It was repellent; yet fascinating, at the same time. I was just glad it didn't play out like I thought it would.
Is this your first Almodovar film?

It does, thankfully.

Kes is rather difficult to understand at times. It doesn't necessarily have to do with the accents as much as the slang.

Agree about Kes - superb coming-of-age film, and at times I found this unintentionally funny -
[Show spoiler]one of my favorite scenes had nothing to do with the Kes character himself, but with his older brother & mother: The mother had gone on a date with a guy & they went to the local pub/restaurant...the older brother (her son) just happened to be there with his raucous, obnoxious buddies (I guess it was a small town). The son didn't think much of his mother's "date", so he started insulting the guy from across the room, calling him "cheap", etc. The date, obviously not wanting to get too upset with the son in front of the mother, mostly kept quiet & tried to ignore the guy, but it was obviously making him uncomfortable - very awkward & funny....

Though I typically have no problem understanding people in UK films, I did find the dialogue in Kes hard to understand at times....

My Life as a Dog was also extremely well-done; sad/poignant & at the same time very funny, especially the scene
[Show spoiler]when the kid fell through the skylight after trying to catch a glimpse of the blonde modelling

Would really like to see Criterion release The Tenant; extremely underrated Polanski film, which was both quite creepy & IMHO very funny at times. As far as I know, this has never gotten an Anamorphic Widescreen release....

My first Almodovar film I watched was All About My Mother, and I have been hook on his films since. I highly recommend his drama Talk to Her, in my opinion his best film so far. If criterion releases this film, I will be the happiest film/blu-ray aficionado.

Also the film The Skin I Live In, it is Hitchcock's Vertigo in a twisted sci-fi way. It is a great, crazy film.

Very true.

I do not need subtitles for any of Powell and Pressburger films, but films like Withnail and I, they are a necessity.

Yeah, I am perfectly fine with the old British films, like Hitchcock, but 1960s and up almost requires subtitles for me.

Time Bandits, really? That's a great movie, not that CC is too snobby for something like this, but what the heck are they doing with it? Isn't the movie already out on BD?

edit: Never mind, I was thinking of Ice Pirates.

I'm watching it now and I think it is absolutely terrible.

Dang, thought I may have found something new to watch. The story sounds okay, what's wrong with the actual movie? Acting maybe, just boring?

Dated, silly, and boring. It doesn't help that I dislike Terry Gilliam, though.

There was a real good write-up of The Skin I Live In in Video Watchdog almost 2 years ago and I was intrigued but forgot about it. I'll have to see it.

Looking back at that issue now, a large portion of the magazine was devoted to Daliah Lavi so that could have been part of the reason I was distracted.

Sorry if this has already been pointed out, but Kes is actually set in Barnsley (northern England - I believe it was filmed in other parts of Yorkshire too). I think if it had been set in London some of you folks might be less inclined to view it as 'foreign language'.

Do you think Criterion would upgrade The Killers sometime?
Arrow has a flash sale and I was about to buy it, but I'm really interested in the isolated score+effects track that the Criterion DVD has and thought that it may include it in a future Bluray upgrade.

It seems to be a frequently talked about film, so I'm sure it will eventually be upgraded due to fan base alone.
