Apparently they are working on getting the rights to all three, great news, but still nothing concrete in the sense that they might not get them, but if they were able to release La Dolce Vita i hope this can be done too, although it is a bit more complicated since it involves more films.

However, I seem to be watching the films at the right time and at the right pace for me. I really enjoyed immersing myself in Clouzot's The Wages of Fear and then Diabolique recently, and I'm just not quite ready to let them go and focus on anything else right now. I watched the films and all the supplements, and then I researched them and the director online and read through all the books that referenced them in my personal library.

Now I'm debating between making a shift from Clouzot to Hitchcock (you've sparked my interest in seeing The 39 Steps and maybe revisiting The Lady Vanishes along with Foreign Correspondent), or doing a 180 degree turn and riding the Old West along with John Wayne in (Stagecoach and Red River). Who knows? I also recently won a copy of Bergman's The Magician on blu-ray at eBay, so I may be off doing the Bergman thing if it arrives any time soon.

That's the great thing about having a personal film library, isn't it, that we have the incredible luxury of seeing the films we want to see, when we want to see them? It's hard to believe that 70 years ago, people either saw a film when it played for two or three nights at a cinema near them ... or risked never seeing it at all, barring a possible reissue. It makes me grateful to be living now, in what I think will end up being considered the Golden Age of Home Theatre!
Seems like we both have the same problems watching our unwatched right now... just so much to watch but want to make sure we are in the right mood so we get the most out of them all. I know the feeling of wanting to start 2 completely different genres, or switch in between. I've had the exact same 180 degree turn to Westerns lately.

This morning waiting on the cable guy, so I popped in F for Fake while I wait. Figured it'd be a fun movie, and not too long, to watch while I wait.

And yes, a personal film library is really the best. I have so many people ask why I have so many movies, and you hit it on the head. I never know what I want to watch, and so I have a choice of over 1,000 possibilities... it's truly a great time. So mcuh so, I'm debating on working from home today so I can catch up on some films (yeah right, ha!).

I had no interest in Bette Midler then because she wasn't a member of Kiss, AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Foreigner, or the Talking Heads, nor was she with Ted Nugent or Alice Cooper. Anyone not falling into those or similar groups got tuned out. It also didn't help that the title song was on the radio every time I turned it on, to the point I got thoroughly sick of it. Still haven't seen the movie, but now I would welcome the opportunity.
I saw The Rose way back when. I thought it was a good movie and that Bette Midler was excellent in it.

Just watched Letter Never Sent and all I can say is WOW! The scene with Tanya yelling for Andrei during the lightning will haunt me for years. Also when Tanya & Sabinine are reciting The Pioneer's Oath of the Soviet Union...Good Lord my fellow forum homies what an emotional roller coaster.

Plus how did they shoot those fire sequences back in '59? Would have loved a bonus feature on that lol makes me super excited for a Cranes are Flying upgrade.

Does anyone know any history on this movie? It was a complete blind buy as in I had never even heard anything about it before I bought it.

Thanks for the quick review on this one... I've picked it up several times but never pulled the trigger on the blind buy. Sounds likes a movie I need to pick up during the next BN sale.

One thing I've noticed in watching a lot of Aki Kaurismäki's films over the last month or so (before these 5 films I recently watched La vie de Bohème and the Proletariat Trilogy of Shadows in Paradise, Ariel and The Match Factory Girl) as well as Le Havre and the 3 films of The Leningrad Cowboys trilogy), is that there are several things you'd expect to see in a Kaurismäki film.

Those things are:

1. Guys getting beaten up
2. Dogs
3. Rock bands (or long directorial takes of orchestras/musicians/singers)
4. People being wrongly accused of something
5. Romance that turns tragic or is unfulfilled
6. Cigarettes
7. Loneliness, homelessness and being unemployed

Did I miss anything here?

Kaurismäki is one of the best things about the Criterion Collection and I'd love to see even more of his films come to it.
Thanks for the detailed review of Aki K's films. Last Fall, I watched The Matchstick Factory girl, & over the holidays I saw Ariel & Shadows in Paradise. All are excellent films, and their low budget aspect just adds to the grittiness & bleakness of the characters' lives. This Proletariat trilogy paints a very grim portrait of life; dead-end jobs, tiny apartments/rooming houses, financial problems....Glad I was finally able to see these, since, IIRC, The Proletariat trilogy has been largely unavailable in the R1 format until relatively recently.

I have also seen Le Havre & La vie de Boheme, and while those are both excellent films, I strongly prefer the Proletariat trilogy. These earlier films are both gritty & raw, something that's somewhat missing from his later movies....

I definitely want to see more of Aki's films, though some of them are hard to get ahold of in the R1 DVD/Blu format...

So many excellent films. The 39 Steps is my favorite Hitchcock film. The Magician is one of the more fun Bergman films, althought not nearly as lighthearted as the delightful Smiles of a Summer Night.

I wonder if this type of filming lends itself to outtakes/deleted scenes? If so, include those with optional commentary.

Does someone want to make a nice feature length documentary on the entire before project? Cause that would fit nicely in this set.

I'm guessing they'd need to create bonus features. I never owned the DVD's but don't remember them having many extras. It's anyone's guess on the deleted scenes.

The only special features the Before Sunrise/Before Sunset DVDs included were the feature films in standard definition, and trailers.

They could wait until 2022 and release it with a new 4th film as a bonus feature.

I'm curious how Before Sunrise will look on blu-ray. I've seen the film on video and projected 35 mm print. The film's colors are darker than 'Sunset', not drab, but darker.
