When I woke up, I thought it was the 15th too. Then again, I also thought it was Wednesday. And I didn't even drink last night!

UGH My AK 100 Boxset is peeling - I don't touch it incase I damage it, but at the seems on corners it all lifting up - anyone know best way to stick them down without damaging any further? Ive tried dapping spray mount (all I had atm) and it hold but then peels after a few hours :/

Gonna be fiddly putting double sided tape under and I don't want to use glue if it seeps through the material :S

Scream Factory will be releasing Frogs (1972) next year. I've been hoping for a long time that this film would be released on Blu-ray, so this puts a smile on my face.

HAHA! Thankfully, that won't be the case. Otherwise, I'd be really annoyed that I ordered both Breathless and Repulsion this morning.

On the positive side, I was allowed to see a lot of films that I would typically not be able to watch elsewhere. On the negative side, however, it cost me a lot of money (despite me purchasing them all at a discount) and I realized that not many of them have high replay value for me. In fact, I think some of them genuinely suck.

I stopped blind buying for the most part this past May and I do not regret it. I now find many alternatives to seeing the films ahead of time now, whether it be Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Instant Video, or another source. I typically only blind buy if the film sounds compelling and / or I do not have any other options to seeing the film. I did not even bother to pre-order the upcoming Les Blank set as I am not a big fan of documentaries nor do I have any desire for seeing it once, let alone twice.
I know there are "completists" out there as well as collectors who buy things just to have them and maintain a library, even if they're never watched, but I wouldn't buy everything of anything even if I could afford it and had the room for it. And in fact, unless it's under $10, I don't buy any Blu-ray unless I think it has replay value. If it doesn't, I'd rather stream it.

I have a friend who has about 8000 LPs and CDs and while I'm sometimes envious of his collection, I know that I wouldn't listen to 97% of it even if I did own it.

I've (almost) always taken the view that having something on the shelf that's never read, listened to or watched is no different than it being in the trash (the only advantage to keeping it is that it doesn't occupy landfill).

Why don't you sell the ones you don't want to view again? Some won't sell (I've had "Trilogy of Life" on half.com for a long time, with no takers), but many will. I'd be interested if you want to PM me a list with prices. And if you don't want to bother selling them, donate them to your local library. I'm sure they'd love to have anything in the Criterion collection.

I wonder if they have the rights to this Rosy Grier/Ray Milland classic released the same year"

I don't know how one would know that. I'm not the same person I was 5 years ago, and won't be the same person in 5 more years. Throughout my library I have books, albums, and movies that didn't speak to me earlier but do now. I'm sure I have stuff now that I'm indifferent about (or even dont like!) that I will appreciate/love in the future.

when it comes to material possessions that have potential resale value, a line spoken by Jimmy Stewart's Scottie Ferguson in Vertigo always plays in my head: "you shouldn't have been so sentimental." (if you're not familiar with the line, just say it in your head giving your best Jimmy Stewart impersonation.)

but I generally agree w/ Zoet here... if the chances are that you won't revisit the film, there is no point in hanging onto it - even if it might have "sentimental" value and especially if it's just part of a "collection."

that's why I'm unloading my copy of Le Cercle Rouge. I like the movie. I don't love it. I've seen it 2 times in recent years and while I will probably see it again at some point in the future, the money in my pocket is worth more to me. decisions like this keep me from spending a fortune on a home video collection.

of course, that is why we are all here - lovers of film and collectors, but the day may come (as it did w/ many DVDs I bought and nearly my entire baseball card collection,) when those material possessions don't mean s**t to you any more. strike while the iron is hot.

Since about May this year, I have removed 101 Criterion films from my collection and I have cancelled 12 pre-orders. I'm getting there. .

With my music collection, which consists of almost 1,000 CDs, I've always had a general rule that CD that I do not at least have the urge to revisit once a year is dead weight. I do not actually revisit every disc once a year, of course, but the mere fact that I'm still excited to have it on my shelf for listening at some point is good enough.

With movies, I'm hard-pressed to think of anything in my current collection that I do not want to keep. Everything that I own, from the prestigious Criterion and Kino titles down to the B-movies from Scorpion Releasing, have a place in my heart.

I need to be more judicious about my blind buys in the future, because of free space where I live, but I cannot think of anything in my movie collection that I will not at least have an urge to revisit at some point later on.

You did the right thing.
Sadly I think, I may be wrong, that many people buy Criterion just because it's Criterion.
It's that I can't believe that some people are interested in every single release Criterion does, every single month..

From any given monthly announcement, I'm usually interested in buying two or three titles. Ever so often, there's an epic month when I'm interested in every release, but that does not happen often.

I am, however, admittedly intrigued by titles that appear in the Criterion Collection to the point that I want to investigate the reviews and such to see if they are movies that might float my boat. The "C" on the cover art does not guarantee a purchase from me, but it does merit a closer look.

Some people just like to collect them all - I buy A LOT but I won't buy them all or buy them for the sake of it, there are many films in collection I am avoiding and have no interest in.

Saying that I do enjoy blind buying to try discover something new and appreciate other peoples work - I am very passionate about cinema, and even bad films have something good about them

If people want to buy Criterion film because of the name, then fine, it doesn't affect you in any way and its their money to spend - we will buy/collect things for different reasons ^^
