Really that seems to be the norm with RegionA Bluray releases that aren't Criterion or a few other minor labels. It kills me when a label with only a few employee's releases a minor movie with extra's and the big companies can't be bothered with it. IMO a nice overall package with booklets, extras and just going the extra mile will sell better then a barebones release in a eco case.

Agree with the earlier comment of Fear and Loathing DVD. Beautiful release.

I'm following the logical Criterion collector's progression:
1. Buy the essential Criterion titles
2. B&N sale? I'll get a few.
3. 150 titles isn't that many. I'll get everything except the OOPs. I'm not paying that much for Third Man!
4. Ok...I'll get all the blu-rays. But, no DVDs!!
5. ...unless the DVDs are bargains on eBay...or they're essential.
6. Forget it! I'm going for all of them!

I'm in between steps 5 and 6.

Having an older receiver, it fills in the gaps quite nicely. (Oppo is chump change compared to what that receiver cost. But in turn I get my lossless HD audio, and 1080p/24 done right, and even 3D every once in a while, none of which that receiver can do without help or at all. There were very few, if any, alternative blu-ray players that might have got all three of those things right for my situation, so it was mostly a no-brainer to go with what I already knew did work.)

I finally had some time to put a fairly significant dent in my unwatched pile, thanks to a bout of bronchitis. Over the past three days, I've gotten through Orpheus, Walkabout, Thief, and Jubal, and rewatched The Fisher King, Herzog's Nosferatu, and Days of Heaven. By the way, thanks to whoever suggested Jubal. The photography/color was amazing (especially on the promethazine and codeine cough syrup I was prescribed; that stuff is ridiculous), and Rod Steiger's performance was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting him and his New York accent to seem at least somewhat miscast, but he affected a great Cajun accent, and wasn't out of place at all in his incarnation of Iago. Oh, and I would bring Valerie French wood any time she asked

And now I'm off to a screening of Night and the City at the KC Alamo Drafthouse

edit: Had a blast at the screening. Your girl looked great on the big screen, jm

anyone here fans of Andrey Tarkovsky's Nostalghia?

It is streaming on Netflix right now along with Tarkovsky’s last film, The Sacrifice. I started it the other night with the intention of getting a feel for what the film is like. I thought that maybe the film would perhaps be too impenetrable, but I was curious.

I think some of the points that Casey Broadwater, who reviewed Kino’s Blu-ray release of the film on this site, are spot on. He says about Tarkovsky’s filmography, “(his) films constitute a dense body of visual poetry that must be felt far before it can be articulated in words.” I think that is the key to this film, which is difficult, challenging, vague, but also quite beautiful. I’m fairly certain that I cannot describe in words what the meaning of the film is or what some of the symbolism represents. Scanning through what others have to say about it, I read two entirely different, yet both quite convincing, explanations of a key scene in the film. That reinforced the idea of what Casey says in his review.

See the film. Give yourself to it and let it mean whatever you feel it means. I can't say "I really enjoyed it" because it isn't exactly meant as entertainment. I can say, however, that it is a rewarding experience and a film that I'd definitely like to see again.
I saw this last year on the big screen. Fun experience to see a Tarkovsky in a theater. Overall, I didn't care for it as much as I hoped I would. I enjoyed Stalker and Ivan's Childhood and think Solaris is one of the best sci-fi films ever made but I didn't quite click with Nostalghia.

Is the scene you're talking about the final scene?

Are there that many new Criterion collectors that only got into them on blu-ray? I think that's great there's new fans but that still kinda blows my mind.

I still buy DVDs of Criterion films that have no BD release yet also. But I also have no problems with still buying DVDs in general either. For example I knew Spartacus was getting a 4K BD, I still chose to go with the Criterion DVD instead.

Actually I never collected dvd's since in those days I didn't earn money by myself, and my parents had a Mom and pop video rental store, so I just watched everything I could.

Then I decided to start collecting blu-rays but never heard of Criterion(well I did see some of their movies as I remember that old animated logo on the beginning of several films I saw via, let's say some unofficial channels) until it was announced they were going to release the Charlie Chaplin films.

And so I grabbed Modern Times and M on my first B&N sale (just realized that is when I joined this site), and started having curiosity for all the other Blu-ray titles of them, that at the time was not such a big number.

Since then I have discovered a lot of great films that weren't even on my radar so I am grateful for Criterion even if they release things like Jellyfish Eyes JK (haven't seen it yet)

Speaking of Chaplin, finally got this in the mail:

I hope to one day when all his films and shorts are released, to see everything in order while catching up with the book.

Here is the promo video:

When I finished my home theater in the basement a couple of years ago I set out to establish a collection of the "best" films. I started by getting titles from the AFI list and those with exceptional PQ/AQ. That's when I discovered the Sight and Sound list and that Criterion had many in their catalog.

I bought a few blus and was hooked. I now have over 300 Criterions primarily blu-rays but 20 or so DVDs. 99% of my titles are blind buys and I'm working on watching about 2-3 a week.

I've always been a collector: UK basketball memorabilia, Easton Press books, etc. This was the next step for me with film.

Yes, the final scene -
[Show spoiler]the candle in the pool scene. I thought it was incredibly powerful.

I "discovered" Criterion back in 2011 when I already had a BD player so all my Criterion films are BDs. There are films that I want that are only available on DVD but I'm waiting for the eventual upgrade.

I've mostly been a Blu-ray exclusive Criterion collector. I had the Fear and Loathing DVD, but really got into it with The Thin Red Line and The Third Man. Now, I have a ton of Criterion Blus, along with a few Eclipse sets and The Human Condition DVD.
