Do you think the film is also a bit dated too?

If there's any film out there that I can think of that is rather dated, its Broadcast News (which is still a good film in my opinion).

Why didn't Criterion release "Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman" in the set, as well? Rights?

I would love to see what Criterion could do with Children of Men.

...seems like a film that's tailor made for a Criterion release.

Just a quick note about The Rose.

I finished viewing it and now will go through the extras and publish the review. It should be up very late tonight or in the morning.

The presentation is outstanding. The film, which was rescanned in 4K, looks magnificent on Blu-ray

While I love the movie, I am curious why you feel that it needs a Criterion release.

Yeah, my personal preference is that Criterion focus on bringing films to blu that haven't yet had an HD release.

Unless current release sucks, is bare-bones, a new restoration has been done or has a different cut, which i don't think is the case with Children of Men.

Worth noting they didn't say need, they said they would love to see what Criterion would do.

Do we have to have these snotty posts anytime someone says they would be interested in something?

Didn't say it needs one.

Just think it would be really cool.

...Criterion makes everything better.

I'd love to see Blade Runner with a Criterion release, even though it's already got one of the most comprehensive blu-ray packages ever put out.

I wasn't being snotty? I was just curious what he meant. Given that it is a Criterion DISCUSSION thread, I thought we could discuss his idea. It's not an idea entirely without merit either, given that Cuaron has some earlier work in the Criterion Collection. Though I have to agree with pedro and javi that the current release of Children of Men will likely be the only one released for a while.

And I agree with you Ray - Simple inclusion in the Criterion Collection does raise a film's status. I love the way they treat a movie like a work of art. Some of the included books and supplemental materials are nearly as intriguing as the films themselves.

I find the way people jump on other people when they suggest a movie that already exists in the world to be snotty. If you were looking to start a conversation and I misread you, I apologise.

I'd love a Criterion Kubrick box set (to get on board the bandwagon of existing movies on blu-ray that I "want" on Criterion).

Default The River

After watching The River last night I cannot stop reflecting on it. It was such a simple movie yet very powerful and moving. To me it was a movie about innocence, the loss of it, and life. It was really nice and refreshing to watch such a simple movie, with a very simple message we are always told yet often seem to forget. It was a bit slow at the start and I questioned if it was a good blind-buy but once you get to know the characters and fully understand what Renoir is conveying it is a wonderful movie. In addition to the films message, I am left speechless by the beautiful technicolor, the restoration and blu-ray are superb. Maybe it was just me but occasionally I felt like the color would shift a little from red to blue, but I'm guessing that just has to do with the age of the film and certain strips in better conditions than others. The level of detail was amazing, and the setting could not have been better. I would highly recommend this film to everyone, there are many films in the collection that only appeal to certain people but I feel that this movie would appeal to everyone, and the message is one that we can all use and appreciate. I think my favorite part of the movie was Mr. John's Soliloquy (one of the best in a film) I am putting a link to it in the spoiler for anyone interested

One side note, I really wish Criterion would include a restoration/making of extra for each film showing the restoration process or clips of them working on the film and explaining why they chose certain temperatures or color spectrums

Instead we get WB re releasing the same set over and over just tweaking the packaging... Kubrick deserves better.

If Criterion could get the rights, I'm sure Jan Harlan would happily work closely with Criterion to get the best set released.

Warner isn't letting any of their Kubrick films go. Ever.

Personally speaking, I'd much rather Criterion's efforts were put towards films that haven't got the attention Warner has given Kubrick. The WB Kubrick releases are fine. I don't care about repackagings of existing discs - they can do that every year if they want. Eventually they'll do a new master for 2001 and I may grab that (the 2008 BD was great for its time of release but could be improved upon now), but honestly I have much, much higher priorities on my wish list than rebuying releases that already serve me well enough still today.

No I agree, there are many films in desperate need on an upgrade/restoration... its just frustrating seeing money wasted by WB on re releasing the same thing over and over.

Every now and then I explore the DVD side of Criterion and I'm shocked and some of the gems I find!

One of my favorite films. While the current blu-ray is top notch, I would love to see this on Criterion. They could definitely do awesome things with this.

I agree. Sometimes on here, if you mention something, you get a really pretentious response telling you how stupid you are or how you don't know enough about film. It's bullshit.
