We need to get Kate Bosworth and Michelle Rodriguez, though. Otherwise, it's off!

I think now Black crush has a more general meaning of anything so dark that different shades of black are unnoticeable in the pixels affected.

Maybe someone can chime in with a better explanation here.
I think you are right, basically Black crush or Crushed blacks is what you explain in your second point, the first is just one way to reproduce the problem, it can also happen when your brightness is set too low.

You might try searching by Yang, Dechang instead and if no results try Yang, Edward. This might be too restrictive but I'd be surprised if it returns more than a couple results. Most libraries don't carry much in Chinese titles. Spanish, Korean and Russian titles are growing. Since so many libraries have adopted Criterion titles as permanent parts of their collections, it's the norm to have more French language DVDs than books. Searching for Criterion would bring results but could give you too many titles to sort through.
Thanks for the response and for the tips. I might just see if I can pick it up at a decent price. If I don’t want to keep it, I’ll unload it somewhere. This way, I’ll be able to see it on Blu-ray instead of DVD. Even though time doesn’t seem to permit me the pleasure of watching all of these great Asian films I’ve been hearing about recently, I still have the Asian cinema bug and I’m very much looking forward to seeing stuff like Yi Yi, more Ozu, Harakiri, and something from Hou Hsiao-Hsien. It certainly is a pity that some of these directors have nice reputations and yet there films are difficult to come by.

I'm a big fan of Asian cinema. Really would love to see Criterion release a lot more. Highly recommend Samurai Trilogy, Sword of Doom, Pale Flower and Gate of Hell . All Kurosawa's films. Also on a 2nd level Kuroneko, Tokyo Drifter & Branded to Kill.

I say 2nd level simply because these movies aren't universally praised on this site. Especially Seijun Suzukis films which are quire different then your average movie. My enjoyment of Branded to Kill is obvious by my Avatar. Pale Flower also seems to split people. I think its one of the best in the collection, but others found it boring.

Should also mention Chungking Express for a more modern (90's) film. And Life of Oharu and the Ozu movies, though I find Ozu's movies rather cold personally. **Don't hurt me!**

Once you see Harakiri you will probably want to pick up Kobayashi's Kwaiden when it releases. I can't wait for it.

**edit** also a title I've never seen discussed here Ballad of Narayama. Simply amazing film. The vivid colors and the way the whole thing is orchestrated like a Kabuki theater show with set pieces parting as the camera moves into another scene. Very inventive stuff filled with haunting melodies and great acting. I watch this one over and over. Though the final scene escapes me.

If you haven't already seen it be sure to check out Imamura's Ballad of Narayama as well. I find it to be the better film, though I think both of them are great pieces of work

That bird's hair looks a lot like Rita Hayworth's hair.

Gilda, perhaps?

I was thinking Rita Hayworth too. Gilda would be ... OMG, that would be magnificent!

They are saying Red Beard / Red Bird at Criterion Forum. Not sure I see it.

I'm thinking "red hair" + "bird in a gilded cage" = Gilda, but that may be stretching it.

There's no actual cage in the drawing, but that's a common phrase.

Robin = Bird + look at Uma's hair + beak at angle = Batman's ears (+ Uma's mask is pointy like a beak, and Arnold's hat is too.)

Solved.

Some of their recent ones were similar in nature, so probably that's it.

Someone on Twitter said Red Wig (Hedwig) on a Hungry Finch (Angry Inch).

Somewhat of a reach but makes sense with their puns lately.
