Great selections! Those would be amazing! Don't forget Ju Dou! There are a ton of great Chinese films that Criterion could release. Personally, though, I just want Criterion to release what's waiting in their Hulu catalog. Just get a ton of them out on Eclipse.

I've seen a few of his films and, like Renoir, I've been indifferent. That's my only hesitation with Mood and The River. Obviously the best thing to do is watch them ahead of time! I'm excited though, as both sound great.

Black stallion is a great movie but my vote for best horse movie from that time period is The Man from Snowy River. It's just not possible to beat the scene where he rides the horse down the hill. I know this is off topic but I had to say it.

So ... just before The Black is sold to L'Usine de Colle to pay off the lawsuits, a millionaire secretly buys him for a $1m (swearing Henry and The Boy to secrecy), renames him War Admiral, and races him in prestige races in the east. Don't worry. You may be made of steel, but if you're like me, there are parts of The Black Stallion that will get you choked up anyway. It's a beautiful film, and I do not say such things lightly. It is truly one of the few "blind buys" from Criterion that I think most sensitive film lovers will be happy with. Now if they'd just get Never Cry Wolf from Disney....

They did. From what I understand, Kino's rights to those two WKW films had expired, and they declined to renew them. They aren't listed on Kino's site anymore. There are still copies (but not many) available at Amazon -- both individually and in the bundle -- but expect to pay SRP or more. Last December I heard about them going OOP, and snagged a copy of the bundle for something like $25.

The other two WKW titles they released on DVD (but not BD) -- As Tears Go By and Days of Being Wild -- appear to still be in print.

According to Nancy Allen on Facebook, Criterion is releasing Dressed to Kill on Blu-ray and she has already done an interview for it.

Those are the four that jumped out to me, they are in desperate need of Blu-ray releases. The only one I haven't seen is To Have and Have Not, but that'll change soon as it's on my dvr. We may not have to wait much longer for Roman Holiday, I have a feeling it'll be coming this year since a new restoration premiered at the TCM film festival.

Wow, never saw that coming. I'd rather see movies in the collection that haven't had Blu-ray releases in the U.S., but no doubt I would buy it, glad I didn't buy the previous release. It's one of De Palma's films, IIRC, that steals way too obviously from Hitchcock, and some moments in the film just don't translate well in general, but it's stylish and fun.

That's kind of surprising, I thought they would do Sisters or Obsession or something not already available on bluray here. Dressed to Kill is great and one of my favorites from De Palma, right behind Carrie and Blow-Out. From what I've heard, the current US bluray is pretty lacking. They'll have a hard time outdoing Arrow though.

Ha, I was just thinking of Criterion releasing more De Palma yesterday and cringed a bit. Guess it's really happening.

By the way, can you please provide us with a screencapture of the conversation?

Thanks for the info! I've had my eye on these for a while, and I noticed the large price increase on Amazon. Fortunately, there's an eBay shop selling the bundle for ~$34 + shipping.

I think its cool that Dressed to Kill is getting a Criterion release BUT as much as I love this movie, its had a blu ray release and would rather have something not on blu ray instead of something that would make us decide to double dip. Im sure many of us WILL get the Criterion release but there is a lot that hasnt gotten an HD release.

Will Criterion be releasing ‘Chimes at Midnight’ on Blu-ray and DVD?

Quote:
As reported last week, Mr. Bongo Films has acquired the rights to Chimes at Midnight and will be releasing a restored Blu-ray and DVD in Europe on June 29 – but what about here in the States?

Veteran Hollywood columnist Anne Thompson hinted on her IndieWire blog today that the Criterion Collection will release the Orson Welles film on home video here. Thompson interviewed Criterion president Peter Becker and in the midst of a tribute to his work as an archivist and preservationist, she tossed out: "Will we ever see the right and proper version of Orson Welles' fractured masterpiece Chimes at Midnight? Watch this space."

If Chimes does appear on Criterion – a label known for its quality releases – it would hardly be surprising.

At the Sedona International Film Festival in February, Beatrice Welles told audiences she was thrilled to report that a major DVD/Blu-ray label would be restoring and releasing Chimes at Midnight, her father's favorite film.

Criterion is handling the upcoming release of Othello for the Welles' Estate.

The label has made no official statement on either Welles title.

Criterion is no stranger to the Welles catalog having released several major titles on laser disc, DVD and Blu-ray with impressive results.

Let's hope Thompson is right.

Further, it would be wonderful if Criterion had access to the almost pristine 35mm print uncovered earlier this year by Distribpix Inc.'s Steven Morowitz and filmmaker Joel Bender.

I enjoy the Hawks version of the story a great deal but I think the later Curtiz version The Breaking Point is a better film. It's about as grim a noir as there is from that era and Garfield is excellent as Harry. I always feel like To Have and Have Not is the more entertaining version but the Curtiz film is the more realistic one, if that makes sense. I'll also add that the closing scene is about as sad and haunting as any I've seen.
