How so?

Yes, the material is rather conventional, but De Palma's direction is assured and the performances by Margot Kidder and Jennifer Salt are fantastic!

Can you recommend any region locked Australian blus that have great editions/PQ, etc? I'd be interested in seeing what kind of deals I could get on imported titles. Thanks in advance!

The local store had oodles of copies of l'avventura, but no Ride the Pink Horse. Ordered that and reserved a copy of Hiroshima Mon Amour, which is supposed to be released on the 14th, according to the salesclerk.

Default two cents on recently discussed titles...

Don't Look Now - some of the best 'horror' films, IMO, use the typical horror tropes but to great effect. Rosemary's Baby, for example, is chock full of them. I think that there is a really good balance between those cliches and artfulness in DLN.

Carlos - great film. I only wish (and I've probably said this a few times) that even the spoken English language parts were subtitled because the film has characters from seemingly every part of the world speaking English - all with different accents.

RE: De Palma

I don't find any of his films to be interesting. They all feel like cheap, B-versions of Hitchcock's works.

I do really love Passion, though, but I have not seen the original, so I wonder if my opinion would change.

^I on the other hand like a fair number of De Palma's movies, especially his Hitchcock inspired thrillers and thought Passion was a big dud.

Watched my copy of The 400 Blows that I bought yesterday and it was completely fantastic. My sale blind buys are off to a good start.
If I can scrounge up some more cash I will definitely go blind buy Jules and Jim.

DePalma seems to be either loved or loathed due to his obvious influences and his gratuitous nudity etc. I'm in the camp that likes him. Carlitos Way, Untouchables, Scarface, Body Double, Dressed to Kill, Obsession, Sisters, Femme Fatale, Passion, Blow Out, Casualties of War, and even Snake Eyes were all very likable to me. I still need to see Raising Cain.

Sidenote: Has anyone noticed that BN.com will not give you any results when searching for any blu-ray movies. I've been ordering blu-rays from them for years and now they won't let me pull up a blu-ray in a search without entering the specific UPC. I have a feeling they don't want people price matching their online prices anymore, or they could just be having issues with their website. But it is very strange indeed.

My girlfriend works in a BN (where I worked a couple years back), and she has been saying that the search engine BN uses (which is both for their website as well as the internal searches in the stores) have been quite horrible lately, and that its part of this ongoing project. There was an update a little while back that just made it screwier.

For example, if you search Pride and Prejudice, the traditional Penguin classic comes up far down the list and instead various movie tie-ins and print on demand titles have been coming up first (typing in Pride and Prejudice Penguin will rectify this, which is absurd).

So to answer your question, its just the website.

Count me in the camp that loves his films. His filmmaking style really pulls me in, even when some of his films' plots get outlandish or don't appear to hold up. And I say this as a huge fan of many of the films/filmmakers that his films reference/allude to.

I noticed that as well yesterday... I had gone on the website to check the in-store availability of the 4 titles I wanted to buy on my way home from work. Typing in "Killers Criterion" would lead to no results found.

Thanks for the response. I sure am glad I didn't renew my membership yesterday then because I never buy my blu-rays from BN in-store unless there's a sale because they're ridiculously overpriced. If I can't even pull up a blu-ray in a simple search anymore then they just lost my business.

I wish I could give you more than one thumbs up. This is my favorite Chaplin, and one of my most anticipated releases.

I love me some Chaplin, but this is one of the few I haven't seen. Very anxious for this release.

I already own the MoC Blu-ray of this awesome and understated movie, but I want the Melville documentary, and I also feel as though I should support Jean-Pierre Melville in any general sense that I can.
What an amazing film. I watched it two months ago.

My haul from last night:

M and Summer with Monika are great, Tess is too but this is to replace my dual format digipack, and Videodrome I thought was very weird but cool (love the packaging, and I wanna check out that Fear on Film roundtable with Cronenberg, Carpenter and Landis from '82!). The others I haven't seen, I've been very curious about Don't Look Now, I wanted to see some more black and white horror and Island of Lost Souls and The Innocents fit the bill, and Valerie intrigued me with its surreal nature and premise.

There's so much more I want to pick up but I have to scale it back this time. I was looking for The Night of the Hunter to replace my digipack but the copy there wasn't in the best condition, and Blue is the Warmest Color since I'm tired of waiting for the special edition and it's cheap, but it wasn't there. I'll have to return for those two.

A film buff employee who I've seen there and talked to before was there again, he's an older gentleman, and he saw me come up to the checkout with my pre-meditated stack (didn't wander off my wishlist this time) and proceeded to quickly walk me through some titles he liked to recommend and gauge my taste. He's a tad pushy but nice and passionate, plus I'm glad he did give me a brief rundown because he made some titles sound interesting (i.e. Bigger Than Life) and he keeps recommending Ace in the Hole, which I will eventually get around to, but more importantly he showed me a different smaller section where I found Island and Tess! Anyway, a fun evening excursion, I gazed at the collectibles and action figures there too.
