I started the Zatôichi set this afternoon with the first time and I thought it was very enjoyable.

Still, the long hair in one scene and the short hair in the next got a bit silly at times.

Jesus Mary Mother of God... I shouldn't have clicked on that. I'll send you a private message with all of my credit card details. You can have all of the money that you want, as long as you make that link go away. *shudders*

Elsewhere in Criterion news...

I find it interesting that, on their Facebook page, Criterion posted a photo of Kirk Douglas in his outfit from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

I know that the chance of Criterion releasing that Disney film is roughly zero, but I can at least enjoy the thought for a while. Oh yes, I can enjoy the thought.

Two of the films on that set were released in the collection proper some twenty-five odd years ago (and are on Hulu), the third is the best-ever adaptation of Othello on film (and is on Netflix), and I've yet to watch the fourth.

But it's stellar. Utterly devastating that a film as important and revolutionary as Victim has to go unreleased on region A BD because of its inclusion in such a set, however. (I know its not necessarily an either/or thing but I certainly feel we're missing out)

Even if this wasn't a Disney film, I don't think it would be released since it doesn't seem to me like "Criterion material". Is it?

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea would be just as much Criterion material as The Thief of Bagdad (1940) or Robinson Crusoe on Mars.

Such a great cast...
Kirk Douglas, James Mason, Peter Lorre, Paul Lukas, and, last but not least, one of film noir's unsung heroes...Ted de Corisa.

It was Kirk Douglas' birthday yesterday or day before, he's 98 What a legend.

I've never seen it, but with that cast, I'm going to make it my job to see it.

Kirk Douglas was always amazing. It's interesting that my all-time favorite movie, Out of the Past, was only his second acting role, after another superb film noir, The Strange Love of Martha Ivers.

It's too bad that I Walk Alone (1948), starring Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster, and the awesomely beautiful Lizabeth Scott, is not available on Blu-ray or even on DVD. That would be an interesting one for Criterion to stumble across.

My wife and I watched a documentary tonight and one of the people being interviewed had a copy of the Essential Arthouse book/50 disc box set behind him as he was talking.

My wife found this much less interesting than I did.

I'll keep an eye out for that one, Lizabeth Scott is indeed delicious. Holy cow, she is still alive as well! 92

Anyway, Criterion could do worse than getting their hands on The Bad and the Beautiful (probably seems ripe for TT to grab) or Lonely are the Brave

Lizabeth Scott had the sexiest voice in cinema. (Except, perhaps, for Rita Hayworth)

I'd love for Criterion to release Lonely Are the Brave. That's such an underrated gem of the western genre.

I think Lizabeth sounds sexiest in Dead Reckoning.

I'm changing the subject here a bit, but any word on Before the Rain (1994) on Criterion Blu? It's one of my favorite criterion releases. The Criterion DVD came out in 2008 and I have it but it would be soooo sweet if Criterion can release it in high def. This movie would really benefit from the higher resolution due to the many scenes of nature. Please Criterion...

Argh, you all are killing me. So if I go region free and limit my purchases to silents....

I got the French, all-region Borzage trilogy with Charles Farrell and Janet Gaynor, and it was frustrating enough not to be able to watch the supplements. But then I discovered that The River wasn't treated as a film on the Lucky Star release but as a supplement. Grrrr....... And Passion of Joan of Arc on blu is mightily tempting.

This is one of my secret favorite Criterion releases. If this film gets a blu-ray upgrade, I'd be ecstatic. I'll never forget the rousing, powerful soundtrack in this film.

I'm glad that you like it. Yes, Before the Rain deserves more recognition than it has gotten. Whoever discovers it and watches it, will be treated to just a fantastic, sublime movie about the stupidity of war and the never ending tensions between religions. There are even other themes that it dwells on, but its up to the viewer to see. The soundtrack is phenomenal. I would rank it as one of the best soundtracks in a movie ever. So, Criterion if your reading, please release this amazing film on Blu-ray!

My guess is Warner Archive. We know they rarely license out titles.
