I'm trying to hold off on buying Mulholland Dr. but it's slowly eating away at me. I've been waiting for the bluray for years now.

This was shot on SD video, correct? Would it really benefit that much on a blu-ray?

Yeah, those are region-free, the transfers look great, and we'll probably be waiting another decade (if ever) for Inland Empire and Lost Highway on Blu in the USA. And, less than $10.00 per disc.

Woodstock is the better film. Although... I prefer the original theatrical cut way more versus the expanded version that's available on blu-ray. Also, I only really watched the blu-ray once a while back, never quite got around to the extras (...one of these days). Prior to that my only full viewings of Woodstock was a couple times in a row at a state of the art movie theater when it was first released, on a big honking screen with a pretty kick-ass sound system - impossible to duplicate in a home theater.

Monterey Pop is a great package, and it's a pretty good documentary as well. The supplements were pretty decent, to say the least.

If you like the music, check them out. I prefer the late late 60s music a la Woodstock to the not quite so late 60s music of Monterey Pop, but it's nothing to sneeze at either.

I just finished watching PTA's Boogie Nights (a wonderful film that would fit incredibly well within the Collection; PTA should definitely be in the Collection somewhere), and I instantly noticed how great the soundtrack is. And then I thought about the other Anderson in the collection, Wes, and realized that he also chooses great music for his films. Maybe it's just an Anderson thing, but both Paul and Wes clearly have great taste and music, and are two of the best filmmakers around these days.

For me, the performances by Otis Redding and Jimi Hendrix and all of the extras make the Criterion box set worth it on their own, and Canned Heat, CSNY, Sly & The Family Stone, and, of course, Jimi Hendrix again make Woodstock a must-own as well (btw, Wal-Mart currently has the 3-disc 40th anniversary edition with a free digital copy in their $7.88 bin.)

I should mention that Monterey seems to have better source material, so the A/V is a bit nicer, but it is more than adequate on the Woodstock release.

If you are region free, the Classic Bergman set is at 72% off on Amazon.co.uk at the moment. Five Bergman films I haven't seen! Extremely excited to get the set.

Has anyone had experience with contacting Criterion and asking for replacement materials, like inserts and/or cases? How long does it take someone to respond to you? I received the blu-ray pictured below and wrote asking if I could possibly purchase a new case and insert, and have received no response to date. Thanks for any insights or suggestions.

I e-mailed our boy "Jon Mulvaney" about a replacement for the "Carlos" packaging because the digipak I purchased from B&N was damaged. They got back to me a day or two later and said it would be $10 through Paypal. I sent the Criterion store $10 through Paypal and a new "Carlos" digipak arrived about a week later. That's my only experience.

I'm really torn. *sigh*

I just assumed that Hiroshima mon amour would be the Release of the Year. I mean, come on. It's amazing. Great booklet, excellent extras. Just a beautiful release. And I finally got to see one of my favorite films in beautiful HD.

Then, however, I got Two Days, One Night. Damn! It's a fantastic film, just draining and emotionally a punch in the stomach. And they add on a ton of extras, too. Now, I'm not in any way saying this is as good as a film as Hrioshima mon amour. As good as I think it is -- and I think it's amazing -- I don't think it's that good.

But wow. It's early on, only September, and what's the release of the year? For me, it's one of these two. And I can't decide.

Of course, Mulholland Drive is coming, so why even bother I guess? But still.

They've said at one of the Wexner Center Q&As that regular TV shows -- especially long-running ones (like Alfred Hitchcock Presents) -- isn't in the cards.

They've done TV before, though. Altman & Trudeau's Tanner '88 and Fassbinder's Berlin Alexanderplatz on DVD. And on laserdisc before that, they even had a "Criterion Television" sub-imprint, with five releases, three of which were the original set of Tanner '88, and the other two being "samplers" of episodes and extras for I Love Lucy and The Addams Family.

And by the by, there's nothing "un-legit" about Fanny and Alexander.

Fishing with John is totally SD. It was made way before "HD" was even a real term. But nevertheless, I'll bet an improved edition can be made. I mean, just look at Hoop Dreams, which was also shot in analog Beta SP videotape, and it was just released in blu-ray. I'd love to see an upgrade and maybe a new retrospective 20 minute documentary featuring John Lurie, Tom Waits and Jim Jarmusch (unfortunately Dennis Hopper is not with us any longer). 2017 will mark its 25th anniversary, so maybe by then it will happen.

There was absolutely marvelous cinematography in this 6 part "TV series". Director of Photography Michael Spiller, who often works with Hal Hartley, was part of that.

Release of the Year has to be The Apu Trilogy. Nothing else comes close. This is not my choice for favorite release, not by a long shot. But that doesn't matter. The Apu Trilogy being restored and making it to Blu-ray is monumental, an epic years-long achievement of film preservation and restoration that has to rank among the finest efforts in cinema history.

Other three? Slacker and Dazed & Confused. That's two. Boyhood and the Before trilogy haven't come out yet.
