The Brood

Inside Llewyn Davis
A Master Builder
Moonrise Kingdom
The New World
One-Eyed Jacks
Speedy
The Merchant of Four Seasons is a helluva a lot more of a sure thing than One-Eyed Jacks.

I really hope it's the Before movies, but I personally don't think it is at all. To me, it couldn't be any more obvious of a clue for Two Days, One Night.

The woman in the New Years drawing looks to be Gena Rowlands in Gloria.

Nice work. I also keep track of all the movies I watch but I only viewed 91 in 2014. I'll try to watch more this year.

I've been twisting, turning, folding, spindling and mutilating that image trying to convince myself there's some way it could be Gilda - so far no luck but I'm not done - but I would buy this blind in a heartbeat.

2014 was the first year I kept track of most things I watched (feature-length films and short films, though not one-reel films). I got to 290 films over the course of 2014, which is kinda cool. I'm planning on watching fewer films this year because I'd like to read more books this year.

I do, too, but it's most likely Two Days, One Night because of the IFC deal. I'm anxious to see the film here in a few weeks when it opens.

Super excited for The Palm Beach Story, I hope the trend of releasing classic American comedies continues.

It'll be nice to see 'The Fisher King' get the Criterion treatment. I'll happily welcome any Gilliam they want to release.

One-Eyed Jacks is NOT definitive. It's a stretch. The King and I fits much better.

Here's an off-the-wall thought: could the [blank] next to the armed woman be a sinkhole?

Sinkhole (2004)

It did win Best Feature at the 2004 Indie Memphis Film Festival, after all

And while I'm making silly stretches, the masks worn by the gang of four look a lot like the masks protesters wear to symbolize being voiceless.

The Tribe (2014)

This one actually sounds pretty interesting. I could see them taking a flier on something like this.

I completely disagree.
I think One-Eyed Jacks is pretty obvious and explicit while The King and I is waaay a stretch.

You'll have to explain that since the picture literally shows a King holding up an eye.

A single eye, not multiple 'jacks' or anything to suggest it actually is meant to be a 'jack.'

Well, I'd say that's going to make more people wish for the release.

What makes it so impossible? Criterion have licensed plenty of films from 20th Century Fox, many very recently.

It wouldn't be the first musical they've released or the most mainstream. I am pretty sure people would be more baffled by Tootsie's release than The King and I.

It's certainly a significant film.

It's not impossible but there is one strike against a CC release: it's already out. Fox released it both solo and as part of the Rodgers and Hammerstein set. And while the reviews aren't exactly glowing I'm not sure Criterion could do a lot better. Fox treats their eye-candy titles (including other musicals in the R&H set) pretty well so I'm guessing the problems with their release are source-related.

But still, you never know...

That aside, I agree that One-Eyed Jacks is far from a lock. It's a reasonable interpretation of the drawing but definitive seems a little strong at this point.

According to wikipedia, "jacks" is a kind of fish:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack

So, an one eyed fish ---> one eyed jacks.

To depict the "I" in King and I with an "eye", it seems to me a big stretch.

It just looks an odd fit for the catalog, although I appreciate they have released quite a few headscratchers. But the very recent release of King and I by Fox would make this CC inclusion even more strange.

Are you kidding? They love puns/homophones.

The knight - A Night to Remember...the two twigs of rosemary - Rosemary's Baby...and who can forget the bad lambs?
