Anybody in here seen Linklater's "Boyhood" yet? I've been hearing phenomenal things, so I'm going to catch it at one of the two theaters in town playing it tonight. Strangely, they are only scheduled to play it tonight, no weekend showings, and only one once tonight, at that.

Dazed and Confused is one of my favorite films of all time, so I'm sure Linklater won't disappoint.

I won't be able to see it until August 1st, and even then I have to drive two hours to catch that showing. Thankfully, that showing is at a movie palace, so if the movie is as special as people are saying, It'll be an experience for the ages.

I can't wait.

I just used the new 20% off coupon to buy the David Lean Directs Noël Coward Blu-ray set for $38 and change.

Whenever I buy a David Lean title, I feel as though I'm adding IQ points to my Blu-ray collection. I'm astounded at how his films manage to be intensely cerebral and wondrously entertaining at the same time. The effect is not far removed from the Powell/Pressburger movies that I have seen.

I liked George Washington, and its Malick inspired filmmaking, and the tragic turn the story takes. Way overdue for a rewatch.

The best David Gordon Green films tho are Snow Angels and Pineapple Express.

Recently watched Joe, and it was decent. Effective performances from Nicolas Cage, Mud's Tye Sheridan, and from the non-professional actors as well. The film is a little too dour, and you kind of put the pieces together pretty quickly. Still, DGG remains a skilled, thoughtful filmmaker, and I'll keep watching him.

That's a great set and while it's obviously silly to argue over whether peanut butter or jelly contribute more to the sandwich I'll just say IQ points and Noel Coward seem to be a pretty obvious match.

I guess that is how I would put it.

On a side note, once again, I am somewhat against the grain here in liking DGG. I'm beginning to feel like the Armond White of bluray.com.
I'm also a huge DGG fan, but primarily his earlier, independent films - i.e. George Washington, All The Real Girls, Undertow, and Snow Angels. Though, Undertow is the only one of his I've seen in the theater.

I definitely see the comparison to Terence Malick's films, since DGG's movies are also very naturalistic, and will have scenes focusing on nature/animals, seemingly unscripted conversations, voice-overs, etc.

All the Real Girls was an excellent film, and Zooey D. was great in this. Very poignant. This definitely deserves a Criterion Blu release, especially since the regular DVD has been OOP for quite some time.

Snow Angels was interesting; it had two actors who had been in big-budget flicks prior to this (Sam Rockwell & Kate B.), but it definitely had the tone/vibe of a small-town, American independent film.
[Show spoiler]Starting the film at the end & then working backward is not something I always like in movies, but I think it worked well here.
As it stood, this was a very heart-wrenching, depressing film - and, the stark winter setting really set the tone/vibe from the beginning...

DGG's later comedies (Pineapple Express, The Sitter) are alright, but not as impressive to me since they're obviously big budget by-the-numbers Hollywood flicks. Though, The Sitter is an interesting "re-make" of the classic '80's comedy, Adventures in Babysitting.

I like him a lot as well. Snow Angels would fit lovely in the Criterion Collection seeing as they like to select quite a few polarizing films (which the ending manages to be by a tee). Heck, I wouldn't mind second tier Green like Undertow either.

It's a masterpiece. I saw it a month ago and I'm counting down the days until I can see it again.

Really annoyed with Criterion.

I have been buying replacement cases form hem $5 a piece.

But went to buy Nigh to Hunter which website advertises as $5 for ARTWORK AND CASE and they want me to pay $5 per item so $10!

No where eons its does it say, *$5 per item to international buyers.

Really annoyed, I understand its a loss for them but why advertise it! Oh yet they sold me FULL shoah replacement case $5 (case, inner case and booklet) and no questions asked?? :/

I would kill for a blu release of Snow Angels, but it's Warners, so unlikely to get the Criterion treatment.

There was talk for quite some time that David Gordon Green was going to film an adaptation of A Confederacy of Dunces with Will Ferrell as the main character. Mos Def was going to be in it, too. Well, all that fell apart. Perhaps for the better being how DGG fared with his comedy films. That is BY FAR, my favorite novel of all-time!

To my discredit, Snow Angels is the only David Gordon Green title that I have seen. I rented the movie a few years back, because I am a fan of Stewart O'Nan's novels.

If you think that Snow Angels is a bummer, by the way, then you should read Stewart O'Nan's books, A Prayer for the Dying and Song for the Missing. I would give just about anything to see a faithful film adaptation of A Prayer for the Dying.

Liv Ullmann gets more praise as an actress (technically she is, IMO, a better actress), but in this particular film, Bibi Andersson is phenomenal. She'd helped by being the only one speaking for 95% of the film but the way she ravages the screen with Bergman's words is otherworldly.

I loved the interview on the disc where Bergman talks about 'experiencing' something moreso than trying to 'understand' and over-analyze it. This type of film has been studied for years, but I agree with Bergman, it's okay to interpret a piece of art in certain ways but to search for an absolute is futile.

If you haven't already watched it, you should definitely check out Liv & Ingmar. It is a great film, and I found it very moving at times. Their relationship was fascinating. It might end up being one of my favorite Criterion supplements.

My favorite color films from the collection:

The Red Shoes
Blow Out
Videodrome
Days of Heaven
Broadcast News

I keep seeing Paris, Texas on lists for top color films. Should that be among my next B&N purchases? I have the budget for 3 more buys but this would be a blind buy for me. I have seen Wings of Desire, but it didn't really stick with me like I thought it would. I remember liking it okay.

I haven't seen the ones I crossed out but that's a pretty good list.

I'm not even going to bother looking through mine now.

Oh, Charade maybe.

It's a great disc. It's gorgeous and if you like your movies leisurely paced (I once saw it described as 'painterly' in a program guide description and thought that was the perfect word) then it's hard to go wrong.

That said, I have to admit that I am one of the very few who felt it didn't really pay off in the end. It was a fantastic ride though and most people think it did pay off and in a very moving way.
