I don't know of a way to search by release date. The spine numbers are pretty much in order for DVD releases, but now they have blu-ray releases of older titles. Spine numbers are not necessarily chronological by release date anymore.

I have a spreadsheet of all Criterion titles including out-of-print titles if you are interested. You can PM me your email and I can shoot it to you.

Criterion usually makes an announcement on their webpage. Here's an example from a couple of years ago:

I've never seen the Woodstock film. I'll add my voice to those praising Monterey Pop, though. I really need to upgrade my DVD set for BD, but other things keep taking priority.

Yes, that's nice. However, it only goes back to 2006 and you have to click on each month for each year to check that way. The Criterion forum looks to be more comprehensive. But is nice to have different ways to check. Thanks to all.

the ones from 2006 are/were the first Criterion blu-rays.. everything is listed on this site, but yeah... a lot of clicking necessary.

EDIT: first CC Blu-rays were in 2008

While this is not as comprehensive as there are two or three releases which don't have a review yet, I always use this one via the search feature on this site:

Also, if you put the main film, the two shorts and all the outtakes together you get just as much footage as Woodstock!
I've never seen Monterey Pop.

But the lineup seems very similar to the Woodstock lineup.

I like Woodstock because of the sprawling nature of it.

Part concert footage...part 60s counterculture documentary.

Woodstock is a lot better than Monterey Pop. That being said, Hendrix's performance at Monterey Pop is without a doubt his greatest. His Woodstock performance gets all the glory but Monterey made him in America and Only Queen's Live Aid performance and Bruce Springsteen's Vietnam Veterans show are better. Hendrix at Monterey was a game changer just like Dylan at Newport.

I just preordered Kwaidan, Ikiru, and Breaker Morant. All blind buys, but I know I'll love 'em . Especially excited for the visuals in Kwaidan...

How about Gimme Shelter? The Maysles made an amazing document of the Rolling Stones there. This is an amazing Criterion release through and through...totally riveting from start to finish about how the Altamont show went down in flames. I mean, owning this along with Monterey Pop is an amazing double feature of classic rock documentaries.

Let's not forget about The Who, who were pretty stunning smashing those guitars on stage at Monterey...but of course Jimi stole the show in the end....aside from Ravi of course.

Why do you Woodstock is better?

Are you referring strictly to the musical performances or to the film itself?

I like Monterey Pop the best. There is a LOT of value in the two disc Criterion set. Lots of music, lots of outtakes and performances not included in the main film. Outstanding music and entertainment, especially from one of my favorite musicians of all time Jimi Hendrix, who proceeds to introduce himself to the West Coast with a historic set of blazing guitar work (literally). The look on the face of Mama Cass is worth the price of admission. Lots of other great acts, like The Mamas and Papas, Otis Redding, Big Brother and the Holding Company (with Janis Joplin), and Jefferson Airplane.

I kind of look at these three concerts as a reflection on the late 1960s, a time capsule captured through music performances that bookend a two and a half year period.

Monterey Pop Festival (June 1967) - happy, everyone is cool and everything is groovy, life is good, make love not war, drug use, great music.

Woodstock (August 1969) - grittier, dirtier, huge crowds, heavy drug use, rain delays, mud, happy people, great music, Jimi Hendrix at his peak, unhappy town of Bethel, mass gathering laws passed designed to prevent a repeat. Peaceful event celebrating music and youth culture, but dark clouds (and not just rain) are gathering.

Altamont (December 1969) - a one-day concert immortalized in the film Gimme Shelter, massive crowds, heavy drugs and boozing, members of the Hell's Angels attempting crowd control, great bands sometimes interrupted by unruly fans, an infamous murder caught on film, what starts out as a mostly peaceful concert degenerates into agitated crowds, aggressive bikers, fights, and general mayhem as things just go to hell. Whether a fair assessment or not, Altamont was contrasted with the peaceful atmosphere of Woodstock just a hew months earlier and sent off the decade like a boot stomping the happy innocence out of 1960s youth culture.

Very interesting post sir.

What are these mass gathering laws you speak of?

Despite not being Criterion related, I sometimes ask questions about potential bluray releases, as there are a number of knowledgeable people about such things on this thread:

- Is there any potential news or ideas for a bluray release of The Thin Man series (or at least the first one?) There's a DVD box set that has gotten decent enough reviews but obviously bluray would be great.

- Same question, but for Howard Hawks' great screwball comedies 'Bringing Up Baby' and 'His Girl Friday'. It seems utterly crazy that neither of these are on bluray! Is there a reason for it, or just one of those things?

Talking about potential releases, does anybody know if Two for the Road is still a possibility? or does the car with two people in the new year drawing turned to be something else?

Don't want to buy the MoC only to get an announcement from CC, since I think there is still room for improvement in the PQ.
