The increase in quality on silent films is the same increase on any other, from any other era. High definition is simply way better.

Le Deuxième Souffle is also now on Itunes in HD. I will have to rent it, as I haven't seen it before. Hopefully a bluray upgrade is soon. |

The Brood and Kwaidan on BD? sounds like a nice Halloween thing going on with Criterion.
I saw The Brood as a kid and thought it was disgusting, one of Cronenberg's underrated. Kwaidan i saw on video at 14 and thought it was an excellent horror anthology like Dead of Night or Creepshow. The Woman in The Snow story is the best one! and did Tales From The Darkside's Lovers Vow story reminded anyone of Kwaidan? Who wants Criterion to do Dead of Night (1945)? |

I've been watching a lot of mentally engaging movies lately. As The Great Owl and others have mentioned, sometimes you need a break. Anyone have a suggestion for an entertaining and easy to digest film that is available on Hulu (or Prime Instant)?

But I connected with Rififi more than any of them. My big connection is probably related to the strictly-personal aging parents thing in my own life; I was so touched by Tony le Stéphanois working to recover/maintain some bit of dignity as he aged. And that in a dark, noir environment, a setting I always enjoy. Which happened to be located in one of my favorite cities, Paris, as filmed by someone who apparently loved the city as much as I do. And in addition to all these strictly personal connections, the procedural aspect of the film is almost genre-defining. I'll readily admit that so much of my response is personal, like for Friends of Eddie Coyle, which has a similar main character. And interestingly enough, I really didn't like Topkapi, where Dassin recycles a lot of the elements that worked well in Rififi. Dassin lost some of his hook with me when he gave up Jean Servais and used Melina Mercouri, who never strikes me as sexy here despite the film relying on it. I'm glad she and Dassin were in love, but she mostly irritated me in the film and her come-on seemed a bit sad. Really liked Rififi on blu and can't wait for Night and the City to join it. Pity it's missing the BN sale by one stinkin' day. Time to start wishing for The Naked City. |

The Warriors is always a good choice. There is a nice version of it on Instant Prime.

This is anybody's last chance to talk me out the Three Colors trilogy.
Otherwise I shall take off the wrapping and watch it tonight. I'm not kidding...I'll do it! Let the blood of my bank account be on your hands. |

Nobody is going to talk you out of it because Kieslowski is one of the greatest filmmakers who ever graced this world.

And, more obscurely, I really like the theme from Tokyo Drifter, "Nagaremono Bushi." I know Criterion has better things to do, but it would be great if there was a way for them to make some of the more hard-to-find music from their films available. Like they could rip it off the soundtrack and make it available for download. I liked the performance of "Le Rififi" from that movie, but I couldn't find it to put on my movies playlist. |

All you have to do is check out a Blu-ray of a silent film versus a DVD of the same film. Now, there will be differences when it comes to restoration work, clean-up, the quality of the sources, etc. But you'll still be able to see how a good HD version will stack up against an SD one. Try The Thief of Bagdad (Cohen BD vs Kino DVD), Intolerance (Cohen BD vs Kino DVD), or Metropolis (Kino BD vs Kino DVD).
