Is Koyanisquatsi better than Baraka?
I've only seen that one.

I prefer it to Baraka, but Baraka has its good points. I actually prefer Baraka's trailer to the actual film, I think Lisa Gerrards music is used so well with the visuals - I wish they had fitted it better into the film. Saying that I haven't seen it in a while :P

I would list Koyaanisqatsi above all the other films in that style tbh. Also if you have patience check out Visitors - its a very hypnotic film from Reggio.

The quality of the bluray i got from America is stunning. Its also a film FULL of special effects but it is used so well those effects are pretty much invisible.

Also Samsara is another film worth checking out and its gorgeous - if you want to sell bluray to someone, show them this film. Chronos also has some very memorable moments and spectacular shots, oh and some very intense time lapse shots.

A new film that is in process of screening (I think) is 20-22 which is similar to the above but looks just as good.

You are correct - they were probably referring to

Koyaanisqatsi is currently my #1 favorite film of all time, and the one I'd call the best ever made. I've always found it powerful, moving, and thought-provoking, in addition to having spectacular filming and editing techniques. I believe it is an important film that everybody should see at some point.

I also love and value Baraka and Samsara for their own reasons. Baraka is a gorgeous exploration of places and cultures I know I'll never see in my lifetime. Samsara is kinda weird, but the more I see it, the more I can grasp its themes and thought processes. All of these movies are 5/5 in my book, and they all look phenomenal on Blu-Ray. Out of these though, I still give Koyaanisqatsi the edge for its music, innovation, and clarity.

Chronos and Powaqatsi are worth seeing too. I found Naqoyqatsi to be too gaudy and random.

I wish Criterion included the IRE version of Koyaanisqatsi, I prefer it to the widescreen as the imagery just works so much better and feels more balanced and is more balanced - I get why they stuck with the widescreen as that's was always his intention. But the IRE version is stunning plus in some scenes we lose so much information due to it being widescreen.

Have you seen Visitors? It's a very simple concept and is very subtle in what it sets out to achieve, but it works so well and is mesmerising.

I haven't, but it'll go straight to the top of my rental queue. It sounds very interesting.

EDIT:
Ah heck, I'll just blind-buy it.

NO, NO, NO! I've been waiting and listening for the UPS truck to bring me my copy of Night and the City ... I took this afternoon off so that I could watch it the moment it arrived ... and I've just learned that it's been delayed because UPS accidentally sent it to Kansas. Kansas! I receive packages almost daily, and this has to be the one out of hundreds that is mis-routed?

Well, there's nothing I can really do except to laugh about it. I'd cry and throw a fit, but I don't think that's going to solve the problem. (sigh) Ah, well, after all, tomorrow is another day ...

That's what I gathered from the reviews I've seen. Sounds like a lot of folks missed the point of the film; I'm sure if I go in with the right mindset, it'll be great.

Dressed to Kill Criterion

UPDATED E-mail response

Quote:
Hi,

I spoke too soon! Please find the updated statement about Criterion's DRESSED TO KILL release below and please let me know if you have any questions:

In our haste to respond to customer concerns about the anamorphic compression on our release of Dressed to Kill, we posted incorrectly that the change had been made at the behest of the director. Brian De Palma did ask for a change to the geometry of the scan, but it was to address the distortion he saw in the image, not to apply it. Unfortunately, that change was never carried over in the final product, and the resulting discs are wrong. Therefore, we are reauthoring discs without the squeeze and will make them available to all purchasers of our release of Dressed to Kill free of charge. Simply e-mail Jon Mulvaney (mulvaney@criterion.com) with your name, address, and some proof of purchase, such as a receipt, and we will send you a corrected copy. We regret the inconvenience, but we hope that in the end all of our customers will end up with a copy of Dressed to Kill that accurately reflects the film as well as the director’s intentions.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

All the best,
Jon Mulvaney

It's not only well designed, visually and artistically, but the story is very engaging from beginning to end and the 3 1/2 hours kind of flies by. I'd still choose Eyes Wide Shut by just a hair over Barry Lyndon though for overall entertainment value.
I absolutely love the look of the film, and the look is directly attributed to the lenses.

The lenses Kubrick used were commissioned by NASA and built by Zeiss. They were originally designed to shoot the dark side of the moon, which is why they have such giant apertures (f/0.7). The huge aperture also affects the depth of field, which is why much of Barry Lyndon has a slightly soft look to it.

...and since we're doing top 5s, I couldn't pass on my favorite director (tied with Sergio Leone):

1. Paths of Glory
2. Barry Lyndon (the top 2 swap places frequently, depending on my mood)
3. Dr. Strange love
4. 2001
5. The Killing

Sweet - good to hear thy have acknowledged the issues. Weird how most of the recent problems have been down to the director :P

Sometimes they aint that great! Like i Love who incredible Donnie Darko is, yet he felt the need to ruin it with a directors cut XD.

Oh my.
