th... Maybe that will be announced today too? It's definitely a horror.

Just watched 2 Criterions in one night (borrowed from the library):

All that Heaven Allows & Hearts and Minds.

Obviously a strange double feature to say the least.

I really liked All that Heaven Allows and I found it to be a beautiful and touching story and as 1950s as it gets.

Hearts and Minds was brutal and powerful though. I didn't sense it was a propaganda film however. I was stunned and dazed at some of the comments in there by people who were obviously misguided and misunderstood. Seeing that this film is 40 years old, it was amazing this was made in the final last 2 years of the Vietnam war. Already Vietnam veterans were disillusioned and I could not even imagine just how much more disillusioned these veterans are now, 40 years later. This is not a film I wish to own and I'm glad I did not blind-buy this as important as this release is. I could not see myself revisiting this film often because of just how honest the disasters of the war were portrayed. Seeing this documentary film once is enough for me and its something one could never forget. The biggest surprise of all was in the very last few seconds when BBS was displayed. Immediately I remembered my America Lost and Found: The BBS Story box set and that Hearts and Minds was one of the documentary films produced under that studio at the time (and possibly one of the last films from BBS too).

My two favorite movies that display this are Taxi Driver and Vivre sa Vie. Not sure if this is confusing how I put it so I tried to describe a bit more in spoiler using context. From what I read it seems like Lars von Trier films may fit this category but I have never seen any. Thanks all
[Show spoiler] In Taxi Driver we see Travis slowly succumb to both external and internal pressures and he slowly falls into despair. And then in Vivre sa Vie we see a woman who is completely apathetic and thinks she is so much more than she is and we see her realization of the world that surrounds her and how she deals with it leading to her downfall
Pickpocket, which is a favourite film of Paul Schrader's and was the pre-eminent influence on his "man and his room" trilogy (Taxi Driver, American Gigolo and Light Sleeper)

Also recently saw Purple Noon (1960) on the Criterion label - this is based on the excellent Patricia Highsmith novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. If I had never read the book I may have liked the film since I like European movies; great Italian scenery & interesting storyline. It started out being very light hearted, and then got very dark about midway through
[Show spoiler]after Ripley killed Dickie (or Philippe in the film) Greenleaf on the boat.
However, they changed so many things from the book that IMHO the film was a mess; adding characters, changing storylines, etc. The most unforgivable & egregious change
[Show spoiler]was that at the very end of the movie, the authorities found Dickie's body, which had been trailing behind the boat ("Marge"), & then apprehended Ripley at the end. Conversely, at the end of the novel Ripley got away with this, and there were 4-5 more novels starring the character.

I had been avoiding watching the film because I wasn't thrilled with the 1999 The Talented Mr. Ripley film (directed by A. Minghella), since it also changed so many key points from the book. However, Purple Noon was
[Show spoiler]an even worse offender when it came to seriously deviating from the source material....
Do you also hate Throne of Blood because it isn't a three-plus-hour epic chronicling the complete text with all the subplots? It's an adaptation, which means they should change things to make it work. If you want the story as-is just read the book.

I am fairly sure Carnival of Souls has been restored, and it has been on my wishlist for a long time. I am also hoping Freaks and Onibaba will be announced.

I just reserved these four titles at the Barnes & Noble down the street...

Scanners
Pickpocket
Something Wild
Robinson Crusoe on Mars

I may or may not leave the store with other titles once I get there. We'll see...
