Wow what a great month October is. Cronenberg, Kobayashi, and Lynch all at the same time is amazing.
The Kwaiden announcement was a big surprise to me. They did talk about releasing it a few years ago but I thought they had given up on it. I love Kobayashi. I'm not too concerned about cover art, but that Muhulland Dr. cover is another ugly one in a series of recently poor designs by Criterion. |

Now that Mulholland Dr. and The Brood will be released, I wonder what people will complain about now?
I'm definitely getting My Own Private Idaho, and I'm interested in Kwaidan (though I'll screen that on Hulu first; that's an awesome cover, too) and A Special Day (because of Marcello and Sophia). No Bergman or Powell & Pressburger, but I'll just keep on hoping we'll see some more. |

A Special Day sounds very interesting, I might have to pick that one up. My Own Private Idaho and Kwaidan are must owns, but I'll be surprised if there aren't UK releases for them so will probably hold out.
A Brighter Summer Day would be more than justified. |

They're both crazy awesome.
The Uninvited is quite innocuous at first glance, but it features some genuinely spooky moments even by today's standards. A disclaimer that, in my User Review, I gushed more about this movie than most people seem to, but I stand by my recommendation. The Innocents is probably a safer bet for one uninitiated for older black-and-white cinema, and it features the wonderful Deborah Kerr, along with terrific child actors. This one freaks a lot of people out, even today. |

They're both very well done and very atmospheric. The Uninvited is a little too light in tone for me to consider it a top tier ghost story like The Haunting but it's good.
The Innocents is fantastic. It's right up there with The Haunting and Rosemary's Baby. Caveat: they're both pretty slow and atmospheric so read all the breathless praise (including mine) with an unspoken 'if you like that sort of thing' at the end. |

Thank you both! Good to hear differing opinions. I'm debating whether to get one of them or both... Probably both! |

Completely random "old" question: I saw there was a laserdisc announcement for A Few Good Men back in the good old days.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...rdisc_releases Was there ever a cover? Announcement of extras? I really wish this had come to fruition. Last edited by IndyMLVC; 07-16-2015 at 01:11 AM. |

Lynch is odd though. Criterion specializes to a degree in creating the complete experience. Lots of supplemental material. Lynch is pretty consistent about not giving interviews or commentary tracks to his movies. Eraserhead had some Lynch short films, but I wonder what sort of supplemental material will be on Mulholland Dr. I'm not a big supplemental material fan to begin with, I generally just buy a movie for the movie, but I am curious what could go on this disc. I suppose archival interviews from Lynch, who is always fascinating in interviews. **edit*** I guess this the supplemental material question is answered in the press release. New Lynch Watts and Harring interviews. Very cool. |

Excited to finally see upgrade to Kwaidadn, especially liking the extras. Interview from 1993 with Kobayashi, conducted by filmmaker Masahiro Shinoda? Yes, please! Also, i love that updated cover with the smoke.
Also, the Mulholland Drive announcement is super nice because nobody is going to be posting about when it is going to be released. 😁 |

I personally loved both films, and have re-watched them many times.
The Uninvited is a straight-forward ghost story with a mystery element to it. It's well-acted by Ray Milland, Ruth Hussey and Gail Russell; beautifully photographed by Charles Lang (who received an Oscar nomination for his stunning black-and-white cinematography); and it introduced the classic song, "Stella by Starlight". It was popular enough to inspire a sort of "companion film", The Unseen, in 1945. I had seen the film many times before, and it was a Day One purchase for me. The Innocents is a psychological ghost story that remains intriguingly open-ended. It's based on Henry James' The Turn of the Screw, and was warmly received by The National Board of Review, which named it one of the Top Ten Films of the year, and bestowed their Best Director Award on Jack Clayton. Truman Capote helped to adapt the novel for the screen, and it was beautifully filmed in CinemaScope by Freddie Francis. Deborah Kerr gives an outstanding performance as a repressed Victorian governess, and Martin Stephens and Pamela Franklin are creepy as her innocent (?) charges. The Criterion transfer is phenomenal. Hope that helps! |

The Innocents is on another level. It is basically the ideal, gothic horror, and has some of the creepiest moments in all of film, yet under the surface is a psychological conflict. Deborah Kerr is always amazing, but she's a different sort of amazing here. I like them both, but agree with Owl that it's safer, more accessible, and frankly the better film. |
