Curious how you will react. I'm one of the few who liked the remake, but the original is superior in so many ways. The remake ditches a lot of the philosophical depth, which was my favorite aspect.

As for potential Tarkovsky in the future, I'm with Polaroid that Mirror would be my first choice, but both it and Stalker are overdue for a good Blu-Ray release.

I would love to see Stalker and The Mirror, but if we are being realistic it seems that Kino still has the rights to those. Why Kino hasn't released them on Blu-ray is beyond me.

The Mirror for me has more memorable moments and is so beautiful - I have no idea why it doesn't get discuss more, the floating scene was executed so well.

Although I do find the final moment of Stalker so perfect... Gah I want to watch some Tarkovsky now lol

Forgive my ignorance, but why does that seem so?

In the past they've released all his films on DVD in region A territories, and have started to release them on blu-ray very very slowly. I think it's safe to presume they still hold rights to the rest. Artificial Eye in the UK have unofficially announced they are preparing his films for release in 2015, so hopefully that happens and they decide to do a box set so we get them sooner rather than later.

This isn't exactly at the top of my wishlist but it's definitely up there, it would be totally unexpected and nobody else is going to be releasing it anytime soon (ie ever, probably).

Between those three factors my delight level would be through the roof if I ever awoke to that hint/clue/announcement.
Charley Varrick is an overlooked gem. Top-tier Don Siegel with Walter Matthau playing against type in a rare leading role. Would love to see this on blu. If I had to bet on it, though, I'd say it's the kind of film that Shout! Factory might release.

Better not disappoint :P!
There is some value to including a delay between the films, at least in first viewing. There's some banter between the characters in the second film about how events unfolded when they first met. To me it was nice to have the time void where I wasn't exactly sure how some of it happened, added to the tension between them.

1. Which of Criterion's past announcements most excited you? In other words, which single release, when announced, made you say "OMG, YES!!!!"?

2. Which future release, if announced, would most excite you? Disregard the probability of it actually happening. In other words, you can include Warner Bros, or even Disney titles, in your wished-for release.

My answers:

1. Red River
2. The Big Sleep (both cuts)
1. Paths of Glory
2. Pygmalion

I was eleven or twelve when I first saw it and there's a ton of nostalgia appeal because it was one of the first movies I saw completely on my own. I didn't get dropped off or picked up, I didn't meet any friends - the whole thing was very independent and I absolutely loved the movie.

Imagine my delight when it not only held up over the years but actually got better

Criterion has a solid relationship with Universal and it is kind of in Criterion's wheelhouse (well, one of their many wheelhouses, anyway) but yeah, it's definitely a longshot.

Koch Media is releasing it in Germany this year though so hope springs eternal and whatnot.

1. Nashville. I'm a huge Altman fan and had never gotten a chance to see it. The only Criterion I've ever purchased day one.
Some honorable mentions include any Ozu announcement, Tess, and Breaking the Waves.

2. The Decalogue (now that it has been rumored that Twilight Time is picking up Fat City).

The only De Palma film I can say that I like without hesitation is Carrie. There are others that I find reasonably good (Blow Out, and Casualties of War -- and even Mission: Impossible had its moments). But pretty much everything else of his that I've seen I dislike. Dressed to Kill, especially, I thought was a second- or third-rate attempt at pretending to be Hitchcock.

My answers:

1. Red River
2. The Big Sleep (both cuts)
My answers:

1. Difficult to decide. It's a toss up among My Darling Clementine (my favorite Western of all time), The River (my #2 choice for Criterion LD/DVD upgrade, behind only Kwaidan) and The Complete Jacques Tati.

2. I'm going to cheat. My favorite future release that, despite not being officially announced yet, we know is coming is The Apu Trilogy. My favorite Make a Wish title would be a toss up between Raise the Red Lantern and Farewell to My Concubine.

Yes! There was so many scenes that felt like they were trying to be Hitchcockian (is that even a term lol). But it just felt silly and unoriginal lol...

I loved Carrie, the remake was so bad >.>

For Tarkovsky, my vote would be for Andrei Rublev (which has been #3 on my Criterion LD/DVD upgrade wish list).

I've always thought that Dressed to Kill was a very self-aware adaptation of Psycho.

I couldn't get Psycho out of my head when watching it lol ... was too much XD

Now you mention it it does really feel like a full adaptation lol on that subject - what is Gus Van Sants Psycho like? I have never seen, but I'm a huge fan of his films, Elephant in particular (which would be nice in collection)!

There was at least one point: Christopher Doyle's cinematography. Otherwise, you're right...pointless.

2. A Blu-ray box(s) of Mikio Naruse Films
