I'd recommend it for a view or two. It's definitely thought provoking and hands down Brit Marling's best film to date.

1. Brit Marling is hot.
2. Another Earth is extremely low-key, but it's also extremely engaging from what I remember when I rented it a few years ago.
3. I'm of the opinion that the 1969 film, Journey to the Far Side of the Sun, handled the subject matter a little better, but Another Earth is rewarding in a different and quieter sort of way.

Good but not great?

...sounds like that's what you're saying.

What did you like most about it?

Anything you didn't like about it?

I enjoy my job marginally more than I would enjoy being a homeless person.

Actually, it does have its perks. I do environmental inspections in the north Georgia mountain counties, and it often takes me two or three hours just to get to each inspection site. So, basically, I get paid to drive on scenic mountain roads and listen to my favorite radio station for several hours each day.

It's also genuinely rewarding to work in environmental protection. We should all really think about what kind of world we are going to be leaving behind for Keith Richards.

I'd like to think that I'm the type of person who would not work if I did not have to work, but I'd probably be bouncing off the walls if I spent every day at home watching Blu-rays day in day out.

Sounds like you're somewhat lukewarm about it?

What did you think of the sci-fi aspect of the story?

...most people I've talked to seem to be downplaying it quite a bit.

Another Earth is 95% low-key drama and 5% science fiction. It's not exactly mumblecore cinema, but it's not far removed from that.

The odd thing is that I feel like I have less time in the day without a job than I did with a job. I'm not quite sure how that works.

(It's not that I don't work, exactly...I'm a househusband.)

I liked the ambiguous ending and the thought provoking concept. It's definitely a slow burner at times, though, and I don't really find it to be great for repeat viewings.

I've been going through this recently. At my new office, I work four 10-hour days Monday through Thursday, and I have Fridays off.

Whenever my three-day weekend rolls around, I'm excited, because I know that I'll have three uninterrupted days to go running, read, and watch a ton of Blu-rays. Somehow, though, at the end of each three-day weekend, I've only had time to watch three or four movies, and I'm always wondering, "WTF?"

I've made an effort to start dating again, so I've been on a few dates in recent weekends. (In all honesty, I'd rather have stayed home and watched Criterions than have gone on a couple of those dates.) More importantly, though, I'm in the process of buying a townhouse, and that's been taking up a lot of my time over the past week. This is my first rodeo when it comes to home ownership, and it's pretty daunting and exciting at the same time.

Strong opinions? No. But I liked it. It's one of a number of really good indie SF films I've seen over the last several years, probably somewhere in the middle of the pack. Rather low-key, so it's best not watched when you're feeling tired, or in the mood for something in the vein of Edge of Tomorrow.

I really like that kind of sci fi although it is certainly more of a drama, certainly recommended, and if you like it check one called Coherence

See, if you have a great job (working at Criterion) you love like that, how could a person retire! Of course that same philosophy I stated earlier about not retiring ONLY APPLIES to jobs/careers people love. If its a sh#tty job, well, hell, I'd be asking for an early resignation.

I remember seeing this one a year or two ago. It's totally melodramatic and smart sci-fi, kind of in the vein of Lars von Trier's "Melancholia" or Andrew Niccol's "Gattaca". Director Mike Cahill seems to specialize in brainy, low-fi sci fi which is just simply awesome. It's also an introspective, tragic, ominous and quite cerebral picture. I liked this one a lot but I wish they had a bigger budget to add some more special effects to make this one just mindblowing.

I know what you mean. I work three 12 hour days, having 4 days off. Yet, in that time I only manage to watch 3 or 4 films as I get so tired from work. A year or two ago I didn't work and I watched movies all the time. I actually miss that a lot, but at the same time... By working I can afford to buy the movies that I want, whereas I couldn't back then. It's really a double-edged sword, having a job.

Just watched The Black Stallion and I don't believe the hype. Not very interesting and the kid irritated me. There's $25ish I don't have to spend at least!

So, I checked a few pages but I can't see anything about this. Why are numerous Criterion blurays selling for 2.43-3.93 on Amazon.ca? Must be an error, so jump on it quick I guess. I'm gonna snag up a few.

There's a link to one. Just so you guys don't think I'm joking.

OMG, you're right!!
I did a test and reached checkout and it's 15 euros for 7 Criterions!!!
Although the shipping is 30, so that goes up to 45 euros but this is still, 6,5 euros per Bluray!

Are we sure they're new??

Just one more question:
Are the Canadian Criterion Blurays EXACTLY the same (packaging and all) with the US Criterion Blurays?
Because I see here in the database there are different pages for each.
I thought Canada would just sell the imported US Blurays.

edit: another difference for example I see.
On the waterfront is 2 Blurays but the Canadian Criterion release is 1! (as it says here in the site)

I just ordered 65 films from the Criterion Collection on Amazon.ca. They are all at discount for a reason unknown to me on. Hurry up while there is still time.
