The categories:

I can't narrow down some of these categories to just one release!!

This is probably common knowledge, but here's a way to list the blurays released this year:

The first of the year is Throne of Blood on the second page.

Good catch. I forgot to ask for 3 submissions for a few of the categories. It's been revised.

Watched Watership Down for the first time - really interesting movie, a lot more violent than I expected. Not sure if I need to own, but definitely one I would watch again.

Had a day off yesterday so I decided to catch up on a couple of my many unwatched Criterion releases from the last few sales. It ended up being a nice day of westerns.

First up was 3:10 to Yuma. I saw the remeake a few years ago, and enjoyedit very much, so I was really excited to finally see the original. I must say, as you would expect, the original blew me away. Glenn Ford is such a charismatic actor, that I continued to forget he's supposed to be the bad guy.
[Show spoiler]The scene at the dinner table really shows the amazing ability he has to charm others and make you forget he so casually kills 2 people, one them a member of his gang.
And I don't leave out Van Helfin's perfomanace. The struggle he shows as a father trying to protect and provide for his family, while trying to do the right thing, tugs at the moral center of a person.
[Show spoiler]As he is promised cast amounts of money to let Ben go, you can see the struggle he faces, knowing that he is a good man, but he wants to keep his family safe.
Overall an amazing movie I can't say enough about.

My Darling Clementine was the second faeture of the day. True to form, the movie was beautiful. John Ford's films continue to amaze me every time I see them. Monument Valley looks no better than in a John Ford film. The transfer of the film, simply stunning. And once again the leading men in this movie are second to none. I know we have great actors now, but there's just soemthing about the likes of Henry Fonda and Victor Mature. The charisma both men have on screen suck you in to their characters, and have you feeling every emotion the are enduring.
[Show spoiler]From the death of James, to Doc Holliday, ending with Wyatt riding off into the sunset, you ache, mourn, and yearn right along side each character.
The film is a masterpiece.

Both films are amazing and should be a part of any western fan's collection. My only regret is that I am just now getting to these great films.

Oh, OUCH!

That movie has traumatized more children than anything that the crazy people rant against on a daily basis.

Voted, though I'm not sure I interpreted the categories the way others will. For upgrade and new spine I based it on the film itself. For Best Release I based it on overall package (film, supplements, packaging).

Maybe next year a Best Supplements category?

Your interpretations are as good as any. I purposely didn't define the categories this year. I agree 100% with your take on best release. I tend to look at that one by overall presentation.

Week away and no review of Tootsie? Anyone know when that'll be coming down? Pro-B perchance?

I was a bit disappointed with Men, Women and Children -- I expected to like it much more based on Reitman's other films. I found it tread quite similar ground with Disconnect, which I adored. Did you see that one?

conceptually neat, but its useful life certainly had to be short. ...and that's because many of these films have seen new transfers. on top of that, there are no special features with any of the discs.

I can't see anyone justifying $8.50 each for these editions... on DVD no less

See I found his other films a bit meh - Juno has a great soundtrack though!

I wanted to love Young Adult, and it was good at times but it did let itself down at times sadly.

I haven't seen Disconnect, is it worth seeing? I have seen the poster around but never look into it tbh.

Isn't the book it comes with meant to be really good? I don't know much about this set tbh, just contains some brilliant cinema! Probs a bit like the AK set I suppose.

I just realised they are in this set, how can they sell if its OOP? Unless they have stock left over? or are there certain rights where they can continue to sell, but only in that set etc?

Ain't no need to buy this set. Even the StudioCanal Blu-ray releases of certain out-of-print films are better than the DVD editions in terms of picture quality.

I got the "Rosemary's Baby" Blu today and the back of the artwork has a big indention from the disc tray. Anyone else have that happen? Looks like they pressed too hard in manufacturing.
