I hate to add to the off topicness, but wow please do tell sir why you think Inarritu is a hack?? Amores Perros is a great first feature. 21 grams I thought was fabulous and birdman hey it's as artsy as you'll ever convince the oscars to ever pick for a best picture it was a refreshing win versus their usual "based on actual events" winning features...

"I guess nobody knew Jon Mulvaney like he did, like I did."
"How long ago?" "Back in school. I was never so lonesome in my life till he showed up." "When did you see him last?" "September, '39." "When the business started?" "Mmm, hmm." "See much of him before that?" "Once in a while. Best friend I ever had." "That sounds like a cheap novelette." "I write cheap novelettes." |

In my younger and more vulnerable years Jon Mulvaney gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since.
"Whenever you feel like criticizing any one," he told me, "just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had.” Last edited by mrjohnnyb; 08-07-2015 at 12:58 AM. |

I think La peau douce and Jules et Jim are much better films. I even prefer the middle films in the Antoine Doinel series (particularly Stolen Kisses and Bed and Board) to The 400 Blows. |

One story I heard about Jon Mulvaney, the story I believe, was from his days in Skokie, Illinois.
There was a gang of cinephiles that wanted their own art film website. They realized that to be in power, you didn't need guns or money or even dvds. You just needed the will to answer every email, no matter how stupid or asinine it was. After a while, they come into power and then they come after Mulvaney. He was small-time then, just posting a blog and working at Blockbuster Video they say. They come to his home in the afternoon, looking for his laptop. They find his wife and kids in the house and decide to wait for Mulvaney. He comes home to find his wife raped and children screaming. The cinephiles knew Mulvaney was tough, not to be trifled with, so they let him know they meant business. They tell him they want his domain name and all his business. Mulvaney looks over the faces of his family. Then he showed these men of will what will really was. He tells him he would rather see his family dead than live another day after this. He lets the last cinephile go, waits until his wife and kids are in the ground, and then he goes after the rest of the cinephiles. He kills their kids. He kills their wives. He kills their parents and their parents' friends. He burns down the houses they live in, the stores they work in. He kills people that owe them money. And like that, he's gone. Underground. Nobody's ever seen him since. He becomes a myth, a spook story that Criterion lovers tell their kids at night. "Scratch your pop's OOP copy of The Third Man and Jon Mulvaney will get you." ...but no one ever really believes. Last edited by Ray Jackson; 08-07-2015 at 01:18 AM. |

Buzzkill.
All jokes aside, Mulvaney is an interesting face of the franchise, especially this week during the Dressed to Kill controversy. It's probably not a fun week for the Criterion staffers to read that email address. Jokes are far more fun than how the conversation devolved yesterday. Maybe flames and trolls are more your speed. |

Jon Mulvaney is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I've ever known in my life.

Jon Mulvaney...christ...we're still talking about Jon Mulvaney.
When I was talking about Jon Mulvaney I wanted to talk about something else. And when I was talking about something else, all I could think about was Jon Mulvaney. I hardly said a word to my wife until I said yes to a divorce. ...she hated Jon Mulvaney. Last edited by Ray Jackson; 08-07-2015 at 03:43 AM. |

![]() I always pictured Mr. Mulvaney sitting at a desk overlooking the Chrysler building with a small Money Tree plant at his side, listening to Gershwin, with a poster of GlenGaryGlenRoss on his wall and a drawer full of Cuban cigars. He had a nasal voice, a bit high pitched, with a cleft chin, small moustache and pork chops on his face. He had a stack of yellow Manilla envelopes on the left side of his desk, preserved from the 1950s. On the right side of his desk was a 30 year old bottle of Laphroaig sent personally from actor Harrison Ford, who purchased the whiskey in a shop near a hotel not far from the Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport in Kansas City. Mulvaney, yes, a man with fine tastes in life with a secret fetish for dominatrixes and a known vice for gambling in Atlantic City. What a man! He climbed the ruins of Chichén Itzá back in 1973 but also partied with Laurence Olivier, Salvador Dali and Coco Chanel back in the 60s, in the south of France on an estate formerly owned by Charles de Gaulle. Oh yes, Mr. Mulvaney, a dashing gent of Rum Raisin and a twist of Cookies n' Cream, with a smidgen of salt and pecans on the side. |

Night and the City Blu-ray REVIEW
![]() Absolutely magnificent restoration and presentation from Criterion. The film looks stunning on Blu-ray. As far as American noir films are concerned, it is one of the very best that I have seen on the home video market (restoration and presentation). The restoration will remain the film's definitive presentation ![]() Hopefully, people managed to pick up the Blu-ray during the B&N sale. ![]() Pro-B |

Last night, I watched my Criterion Blu-ray of Zatoichi on the Road (1963).
This fifth film in the Zatoichi series features my favorite kill sequence of the series today. I will not spoil it for the uninitiated, except to say that it involves a dragonfly. People who have seen the movie know exactly what I'm talking about. I continue to be impressed by the work of Shintarô Katsu as the title character. He displays the perfect combination of emotional vulnerability, loneliness, and inner toughness. Onward to Zatoichi and the Chest of Gold... On another Criterion note, I'm pleased to read Pro-B's favorable review of Night and the City. When I watched the Blu-ray last weekend, I thought that it was one of Criterion's best transfers of a black-and-white film, so I'm glad that I was not jumping the gun with giving it a five-star User Review. It's my favorite Criterion release of the year. |
