Psycho is my personal favorite horror movie of all time. There's nothing supernatural in the film, but I do not feel that a horror movie has to have supernatural elements. A horror movie simply has to horrify me.
I'll go ahead and rock out with my top five horror films of all time... 1. Psycho (1960) 2. Alien (1979) 3. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) 4. The Shining (1980) 5. Jaws (1975) Ridley Scott's Alien is probably the closest that cinema has come to capturing the spirit of H.P. Lovecraft, in that it depicts a group of people who find an unspeakably terrifying entity that probably only scratches the surface when it comes to the unknown horrors that exist somewhere out there in the universe. It's a tremendous horror movie, as such. I could have just as easily put the 1956 Don Siegel version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers on my above list, because I actually like it just as much as the 1978 version, but the 1978 version takes the edge when it comes to the visceral horror and the atmospherics. Jaws is magnificent in terms of Spielberg's way of generating suspense. The shark is represented by a girl being pulled under the water, a bloody raft, a dragged tire from a dock, floating harpoon barrels, and such, but, when the big reveal comes late in the film, it matches and even exceeds our expectations. The Shining...need I say more? This one is pretty self-explanatory, but Kubrick's ability to use brightly-lit settings to generate scares is amazing. What would say Antichrist is then :P? No real supernatural elements, but it does certainly fill the criteria for a horror :P

However, I've always thought of it as a horror film because it has been labeled that way. In fact I'm trying to justify why it is a horror film, but by my definition it would be a physiological thriller. |

Although I prefer the 1950's Body Snatchers version. Only "Oldboy" gets me to cover my eyes -- the dental work scene. But I wouldn't classify it a horror movie just because I don't want to see that scene.

Its bugs me because horror film never affect me - I adore them and its one of my fave genres, but it annoys me I never feel the fear and anxiety that others get when they watch them lol
It's so frustrating >.< I want to be terrified - its weird though because if I was playing a horror game I would be tense, worries, anxious etc etc but films have no affect on me on that level ![]() |

The best horror films for me are always when there are other genres mixed in. As for me the only parts where I need to close my eyes is when there is any kind of real Animal cruelty on the screen, Walkabout comes to my mind. Last edited by pedromvu; 09-11-2015 at 08:01 PM. |

I will add with some films like Sinister, I did find the home made film featured in the film quite terrifying and haunting - but the rest of the film was a huge mess and ruined it. I do try films before I give my opinion but some films like Insidious just put me to sleep and thats a rare thing to happen to me lol, its just corny and dare I say, lame. I can't think of any recent horrors that have affected me at all, or been suck in my head. I am excited to try The Witch, heard great things and look great. Not sure why its so hard for filmmakers to make decent horrors nowadays, there have been so many successful horrors so no idea why this genre is becoming so poor. No film (well horror) has affected me like Antichrist though, the dread and doom I feel when watching and discussing it, even listening to the beautiful Lascia chi's ping feels me with dread. Its such an emotional and powerful film yet so beautiful. One worth mentioning though is A Tale of Two Sisters - INCREDIBLE film, and as you said it isn't just a horror it has so many layers and other genres tied into it. Same can be said for Oldboy and I Saw the Devil I guess! Oh I forgot to mention Begotten! - now that is a horrifying film. Gah now I started I can't stop, Tetsuo is another great one lol (stop me now please@!!) Gotta love 144p! And this definitely isn't a horror but some of the scenes are pretty eery and creepy! and ![]() Last edited by Polaroid; 09-11-2015 at 08:11 PM. |
