I would never say he is over represented, as Kurosawa is pretty much one of the backbones of Criterion. This would be why others would want anything from him upgraded to blu. Who do you think has a film that should be released and why? Don't forget though, Criterion has to own the rights to his/her film.

I wasn't really disagreeing with you personally, just doesn't seem likely that Criterion would sit on potentially well selling releases, especially ones they already own the rights to, just to keep things more eclectic.

Other thing is that most Kurosawa and Bergman films are pretty good to great, so no reason to be upset if they release them all

![]() ![]() I'm not even sure it is a matter of subjectivity. Buñuel is the most underrepresented. 1 Blu-ray and that came 3 1/2 years ago. 2 of his most acclaimed films waiting for an upgrade. |

I think Kurosawa is probably only 8. If that number is from Criterion.com it probably is including the Yojimbo/Sanjuro box as another release.

$4 each? He should have sold them himself. They must already be doing really well for themselves to sell $20-30 discs, sealed, for such low prices. |

Another filmmaker woefully underrepresented in the new format is Vittorio DeSica. Think Bicycle Thieves, La Ciociara, Miracle in Milan, and Shoeshine. Kino has released some of his later rom-coms on BD but his better neorealist material is languishing except for Umberto D.

I don't think there's a bigger blind spot in the whole catalogue to be honest. I suspect that Rivette will only be truly appreciated in death now, as depressing a thought as that is.
