At least he has already 4 blu-rays, i have to say one of the most underrepresented in blu is Buñuel with just 1, based on all the releases he had on dvd, so is the most deserving of an upgrade or something new.

Bergman (10) has more blu-rays than Kurosawa (9).

Not that I'm complaining. I have them all(Autumn Sonata excepted).

I would never say he is over represented, as Kurosawa is pretty much one of the backbones of Criterion. This would be why others would want anything from him upgraded to blu. Who do you think has a film that should be released and why? Don't forget though, Criterion has to own the rights to his/her film.

I wasn't really disagreeing with you personally, just doesn't seem likely that Criterion would sit on potentially well selling releases, especially ones they already own the rights to, just to keep things more eclectic.

Other thing is that most Kurosawa and Bergman films are pretty good to great, so no reason to be upset if they release them all , if they release most of them the chances of them releasing all the other titles everyone wants would be higher.

I like you, Pedro.

I'm not even sure it is a matter of subjectivity. Buñuel is the most underrepresented. 1 Blu-ray and that came 3 1/2 years ago. 2 of his most acclaimed films waiting for an upgrade.

I think Kurosawa is probably only 8. If that number is from Criterion.com it probably is including the Yojimbo/Sanjuro box as another release.

I was tempted to get Seven Samurai but it was $30 used.

(Though the Newbury staff said many of this used were sealed)
So he called it quits on studying film and decided to sell a massive number of Criterion releases he never even bothered with? That's kind of depressing.

$4 each? He should have sold them himself. They must already be doing really well for themselves to sell $20-30 discs, sealed, for such low prices.

Another filmmaker woefully underrepresented in the new format is Vittorio DeSica. Think Bicycle Thieves, La Ciociara, Miracle in Milan, and Shoeshine. Kino has released some of his later rom-coms on BD but his better neorealist material is languishing except for Umberto D.

I agree that more De Sica would be an excellent addition.

I don't think there's a bigger blind spot in the whole catalogue to be honest. I suspect that Rivette will only be truly appreciated in death now, as depressing a thought as that is.

I thought the same, what kind of a college student has this amount of cash just to build a collection on a whim? Screw that guy.

Well let's hope Criterion is reading this and today's announcement includes Red Beard, Bicycle Thieves, The Exterminating Angel, City Of Sadness, A Brighter Summer Day, and 2046.

If Criterion announced 2046, I'd begrudgingly stop grumbling about them, for awhile.

The 85-minute version is US version, and yes it's cut because no distributor would take it in its 103 minute form. I have a copy of the OOP DVD. Apparently a PAL DVD of the UK version was released in Australia.

Excited to hear about how the new print/restoration looks at TCM Fest. Only a week or so to go.

Rivette? La Belle Noiseuse, one of the greatest films ever made. But long and impossible to find a good-looking edition (even the Japanese blu advertising an HD remaster looks like an upscale of the Japanese DVD I have).

Celine & Julie Go Boating (DVD)
The Story of Marie & Julien (DVD)
Le Pont du Nord just came out on blu.
