And after watching It Follows, my girlfriend and I were inspired to purchase The Entity, partly because Scorsese lists it as one of his favorite horror movies. It is fantastic as well, and the bare-bones blu ray disc is underrated.
Not only do I agree with your thoughts about It Follows, but I was also inspired in turn to pull the trigger on The Entity, since I've always wanted to see that movie, and because I had somehow forgotten that it's available on Blu-ray. I had a few other choice 80s flicks that I was buying in one batch from Amazon (Beverly Hills Cop, Dead Poets Society, Blue Velvet), and The Entity, which is on sale for $11 and change, was just what I needed to get all of them for free shipping.

I've always liked The Princess Bride in a casual, laid-back sort of way, and it hits the sweet spot sometimes when I'm looking for a fun 1980s flick. I bought the Blu-ray a year or two ago, when I saw it on sale for five dollars at Target or somewhere and felt the need to upgrade my old DVD, but I still have not made my way to watching the Blu-ray yet. It's one of those films, like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, that I like having in my collection, but that I do not feel a need to watch often, because I have "overexposure hangover" from having seen the movie a great many times with friends several years ago and from having quoted the movie and heard it quoted time and time again. I figure that, when I'm 80 or so, I'll treasure revisiting such movies and enjoying the associated memories.

I'm a big fan of The Princess Bride and would welcome a really good, special release from somewhere. Just not Criterion. I can see the argument for some films that are closer to the mainstream, even The Big Chill and The Rose, but Bride being on Criterion is just inconceivable. I can understand why they are having a tough time with supplements, because their usual type of academic angle just doesn't work for the film. It's pure comedy, joyful escapism.

The first time I saw it, I really like it a lot. But I rewatched it a month ago and I was waiting for it to be over.

I have seen that blu-ray and while it doesn't look that great, it didn't bother me that much, it is an amazing film though, you should check it out, it even has some interesting interviews with English subtitles.

If you check avsforums, I believe someone mentioned the theatrical print suffers the same issue, and the Japanese blu-ray looks the same.

Only others I have seen are Still Walking and Like Father, Like Son and they have all been great, Criterion should get their hands on more of his films.

Criterion is working on The In-Laws???

That is some seriously good news.

(It also makes me think my The Ghost and Mr. Chicken campaign might not be as stupid as even I think it is)

The Princess Bride is delightful. It's sentimental without being overly sappy, it pokes fun at the genre without being smarmy everybody in it is really, really good.

Do I want a Criterion release? Not particularly but it's an absolutely fantastic film.

Fantastic film. I got to see it in theaters, fortunately. Haven't seen the blu yet.

http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/00987/...cess-Bride-The

Don't know why it doesn't have the Special Features listed.
I had forgotten about the Laser Disc, but a lot of what they released then doesn't fit with their niche now.

That said, I found the special features and they aren't shabby. So I humbly take back what I said a few posts above. ^^^

Disc One (DVD-5):
-Letterboxed widescreen capture
-Original Stereo Soundtrack
-Audio commentary by Rob Reiner, William Goldman,
Andrew Scheinman, Billy Crystal, and Peter Falk
-Rob Reiner reads excerpts from William Goldman's
novel The Princess Bride

Disc Two (DVD-5):

-Behind the scenes footage:
-On the high seas
-Fezzik, Vizzini, and Buttercup
-Westley and Fezzik
-Miracle Max's hut
-Buttercup, the King, and the Queen
-Rob Reiner's production scrapbook
-Norman Garwood's production sketches
-William Goldman's tapestry
-"Morton and Hayes": Excerpt
-DVD-ROM extras*

No idea why Laserdisc doesn't count because it was in fact Criterion who started the bonus content on the format. Especially with KING KONG (1933) with the very first ever commentary in the mid-1980's.
What does any of this have to do with anything I said?

I own the existing Blu-ray of Road House, and I love the movie.

Road House will never be released by Criterion.

If, however, Road House ever is released by Criterion, then I will double-dip the hell out of it.

Actual honest-to-goodness Criterion-related aside:
Ben Gazzara, who plays the awesomely villainous Brad Wesley in Road House, has a notable role in Anatomy of a Murder, which is available on Criterion Blu-ray.
In fact, it's not a stretch to imagine that Gazzara's character in Road House is the same person as his character in Anatomy of a Murder, except older and meaner.

Every month when its Criterion-release-announcement time I wait for Kieslowski's The Dekalog to be announced, based on an offhand comment made by someone involved in Criterion an interview (I think) several years ago.

Which means every month I set myself up for disappointment haha.

On The Princess Bride situation, as cool as that would be, the current non-Criterion release is great (enough for me at least), and Criterion's real strength lies in creating access to films otherwise lost to history or obscurity, or condemned to subpar studio releases, so I would prefer as many releases per month that counter that.

My December guesses:

Lady Snowblood double feature
Inside Llewyn Davis
Le Samourai
After Hours (if thats what the clock is)

Speaking of Le Samourai, has anyone here rented their HD version off of itunes? Curious as to how it looks, been tempted to just rent it myself but thought I'd ask.

Hunh. I don't think they've changed a bit regarding what they choose to have in the Collection. If they have fewer "mainstream" titles now, it's solely due to rights issues. At a quick glance, almost 20 of their first 100 LD releases were of films currently owned by Warner. If I find the time, I'll have to try to see what percentage of their LD titles are currently in print in their BD/DVD catalog. Based on a quick scan, I'd say it's well over half, possibly as much as 70-80%.

I could be mistaken, but isn't Gazzara also in The Killing of a Chinese Bookie?
