I;ve said this before on this thread, but why have a 'flash' sale at all? Wouldn't it be easier for all parties, and presumably more profitable for Criterion, to announce a sale in advance? Especially when it's so heavily rumored now

No, because there still are "casual" fans who buy titles on a whim from the Criterion site. They have no idea a sale is coming so why should Criterion deter them from spending their money now instead of later?

It also allows a wave of publicity, as all the film afficionado forums and blogs simultaneously and very quickly run a "Criterion's having a sale" article they probably wouldn't if there were plenty of notice.

Not to mention flash sale announcements are a good reason to remain on Criterion's email list, which means the rest of the year Criterion gets to advertise at you for free (assuming they handle their email list in house).

These are the only two films on that top 25 list that I've seen.

I cannot say enough good things about Under the Skin (although I suppose that I actually have had said too many good things about it in this particular thread). It's my favorite film of the year, and it's one of the few films in recent memory that I bothered to see twice at the theater. I've revisited my Blu-ray a few times as well.

I saw The Babadook at a local theater a few weeks ago after reading a great many raving reviews that proclaimed it to be a game changer in horror cinema. It was a good movie, but it was also one of those movies that I really really wanted to like more than I actually did. I'm satisfied with just one viewing of this movie, and I have no inclination to purchase it on Blu-ray.

Much better list than what the Academy came up with. Most of those I've either seen and loved or really want to see.

Well atleast Snowpiercer is based on a Graphic Novel

what i found odd is there is no Tale of Princess Kaguya that has received awesome reviews too, and was my favorite of the ones i have seen so far released the past year.

My personal favorite movie of the century so far, Casino Royale (2006), is rocking out the #297 spot.

The Babadook was OK, nothing spectacular, so I am a bit puzzled by all the rave reviews.

For me, the ending completely ruined the film for me, there were some good moments but I found more annoying part than good :/

True, but they don't have to reveal the exact date of their flash sales. It makes it more of a mystery, and mysteries are good.

From what i have seen from your reviews you like a lot of the same movies i do, and i was a bit puzzled that you mentioned Captain America being on your top films, i don't have anything against superhero movies, i have seen almost all of them (mostly because most critics love them, but now i have learned my lesson), there are some good ones, and where you put it on your top list will obviously vary from each person tastes.

But if you really go out your way and see all the top reviewed films of this year i assure you some of the superhero films will probably end up lower, i think there were a lot of great films this year (more so than recent previous).

Thinking about it i think the last time one of them was on my best of a year list was Batman Begins, and after seeing it again i don't think it holds up that well.

I've only seen 6 and...

BOYHOOD... was underwhelmed

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL... couldn't finish it

BIRDMAN... found it completely uninteresting w/ no likable characters.. didn't finish this either

THE IMMIGRANT... learned that in Poland at the beginning of the 20th century, Polish people had never eaten, or even seen a banana.

GONE GIRL... had the pleasure of viewing a film that had the 2nd most plot holes I've ever witnessed in my viewing lifetime

FOXCATCHER... found out that all you have to do to get nominated for an Oscar is wear a ridiculously oversized prosthetic nose and talk really slow

of the 6, I have the warmest recollections of the Wes Anderson film and I like I said, I didn't finish it.

maybe this is what the other poster meant when he says that some posters are looking down at the younger generation.

I don't think they are amazing but I'm a sucker for superhero films :P don't know why but I do love watching the XMEN series (excluding a couple of the films).

I know they aint amazing and film that make you think - but its nice to sit back and just enjoy a film without thinking :P

I don't think i'd ever buy and own the film, but if its on Netflix i'll stick it on to chill out haha.
