I've forgotten-what time does it start EDT? Is it 12 or 6am? Thanks.

I think they usually start them at 12 noon EDT and end the following day at the same time. I'd also say they are usually on a Tuesday. Perhaps they will time it for the 23rd when Macbeth and The Innocents are released.

Sad also that as good as they are in Black Orpheus neither one of them did many films after it and certainly nothing they did approached the critical or popular success of it. Marpessa Dawn does have another film in the CC-Sweet Movie. It's a small (but revealing ) role.

I've had both Sweet Movie and I Am Curious under my radar for some time now. Maybe someday soon

I was wrong on both my guesses! That's better for me since I'm six hours behind EDT. Just have to start practicing getting up and being fully awake by 6am.

For me it is the perfect hour here is at 9am, so i am ready to quickly order just before going to work.

Just keep in mind that on previous sales the website has become very slow the first hours and sometimes gives error messages.

I watched Sweet Movie on Hulu Plus. I actually saw I Am Curious, Yellow in the theater. My best friend and I were just out of High School and the whole "X" rating and full frontal nudity buzz were too much to resist and it was a real zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz fest. Once the clothes came off for the first time and we noticed the plot We Were Curious, Bored. I've since seen it on TCM and, of course, it's really tame by today's standards of what's allowed but I still found it boring.

2012 it was on Sept 24th (Monday) and 2011 on Sept 8th (Thursday) , so my Tuesday guess is wrong.

I think the last few times I took part it was probably three hours or so into it and the very popular titles were either gone or close to it. I remember just barely getting On the Waterfront and it was sold out a minute or two later! Whew!

This past February's Flash was perfectly timed for the 25th the day Tess, Fantastic Mr. Fox and Forgeign Correspondent were released. I placed my order a little after 9am (LA time) so I was able to get them without any problem. It is all about timing on these sales.

Wow, December releases are announced Monday. Feels like just yesterday we were complaining about Tootsie!

My guesses:
Midnight Cowboy
A Matter of Life and Death
WCF Set Two (inc. Revenge & Law of the Border)
Blue is the Warmest Color
Z
Time Bandits

I just finished Ang Lee's Ride with the Devil.

Beautiful cinematography, a solid story, but terrible casting. Tobey Maguire...

How is Sweet Movie? I have the Czech New Wave Eclipse set that I have also been meaning to dig into. Daisies seems like it could be cool.

Regarding I Am Curious, it seems like a film that was more shocking in the past where nudity and what not were just emerging into the motion pictures. I can definitely see how one would view it as boring. I've yet to see something in a film that shocks me, so I'm not expecting it with this one lol.

My guesses are:

Andrei Rublev
The Apu Trilogy
Bicycle Thieves
A Charlie Chaplin Film (The Kid / Limelight)
Midnight Cowboy
Red Sun

Bicycle Thieves should definitely be coming soon - I believe at the Wexner chat last year it was mentioned in the same process/stage of restoration as the War Trilogy and that's about to go to theaters.

I too wouldn't mind Time Bandits, Midnight Cowboy, A Matter of Life and Death, and I've been hoping they'd get Dead Presidents again. Do they have any remaining Hitchcock, Kurosawa, or Chaplin to release or is it pick and choose now?
I'd buy their Hitchcock releases if they'd have a boxset, Blu-ray disc only. Would be more cost effective. This bites I keep missing the sales too.
It was different back in the laserdisc days. Criterion released many Hollywood mainstream titles and nobody had any complaints. Back then it was usually the only way to get these films widescreen. Columbia/TriStar never released Tootsie widescreen, it was a Pan/Scan LD. Criterion released Ghostbusters on Laserdiscs!

That said, I have no complaints about Tootsie. It is a contemporary classic.

That would certainly be a month (you've been right with some of the recent guesses, so hopefully you are right with these as well )

I don't see Satyricon coming, as we have La Dolce Vita coming a month or two before. The others do seem possible, though.

I think it's less likely that Criterion "has gone more pretentious" than that its audience has.

In the past, a number of us have maintained that Criterion would be better putting its resources towards films that are not ones that the major studios would touch with a ten-foot pole. I mean, why should Criterion release a mainstream title that its home studio could just as easily release in a terrific edition themselves?

Of course, these days it's looking like "ones that the major studios wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole" now include their own back catalog titles.

Satyricon was a clue recently. There were 2 Wes Anderson films relatively close this year, so maybe? I'm almost thinking Elevator to the Gallows may be soon. Another alternate could be Sullivan's Travels.
