You can add my name to the list of folk who don't particularly rate the work of David Mamet. I remember the discourse around the time House Of Games was released that seemed to suggest that there was very much a US-lean in terms of the appreciation of his work.

Not directly Criterion-related, but still sad...

Christopher Lee dies at the age of 93

My eulogy that I just posted on Facebook...

I'm saddened to hear of Sir Christopher Lee's passing, because he has always been one of my favorite actors. Lee is probably best known for his work in the glorious Hammer Studios horror films of the 1950s and 1960s, namely The Curse of Frankenstein, Horror of Dracula, and The Devil Rides Out, but he also played my favorite James Bond villain, Francisco Scaramanga, in the 1974 film, The Man with the Golden Gun. His sinister role in the 1973 horror masterpiece, The Wicker Man, is one for the ages.
A few more of my favorite Christopher Lee roles include The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, An Eye for an Eye (with Chuck Norris), and, of course, Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and George Lucas's Star Wars prequel films. Lee was knighted in 2009 for his film accomplishments and for his contributions to charities.
In his commentary track for The Man with the Golden Gun, Roger Moore spends a long while discussing the awesomeness of his co-star, and he goes into great detail about how Lee was able to speak about 10 different languages with the utmost fluency.
Somewhere up in Heaven, Sir Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing are probably catching up and talking about their Hammer Horror days when they respectively played roles as Dracula and Van Helsing.

93 years is a pretty good run. Not as if he got short changed.

And he kept acting, too. Seems he lived very long doing something he loved.

Christopher Lee even returned to the Hammer Studios horror queue in fine fashion for The Resident in 2011, even if his appearance was a brief one.

I'll never forget Lee's work. I saw a re-release of The Wicker Man in theaters last year and that was a thrill. The man never retired from acting even at the age of 93. That's the right philosophy for life... retiring is pretty much quitting/giving up in my opinion. Where's the meaning remaining in life if you're retired? Sean Connery could learn something from his fellow countryman down south.

I just finished watching A Master Builder and I really enjoyed it.

I don't necessarily see any replay value to it, but I definitely think you folks should check it out in one capacity or the other (it's available on Amazon Instant Video).

I have fewer than 11 years to go until I retire from state government. If I'm still there in 11 years, then the only thing that my co-workers are going to see will be my tail going out that door.

I will, however, continue working at a post-retirement job indefinitely. Maybe something genuinely fun, like in the Criterion office, for instance.

With this sad news, I can't help but be reminded that just last week I bought a used DVD of Dracula A.D. 1972. FWIW, the reason I bought it is that the movie ties into a photo that Caroline Munro autographed for me, of her with Christopher Lee from that same movie. (Caroline Munro was a guest at the "O Comic Con" event that I attended in Iowa 2 weeks ago). I specifically chose that picture to be autographed because of Christopher Lee being in it (and of course because it was a great looking photo). He was special, no doubt!

In case anybody is wondering, here's the autographed pic I'm talking about. I hope this is appropriate. R.I.P. Mr. Lee.

FWIW the Studio Canal version of Le Cercle Rouge is down to just over £10 on Amazon.uk. I ordered a copy and will likely sell my Criterion

Sad news indeed. But you left out my favorite role of his: Rochefort in Richard Lester's Musketeers films. (Slightly edges out Lord Summerisle in The Wicker Man).

At one of my reviews my boss asked 'so are you happy here' to which I replied 'well, let me put it this way, you know those people who win the lottery and keep working...I would not be one of them'.

He took it in the spirit intended.

In tribute, watching Mr. Lee tonight in one of his finest roles, as Count Dracula in the Hammer film, the Horror of Dracula (1958).
