Ok, this is a popular thread so I figured I'd ask, is anyone else having this issue? When I click on my username at the top right of the site it takes me to my community profile instead of my subscribed threads (I know no other way of getting to them).

Edit: and sometimes it says file not found, just an error page.

Had some good times last night. My wife is funny, she look at movies made before 1990 as old. It's an expression she use a lot. Growing up in Asia she mostly watch anime and the typical Hong Kong action movies. She is also a fan of comic books movies. But with her family and friends she was not expose much to more classic movies. Been careful introducing her to Criterion, I mean certain movies are not easy to take in when you are not use to them. I went with Chaplin so far because I feel like it's an easy introduction to a different type of movies for her. It's pretty difficult to dislike Charlie Chaplin.

So last night we watched The Great Dictator. She really enjoyed it. For older movies so far I've mostly introduced her to Audrey Hepburn, some of Bogart movies, musicals and other light movies from the 40's, 50's and 60's. It was fun watching her reaction to Chaplin and the story. She said it was a strange mix of being funny and sad. She was really taken by the message of the movie.

I am thinking to watch with her next either City Lights or Seven Samurai. She as express some curiosity about Kurosawa because of how I talk about his movies all the time. She as an active side so I am not sure how she would deal with slow pace stories. Would really like to introduce her to Ozu

I've been working on an offshore oil rig (as usual) for the last week (2 weeks to go!) so I've been out of the loop, Internet comes and goes and is pretty sketchy.
But what's this about the Before trilogy?? Has this been confirmed? Awesome news!
By the way, to learn a little about my job, watch Breaking the Waves

Is that where the "slick" part of SlickDamian comes from?

The Before Trilogy hasn't been confirmed, last I checked. It's been suggested that one of the clues in the New Year's cartoon points to it.

In other (sad) news, I saw on the BBC news that La Dolce Vita star Anita Ekberg died earlier today.

The only issue I have with Janus is that they stopped releasing the combo packs, I am trying to own every version of these films and that definetly helped keep the cost down versus buying each version. Great collection of cinema otherwise.

Given the limits of both runtime and the production code I think they did a really good job with the story but yeah, I can see somebody being lukewarm to it. While I can appreciate Joan Crawford she's not really my cup o' tea either. Where somebody like Barbara Stanwyck embraced a more subtle, restrained style (I'm hesitant to say 'modern' but that's kind of what I mean, I guess) people like Joan Crawford and Bette Davis often took a more theatrical, overly emotive approach. That's a perfectly legitimate choice but not always entirely to my liking.

For me though the cinematography alone puts it over the top. Mildred Pierce isn't the first thing I think of when I hear 'noir' but boy, it sure does look like one. The nighttime exteriors and the bar/restaurant interiors, the dressing rooms, Mildred's home...they're all just gorgeous.

It's not anywhere near the top of any of my wishlists but I'll be one of the first ones in line when Warner/Warner Archives gets around to releasing it.

If you want to ease her into Kurosawa I would give some thought to The Hidden Fortress.

That is one fun movie.

Maybe Rhapsody In August? Women seem to appreciate Richard Gere.

I work with international students a lot and did a film class with a group a few months ago. All Gulf Arab. When I do the class, I try to work justifiable stuff in among the rom coms and action movies, and I showed Modern Times to them since they'd at least heard of Charlie Chaplin. Silent and black-and-white was not appealing, but within the first half hour, they were totally hooked. I mean totally to the story, situations, characters and themes. So hooked that when I paused the movie after the department store segment, one of them asked me, in a poignant moment, if both Chaplin and Goddard were actually dead at present. Such is the power of that film to transcend both culture and time. And, for this 20-year-old, a glimpse of what mortality means.

Great story. If watching Chaplin today they are hooked, I'd have to say that is immortality. Such is the gift of film.

I managed to erode my mountain of unwatched movies a bit this weekend. I started off with 'Les Visiteurs du Soir' on Friday, and my feelings about it are still conflicted. It was a beautifully shot film, but I found many of the scenes and dialogue rather redundant. It wasn't
[Show spoiler]until the devil showed up in the last third of the film that the pace improved. After this, the film became very engaging, and the ending, though simple, was rewarding.

I did, however, really like how Marcel Carne used classic painting and photography techniques like the rule of thirds, lead-in lines, and symmetry to compose his shots. The opening scenes of the devil's children riding to the castle are beautiful.

After that I popped in 'Out of the Past', but I won't comment on that, since I assume most of you have seen it. It did leave me wondering one thing, though: Whose chin would win in a fight: Robert Mitchum's or Kirk Douglas's?

Oh, and I also watched 'The Uninvited', and was pleasantly surprised by the amount of humor in it.

I'm a long-time admirer of Michael Cimino, and consider Heaven's Gate to be far superior to The Deer Hunter. I think of Criterion's acquisition of the film as being quite a big coup.

Agree about Safe tho, marvellous film.

A hundred years later and Chaplin's genius is still appreciated. Wonderful!

Definitely a surprise, but not a complete shocker. That being said, winning a Golden Globe certainly doesn't support the argument as to why CC release his films; the Globes are very strange!

For those that like his films, however, I'm sure this was something to cheer about.

This is not to put down any film that won an award last night but each year I put less stock in film awards. I'll be glad when award season is over.

What a nice surprise about Boyhood! I wasn't expecting that to win.

While I hated Grand Budapest, it's pretty cool that both the Best Drama and Comedy/Musical were summer releases, not the standard holiday season Oscarbait time of year.

I still have not seen any of the films mentioned at the Golden Globes.

Boyhood is up for rental at the Redbox down the street, so it's just a matter of when my pulse is quickened enough to pay a visit to the Redbox, as opposed simply to watching one of the discs in my still-unwatched stack.

Either way, I do not place a lot of stock in these award shows anymore.

My personal top five of 2014...

1. Under the Skin (I know that it's technically a 2013 film, but still...)
2. Cold in July
3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
4. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
5. A Most Wanted Man

I don't get out to the theaters as much as I used to, and, when I do, it's usually to see some well-loved classic at a big screen showing (Double Indemnity, Vertigo, etc.). I still haven't seen Boyhood, Wild, Birdman, The Babadook, Nightcrawler, and several other highly-acclaimed movies for the year.
