Going away for weekend - got my sister looking after dog and flat... just hope she focuses attention on my Criterions and keeps them safe...

>.<

She's a big film buff but hasn't seen any Criterions or anything so going to make her watch as many as she can - as long as NOTHING gets destroyed, and she's not touching my out of prints haha!

Surely she's going to smudge your digipacks with greasy fingers.

This is what Polaroid is going to see upon arrival back home. Replace the title with one of your choosing, e.g. The Third Man.

Actually - she needs to see the Criterion presentation! I made her watch it, but she watched on her iPod touch at a train station.... I mean come on! Lynch would be furious! I was horrified!

I watched a Terry Gilliam film last night: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. It was my 2nd time seeing it. I hadn't thought much of it when I initially saw this in a movie theater but seeing it again on blu-ray was amazing. The story wasn't as difficult to follow somehow for me this time around. The visuals are just mind-blowing though and Gilliam's imagination is out of this world. It's ingenious how Gilliam and his co-writer re-wrote the fantasy scenes where Heath Ledger was supposed to be in and brought in Depp, Law and Farrell to play Ledger's part. I could see so many influences from Gilliam's past films here including The Fisher King, 12 Monkeys, Time Bandits, Brazil, Munchausen and the Monthy Python movies. I really wish this movie was available in the Criterion Collection because this is such a fantastic movie. I still haven't seen his new film Zero Theorem yet but I do want to.

My current #1 Criterion want - Madadayo on blu, with an english translation of A Dream Is A Genius (like Red River or Hanging Rock) included in the package.

Make it happen Criterion!

I hated it - just didn't work for me and the acting was so bad, so bad that it really distracted from the story, which could have been great - but meh was a huge disapointment. I am in no rush to see Zero Theorem. Terry Gilliam does have some good films, but they date so quickly.

I did appreciate the actors jumping in last minute to ave the film and show support for what happened - but for me it didn't work. its similar to Palindromes where the lead is the same character but played but multiple actors.

Would hate if it was added to collection, would be such a waste of resources lol (in my opinion).

I saw when it came out so a while ago - may give it another try...

Well, there were a variety of reactions and most of them were very reasonable.

Some people (jscoggins in particular) took it upon themselves to calmly and methodically gather useful data. I would say their reaction was not only merited, it was laudable.

The more general community reaction seemed pretty reasonable as well. The closest thing I saw to a draconian response was a handful of people saying they would hold off on future Criterion purchases until this was all straightened out. There was also some (not entirely unreasonable) grumbling about the initial lack of communication but for the most part people were willing to give Criterion the benefit of the doubt and trust that they would respond appropriately.

Which they did.

The only reactions I would take issue with were the decision to sweep a multitude of possible disc issues into one confusing mega-thread and some of the self-styled fire marshalls who took it upon themselves to put out fires that weren't burning.

But other than that the reactions were pretty reasonable.

Seriously man, give it another spin...I almost hated it myself when I first saw it too, but now I have come to appreciate this film. Gilliam is a living legend and though some of his more recent movies are highly flawed and problematic, his imagination and vision is still highly original. His films will probably most likely be appreciated a lot more after he dies, but for now enjoy it while you can.

Theres no doubt he is extremely creative and imaginative and I think that's his strongest part of his films - but there is something missing and it bugs me. I think the biggest let down with Imaginarium was the acting - mainly from the Lily Cole - I get why he used her and her image is incredible but her acting... go back to modelling lol.

Just re watched the trailer and the special effects look sooooo dated lol - I did get the excitement from watching the trailer, like I did originally - I think it is one of those films where the trailer is better than the film >.<

When I get around to watching I will let you know but I am in no rush - his older films are far superior.
