Just wanted to ask something:
I have never pre-ordered anything from amazon.
(generally I don't do pre-orders. I only have pre-ordered a couple of limited TT editions from SAE).

I pre-ordered Room with a View.
Is this expected to ship on day of release, or earlier?

Well, it depends on which shipping speed you chose. If it was Two-Day shipping, then it usually arrives on the release date (for instance, I should be getting Moonrise Kingdom today, the release date, because I had Amazon Prime and that comes with free Two-Day Shipping). For any of the other shipping speeds, it'll probably ship on that day but you won't see it for a few days (whatever the range is for that specific shipping speed).

I also pre-ordered A Room with a View; I chose Two-Day shipping, so I should get it next Tuesday on the release date.

What kind of shipping did you pick? It should arrive to you on release day.

I chose the cheapest shipping method and I also live in Greece.
So, it may take 2-4 weeks to arrive here from the moment it ships.
I just wasn't sure if it ships on release day or maybe a week before.

Anyone else been to the UCLA Film Archive? Yay / nay? When I was a student at UC Berkeley, I went to their film archives pretty often and really loved it.
I've never been there, but I will say that if you do get the opportunity to see Night of the Hunter on the big screen in 35mm, go for it. I caught it at MOMI last summer and was floored. Its expressionistic imagery and over the top acting finally clicked with me on the big screen.

Speaking of classic movies on the big screen, I'm going to see a theater showing of Dracula (1931) on October 25.

The Spanish version of Dracula, which was filmed concurrently with the English language version on the same movie sets, is featured as the second film on the double bill. In many ways, the Spanish version is a superior production, since the filmmakers were able to improve on the camera angles and such after observing the dailies of the English version scenes, but I've always preferred Bela Lugosi's iconic acting in the English version.

It goes without saying that I'm really looking forward to this night at the movies.

Watching Dracula someone can understand the power of film music (since it doesn't have any - I'm not talking about the Glass re-score of course).

That should be a blast! I've seen the English-language Dracula on the big screen several times, and it's loads of fun. I especially enjoyed hearing Dwight Frye's maniacal laugh echoing throughout the theatre.

But to also get to see the Spanish-language version! Now that would be a treat! I've only seen it on home video, and I agree with your assessment of it: technically, it's superior to its English-language counterpart, but Carlos Villareal just isn't in the same league as Lugosi.

I have three other versions of Bram Stoker's classic on order right now: the 1974 Dan Curtis production, which I've never seen; the 1979 theatrical remake featuring Laurence Olivier's impossibly hammy interpretation of Van Helsing; and the upcoming 4K remaster of Coppola's opulent and stylish re-imagining (which I personally think is an outstanding film).

Has anyone ever seen a sale on the Criterion cover art book? I would like to have this to display with my collection, but I would like to find it for less than $68 on Amazon or $80 on Criterion's site.

I quit my job and I am moving! AND the city I will move to has an indy cinema! (Lincoln has NONE!)

Can't wait to start fresh and will be a better paid job so can get back into properly collecting Criterions

Criterions have seemed so expensive lately for me in UK and not sure why the prices have shot up? Focused don MoC and Arrow as they are so much cheaper and have had sales plus Arrow has some very fun films worth checking out

Got such a back log though to catch up on - however I feel a little disappointed with Criterion, just the lack of booklets and such, I have lost some of that excitement when receiving Criterions, especially miss the digipaks.

I dunno I know the films presentation is the key focus and they are still doing they best on that level but for me Criterion is the entire package.

They have announced some awesome film so far though

I know this does help at all but its really worth the price! Its an amazing book and very high quality.

I wish they included more artworks though but I guess they had to limit it, here's hoping we get another book!

Thanks. Maybe I'll go ahead and put this on the Christmas wishlist. I've already been asked for gift ideas from the family. I'm one of those difficult people to find gifts for and everyone dreads drawing my name.

And...congrats on the move.

I think it was briefly around $42 for an Amazon pre order but that doesn't help you much now. It's $74 at bn.com and they periodically have 20% off coupons which would get it below $60 for you.

There currently is a 20% off coupon for online only (I hardly receive emails with a member coupon, so I called in and got an online coupon, which can be used endlessly until November 1st, I believe). Feel free to message me if anyone would like.

EDIT: And if this offering is not allowed, then please let me know immediately; I don't want to break any rules or anything.

The best version I've seen is the one I approached with the least expectations-Count Dracula. A 1977 release that was shown on PBS in three parts eons ago. Just the fact that Louie Jourdan was playing the title role was enough for me to pre-judge the thing as a disaster. At the time, my familiarity with Mr. Jourdan consisted of his being a pitchman for floral arrangements from FTD. It didn't take long for me to be so wrong that I'd have been willing to eat one of those arrangements as an apology to Mr. Jourdan. He IS the Count. Plus, the mini-series running time allows for more of the novel to be included. It's great. It's available on DVD for under $10.

I agree. It's my choice for best screen version of Stoker's novel. I had no prejudices against Louis Jourdan at the time I first saw it -- the original PBS airing, which I still think I have on Betamax somewhere -- as I wasn't familiar with him other than his role in Gigi.

Unfortunately, it's unlikely to ever get released on Blu-ray, given that it was shot on a mixture of 16mm film and PAL video.

I'm a Count Chocula fan, myself, and also a fan of Louis Jourdan from Letter From an Unknown Woman. That'd be pretty cool as a Criterion release being that the Olive release is barebones w/ no subtitles.

(sigh) I now have four versions of Stoker's classic tale on order!

But seriously, Hoyt, thank you so much for pointing out that the BBC version is available on DVD. It's been years since I've read anything about it, and I had all but forgotten it existed. This will be a treat since I've never seen it before. I tip my hat to you.

Of all the classic monsters (Dracula, the Frankenstein monster, the Mummy, the Wolf Man, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Invisible Man, the Fly, the Golem, etc.), Dracula was the one that frightened me the most and was consequently my favorite. The 1931 film and Edgar G. Ulmer's The Black Cat are my two favorite horror films from the 1930's.
