I used to own the comprehensive Herzog DVD box sets back before I streamlined my DVD collection and, truth be told, I have no desire to see most of those movies again. I respect and appreciate the artistry and subversiveness of films like Heart of Glass and Even Dwarfs Started Small, but one viewing of those is enough for me. This is why I opted for the stand-alone discs of my favorites.
I'm with you on the last two, but The Enigma of Kasper Hauser and Stroszek are pretty solid. They could possibly get standalone releases and are well worth it, IMO.

But yeah, to the topic of the thread, they won't be on Criterion.

One assumes he meant releasing the titles one at a time, separated by several months.

Criterion has been releasing the Chaplin films very slowly and it took them awhile to even get anything out. This caused some frustration with Chaplin fans.

Shout in the U.S. and BFI in the UK.

Especially because they decided to wait and release City Lights as their fifth title when I'm sure most would have assumed it the obvious candidate for the first release some years earlier.

Well all I can say is if this Shout company can't release Aguirre with a single special features mini-doc or cast/director interview, then somebody step in and let Criterion do it right for god's sake.

...it's a masterpiece that deserves better than it received on the initial release.

The UK disc has plenty of extras.

These are the release dates for Chaplin:

November 2010 - Modern Times
May 2011 - The Great Dictator
June 2012 - The Gold Rush
March 2013 - Monsieur Verdoux
November 2013 - City Lights
May 2015 - Limelight

Herzog has more films so we'd probably be looking at 1 (2 at most) film a year and possibly an Eclipse set for his "lesser known" films.

I am about to dig into this set, and I was wondering what the preferred language to watch these films is. I know "Journey to Italy" only has the English version, but how about "Stromboli" and "Europa 51" since they have both?

Hey guys, wanna help me out on something? I just watched Repo Man for the first time last night...and...what?! I guess I just don't "get it". It was probably the worst acting, across the board, that I've ever seen in a film. And I've seen The Room plenty of times. There was almost no story whatsoever, just chasing down a weird car with something (aliens) in the trunk? Then all of a sudden it turns into a Scooby Doo episode on the final moments. There was like, no redeeming factors to this film, yet it's very highly regarded and so many people love it. What am I missing?

That means the next Chaplin will probably be out around 2016 , wish they had gone the route of Artificial Eye releasing everything in 3 months, which means there probably is a box set coming later in UK.

The transfer comes from the same old Universal master Eureka accessed for the Region-B release in 2010. However, there is plenty of additional work done here that tones down the light built-in sharpening and gives the film a much more stable organic appearance. (The grain also moves rather awkwardly on the Region-B release). Criterion's release is the one to own.

It is within the 4.25/5.00 mark for me. It looks a bit dated, but overall it is better balanced than Sullivan's Travels (also from an older Universal master). Ideally, now that we are 8+ years into Blu-ray's cycle, there should be new scans for these films.

Regardless, an American masterpiece that should not be missed.

Pro-B
I remember being underwhelmed by this film when I first saw it, and to a certain degree puzzled. I certainly appreciated the message behind it and the poignancy but to be honest, the moments and scenes that were supposed to be the "tearjerkers" failed to produce the desired effect - in fact, they were rather hilarious, unintentionally so. The tragic parts weren't hard-hitting, the supposedly "mean" characters were rather tame. There were mildly touching moments, of course, but nowhere near as heart-rending as I had been led to believe. I was shocked and guilty to find myself more often amused by what I saw on screen than actually being sad and thoughtful. It was almost like McCarey was trying to make a serious film but no matter how he tried it still ended up bordering on comedy.

It was most certainly a good film, though, and I'll give it another try sometime soon.

Repo Man has an appeal for those of us who were into punk rock and the whole anti-establishment mentality back in the 1980s. I won't go so far as to say that it's a "You had to be there." sort of movie, but having been there certainly helps.

One of my favorite scenes in the entire Collection is the one where Otto is eating from the can that is labeled, "Food."
"Put it on a plate, son. You'll enjoy it more."
"Couldn't enjoy it any more, Mom. Mm, mm, mmm."

So many quotes in this flick "The more you drive, the less intelligent you are"

I mean, while I wasn't born until '88, I've been into the punk/DIY scene since a early teen. One of my favorite bands is Minor Threat. I've booked shows and been to so many hardcore shows I can't even keep my head straight. I feel like SLC Punk was a better film to get some punk vibes in the movie world.

I had the same response to Repo Man. Just didn't get it. It was a slog to sit through and when it ended I wished I hadn't bought it.

The entire time I was watching it, I was pretending this was a prequel to the Mighty Ducks and this is the story of Gordon Bombay's young adult life. After he quit hockey from being a 10 year old failure, and before he decided to go to law school. And that's why in the Mighty Ducks he ended up getting a DUI, because he couldn't shake his heavy drinking/drug usage from his punk days.
