We talked about Black Girl on the cast and someone informed us that it's restored by WCF, so I'm betting that's the case for A Touch of Zen.

I'm hoping this means a WCF Volume 2 is in the near future. Black Girl is essential for African cinema and this would probably mean A Brighter Summer Day will finally come out.

I almost missed this. Thank you! Yeah, we just made the episode we would want to hear, and we're getting amazing feedback from our fellow Criterion geeks. Major shout out to iScottie too. He deserves a lot of the credit.

I saw the Criterion Blu-rays and DVDs of Dressed to Kill on sale at Movie Stop the other day. I collected them, took all of them up front to the clerk at the front register, and told her about Criterion's recall of the discs. I informed her that she could look up the information to verify it, and I also told her about the replacement discs, just in case anyone had already bought a copy. She thanked me profusely, and she took them into the back office.

I'm not liking the black crush in Blind Chance:

Why are lots of 4K remasters turning out like this? A similar scenario as the 'Sony Black Crush' problem we were having recently?

OK, Criterion movie art fans or film art fans in general, I am posting this for you.

Today Dark Hall Mansion had a sale on their inventory. Buy a print at 25% off and be the first to pre-order a new work by artist Laurent Durieux from DHM's Seminal Film Series. The new Durieux will be officially released to the public this coming Friday. All releases in this ongoing limited edition series are for classic films. Previous movie prints in this series have included Durieux's take on Metropolis and Lon Chaney's Phantom of the Opera (both of which I own).

The gimmick was that the actual Durieux print (and subject film) to be released this Friday was unknown during the sale, remaining a mystery to be revealed later this evening after the sale was over. Pre-ordering this was the art equivalent of a blind buy......with the understanding that anyone who did not like it after the reveal could cancel their pre-order.

It turns out the mystery print is a popular Criterion title.

I am not sure which of the two versions I prefer. I ordered both but will keep only one:

Regular

[Show spoiler]

Variant

For the record, it is in Mandarin, correct? Their Mandarin section on the shelves was empty.

Also looked for Harakiri... no luck with that title either.
Yi is a common search name which will expand results. Libraries by default tend to pull all results that include any of the search terms and in all formats. Sometimes you can narrow results by a type of format; book, music, dvd. Most libraries also let you search by author, which in a DVD would default to director and a few leading actors. You might try searching by Yang, Dechang instead and if no results try Yang, Edward. This might be too restrictive but I'd be surprised if it returns more than a couple results. Most libraries don't carry much in Chinese titles. Spanish, Korean and Russian titles are growing. Since so many libraries have adopted Criterion titles as permanent parts of their collections, it's the norm to have more French language DVDs than books. Searching for Criterion would bring results but could give you too many titles to sort through.

I don't have any answers, but I do want to offer you a very sincere and heartfelt Thanks. "Black crush" is one of the terms that I have never truly misunderstood, and that I was hoping pro-bassoonist would address this week. Now I get it.

More education, please! You'd be safe in supposing that I'm unfamiliar with many of the technical terms pertaining to transfers and masters!

Those are SWEET.

How much do they go for?

I already have a Metropolis poster framed, but that Durieux version ten times cooler.

...has he done Blade Runner?

Watch The Friends of Eddie Coyle for the best example of black crush.

...I'm going to try to hunt down one of his Blade Runner prints.
These go on sale to the public at 9:30 am PST on Friday, August 28 here:

http://darkhallmansionstore.com/

Also, you can find information here, including close-up captures of the details on these Godzilla prints (that is a Japanese man with a lantern on the lower right): https://www.facebook.com/pages/Dark-...12394752134162

These will not appear in their store until 9:30 am PST, so it is much like SAE with Twilight Time titles. Cost for these will be $65 for the Regular and $100 for the Variant. These are serigraphs of high quality and not cheap posters. I own several Durieux's and love his take on different films. All of them are stunning to see in person.

In my experience, Durieux's prints are extremely popular and the fact they are limited means they tend to sell out quickly. If anyone wants one, go to the DHM store site and set up your account before Friday. Save your CC card or link to your PayPal account ahead of time. The Regular Godzilla had a run of 280 and a bunch got pre-ordered today. The Variant has a smaller run (don't recall how many).

At least DHM is not Mondo. I have come to loathe Mondo because ebay scalpers are all over their popular releases like ants on a sugar cone. Mondo released a beautiful serigraph print a few weeks ago for Creature From the Black Lagoon that sold out an entire run of a couple hundred in minutes. Within a half hour, dozens were up on ebay for three or four times their original cost.

I had no idea what black crush was either, so I'm also much obliged to sjconstable. I don't know all of the terms used on this forum, and this was quite helpful.

Trick is not to buy on ebay. I follow a thread on another website that alerts upcoming releases, when and where to order them, etc. If I see one I want, I try to get it when released. The scalpers jack these Durieux's up to ridiculous prices. See my post above. Yeah, still not cheap at $65, but these frequently sell (and get bought) on ebay for hundreds.

Just watched Touch of Zen for the first time. Amazing film. King Hu was a rare talent in that genre. His films were artful, atmospheric, poetic. It really doesn't get much better than those 3 films he made consecutively. The restoration trailer and 10 year old DVDs or this film are so different it's shocking. Can't wait for a Blu ray.

I plan to only keep one of the prints shown above under the spoiler tags. I should just play the game and put the other up on ebay, but I don't feel cool doing that knowing I could just email DHM which one I don't want and let them sell it Friday. Hopefully, a non-scalper will buy it and be grateful to get it.

I would appreciate opinions on which one people prefer. PM me if you want to keep it out of the thread, although given the fake covers and other stuff I have seen posted here in the past year, this isn't out of bounds for discussion. Change of pace, maybe? I love movie art especially when it is for a Criterion film. I am leaning toward keeping the Variant, but man do I love the deep red glows and sky on the Regular. I have to let DHM know by tomorrow night if I decide not to keep one; the money back guarantee expires in 24 hrs.

FYI, Laurent Durieux, the Belgian artist for these Godzilla prints, is the one who did the spectacular cover art for Criterion's Things to Come. That is how I discovered him.
