L'argent, along with several other Bresson films, are on Criterion's Hulu channel (they picked up the rights to quite a few former New Yorker Video titles as they became available - such as Weekend) - so I assume it will be released eventually.

Here is a quick way to see what is on Criterion's Hulu Channel (search by director, country, year, etc).

Additionally, there are a few movies that Criterion doesn't have streaming rights for - thus they end up on Amazon / Itunes for purchase, here is a list of a few of those that I've found:

That may be for certain specific cases. I have the region B SCC blu-ray releases for the Melville films (Red Circle, Army of Shadows), Bunuel's Belle de Jour,and Renoir's Grand Illusion among others, and all of them are superlative releases. I prefer the color tones on these releases to Criterion's transfers. And none of these have the problem you mentioned with LYAM (that one, I have the CC release). I do agree with you that their chapbook packaging is sub-standard, especially later releases where the disc hub is just stuck on with poor quality glue and can drop off any time.

same thing for Last Year at Marienbad via Studio Canal... was mildly disappointed with it. and I didn't check, but I think they use the same music for their title menus for both films... that's just weak

Speaking of lackluster picture and packaging in a StudioCanal release, I just picked up 'Ran' because it was on sale for $10. It came in a crappy eco case, and when I opened it, I found the cover art to be damaged and the case to be cracked. When I popped the disc in, I was greeted by a soft picture with quite a bit of sharpening. It looks like someone got a little too happy with the high pass filter in Photoshop. At least there's a visible grain pattern. I'd really like to see Criterion release it with a new remaster/transfer.

I often do that too but unless an MoC title pops up cheap (sub £10) or is a lot earlier than the Criterion (eg., Roma) I will tend to wait for a sale and get the Criterion, but only if the supplements are significantly better. Sometimes I am shallow enough to make the choice because of packaging, which in this case would mean the MoC

Otherwise I prefer to support Eureka! if there's no significant difference.

hmm... ok. I won't write them off just yet. the missing subtitles from LYaM irked me quite a bit, though. I usually don't have much experience seeing foreign releases from different distributors, although I am aware that the translations can vary. that's part of why I'm looking forward to seeing Pierrot Le Fou via the CC release. I'm wondering if the viewing experience will be different.

What is the longest period that Criterion has had a film up on Hulu or iTunes but hadn't released it on disc?

They've been sitting on some hidef masters for what seems like forever (DePalma's SISTERS).

I hope so because all of the Pathfinder DVD releases have all sorts of different serious issues (some are not even anamorphic). But just so you know, last year, in the Fall, I inquired about La Femme infidèle a.k.a. The Unfaithful Wife, as I really like this film but the DVD release is average at very best (very old transfer), and was told that at the moment there isn't a good HD master for it. I've also recently inquired about some of the big Rivette films, and the situation there is pretty much the same.

As you know, however, there are excellent masters for early Chabrol films**, so I would think that it is a matter of time before we see some of the classic films from his mid-period transition to Blu-ray. I think that most of Chabrol's best films are there... Les Biches, Innocents with Dirty Hands, etc.

When these films arrive on Blu-ray, however, they have to have substantial extras.

cool! thanks for the info, Pro-B! I just hope when we do get some more Chabrol on blu-ray that American audiences aren't shut out. I guess it doesn't mean much but that top 1000 poll that people were talking about the other day includes zero, yes 0, Chabrol films. hmmm.. that doesn't seem right at all!

This is a Criterion and Kino related question:

Deep Discount is currently running a BOGO sale on certain BDs. Two of the titles are the Kino releases of Tarkovsky's Sacrifice and Nostalghia (for a total of $26.99). Would these two BDs be a good blind buy at that price for a fan of Tarkovsky's Solaris (who has not seen any other Tarkovsky films)?
