They are little more expensive on most blu-rays, but the regular price for Criterion discs, $39.95, so BN isn't far off. Amazon is generally cheaper unless you join the BN membership, and stack coupons during the sales.

Honestly, I only recognized the name from road signs on my way to visit some friends who live in Wyandotte and Miami, Oklahoma, and family trips to Beaver Lake when I was a kid. I had to look up the connection to the 'Jesse James' film (my knowledge of film was acquired in an autodidactic manner, so there's large gaps lol.) That's awesome! I might have to make it down for Jesse James Days one of these years!

I think you named the 2 main culprits though. I get 99% off my Criterions online or at B&N.
I second the used shops. Over the past couple months I've purchased 'Walkabout' for $21, 'All That Heaven Allows' for $8 (dual format missing the DVD but had everything else), 'The Red Shoes' for $21, and 'Anatomy of a Murder' for $15 (was missing the booklet) from used shops.

I don't blame you one bit. The majority of mine have come from B&N sales and Christmas/birthday presents from family members I spent wayyy too much during the last sale.

Oh, and my apologies if this has already been mentioned, but TCM's 31 Days of Oscar is on. I'm about to sit down to 'The Thin Man' right now

That doesn't mean that people prefer it to his classic work though. It just means that it's his most popular and well received film in a while. That isn't saying much really. Godard's fanbase is nothing now to compared to what it was in the 60's.

I'm glad that he has had a late career resurgence though.

I don't go anymore at the cinema, but I'm looking forward to go to this!

By the way, I would LOVE a narration free version, but i understand there won't be any!

http://broadgreen.com/films

Theres a 3 page document on it too!

I'll be making the effort to travel out to see IMAX version

You could always mute it when its out and play your own soundtrack over it, or even get the soundtrack for the film and play over it

Its a Malick film that he's been working on for YEARS

Quote:
VOYAGE OF TIME is a celebration of the universe, displaying the whole of time, from its start to its final collapse. This film examines all that occurred to prepare the world that stands before us now: science and spirit, birth and death, the grand cosmos and the minute life systems of our planet. Malick is working first in the IMAX format for a 40-minute version with scientific narration by Brad Pitt, followed by a 35mm feature-length version with narration by Cate Blanchett.

There are a couple of things that quite literally won't work in 2D, such as the much-lauded type of shot that Godard has seemingly invented, but it's still an impressive film regardless.

Unfortunately we have no real way of testing that. His post-60s work was far from "pretty much ignored" though, which was one of the points that you initially made. i've actually just checked and In Praise Of Love made more money at the US box-office in 2001 than Notre Musique did three years later, countering this idea that the latter marked Godard's "big comeback".

It stands to reason that his most famous work is going to be the most popular. The 60s work has been canonised by institutions like Criterion, so it's not surprising that those are the films that are best known. To paraphrase yourself tho, that doesn't mean that those who have seen a wide range of his work prefer it over the later stuff (in my experience it's quite the opposite, with the reputation of the later work putting many off from giving it a try. Those that do give the later work a shot tend to fall heavily for it). Thankfully the later work is getting it's turn in the spotlight now, with a couple of very good books having been published of late (Daniel Morgan's Late Godard is brilliant, while Michael Witt's Cinema Historian stands as one of the major events in Godard publishing) and the later films coming up for revaluation from the likes of Criterion and Cohen on home video.

Anyway, my initial point was that his latest film was well-received by both audiences and critics alike, countering this suggestion that you were in the minority in celebrating a film like Goodbye To Language.

What are you basing this on? Granted I'm approaching my evaluation of his popularity from a privileged, biased standpoint, but I've always seen him as consistently popular, especially here in Europe.

There's also a good case to be made for the idea that Godard was actually more popular in the early 1980s in the US than he was in the 60s, with the Dick Cavett interview on the recent Every Man For Himself disc (it helps that Godard decided to embrace, or at least tolerate, his celebrity around the time of that film's release, in an attempt to make a return to mainstream cinema).

+1.. but Brad Pitt's the deal, obviously
The narration free parts in Tree of Life are so stunning.

There's a great article on it here. https://thedissolve.com/features/201...t-of-the-year/

In short tho -
[Show spoiler]at one point the two lenses of the 3D camera "split apart", so for ten seconds or so separate films are beamed in to each eye.

Yeah, it's amazing, both of my audiences literally gasped, while people started cheering at Cannes. It's genuine spectacle, my mouth nearly hit the floor!

Ah *Exhales*
Another century, another Godard revolution of film. So, what else is new?
In Breathless it was the edititing and camera movement/placement. Now it's 3D.

That shot sounds amazing. I have a suspicion that James Cameron will use it, or Michael Bay for some explosion effects or car wrecks or some **** like that.
