I am SO thrilled about the "Twin Peaks" news. OTOH, it means that I'm going to have to subscribe to Showtime for some period of time, which I don't want to do. But oh well.

Totally forgot today was (supposed to be) an announcement day! I come here now and am disappointed to find out it's been moved to Monday. Oh well...a few more days won't hurt, but it better be worth it!

Well, we would be disappointed when the change happens, but just one time.
This.

I am grateful that we know approximately when the titles will be released each month so we can share in the excitement. I LOVE release day because social media blows up. Looking forward to Monday.

I'd hate them to do random releases.

I like having a date to look forward too... what else can I do when you work most days lol

Ohh excellent point. I could see Lynch's PR team wanting to give a bit of breathing room for the Twin Peaks update to have its "moment" before a Mulholland Drive announcement.

I finally caught Clouds Of Sils Maria yesterday, as it's opened here now. I think it's Assayas' most interesting film for some time, and it's certainly the most textually analytical film for an age, and the one that serves as a reminder of his time as a critic at Cahiers du cinema. It's going to make a fantastic addition to the collection.

How was Kristen Stewart? I always find she acts the same in all her films but she seemed to have got great reviews for this role O,o

She's great. I'm only really familiar with her work in Adventureland and Panic Room, but she was the highlight of this for me. The role (and film itself) is very much concerned with deconstructing the notion of the tween starlet, and the type of film's she's best known for.

Along with The Age of Innocence and Summertime that someone else mentioned, this would also make me extremely happy.
I think there would be room for improvement on the existing releases.
But can Criterion release an Ivory film now?

Quite possibly, also, it can be to announce a great duet: for example, if they tried to buy The Third Man from StudioCanal after their man saw it on Thursday in Cannes

I say this because, the fact that Mulholland Drive finally comes to Criterion may be linked to a renewed relationship with StudioCanal, and not at all to Universal.
FWIK from documents I could read, StudioCanal had at the time of the sale to Universal a sales mandate of 20 years from Alain Sarde Films. (Now StudioCanal owns every rights on the film for "perpetuity", as they inherited the rights from their affiliate Alain Sarde Films when this affilate was dissolved some years later)
So the maximum length of all the distributors contracts written at that time was 20 years.
So possibly, Universal contract is nearing its end this year. Another possibility, it was not at its end, but StudioCanal has bought the remaining years (possibly just one year if it was 15 years, and not for much as there is not much money on video sales to get in the 15th year), to allow Criterion to access it. Third possibility, Universal still owns it for years (possibly until 2021) but StudioCanal ask its licensee (Universal) to accept the Criterion deal (licensors have sometimes these kind of rights guaranteed by contract).

Whatever the Universal contract is, I do not see this happening without StudioCanal: even if Universal still has the rights, I do not see Criterion acquiring a video license from Universal on Mulholland Drive only for 6 years at the most (and possibly for much shorter period, if it was not 20 years). So they probably have obtained too additional years from StudioCanal.

So why not The Third Man too on Monday

(It is the best time for such a The Third Man release to happen for StudioCanal: with an almost simultaneous release in Europe and North America, the news would kill the import from UK/France, and the US video rights would have a higher value than in some months or years after imports have limited the sales Criterion could do on The Third Man)

Ok I am raving.. !
But I would not be surprised if all this happens...

I own the existing Criterion Blu-ray of The Third Man, after having purchased it for $75 or so last year, and I also still own the existing StudioCanal Blu-ray.

I will happily buy a third Blu-ray of The Third Man after the 4K restoration comes out, though. It seems fitting, somehow, to have "the third disc."

I'll second that Stewart was great, as was Binoche. Clouds of Sils Maria is going to fit well in the collection. It'll benefit from repeat viewings and a good amount of supplements, plus it'll probably sell because of Stewart.

Me too. Even with the inevitable 'meh, nothing for me this month' second-guessing (and even that's usually fairly restrained in here) it's just a fun day overall.

I would be over the moon if Criterion releases After Hours. Already a nice surprise releasing The Rose. But another major favorite of mine?

I'm firmly in the camp that would much rather see The Big Clock than After Hours but that said, I'd almost certainly pick up After Hours at some point too.

If I've seen it at all it was many years ago and I'm always up for giving something like that another look.

I'd be really thrilled if Criterion released After Hours. I've been holding off on watching this film again recently because I'm waiting for the Criterion release to have a fresh rediscovery of this really entertaining film.

Yes! I'm psyched that Lynch is back on board with the new reboot of Twin Peaks. Still need time to soak in this good news.
