Criterion got a lot of flack the last time they tried to use them and ended up re-releasing a number of titles in plastic cases as a result (or was it all of them?).

I still have quite a few digipacks sitting on my shelf that I wish I had in plastic case form but have not gotten around to "upgrading".
Same, I wouldn't mind maybe 2-3 digipaks a year only & the rest in plastic cases. ill buy a digipak if I have absolutely no choice though.

I am a huge fan of the films that were created during the years of the Hays Production Code.

Here's how I see it...

I've participated in web forums that are strictly moderated to discourage abusive language and lewdness, and I've also participated in web forums where anything goes. It's actually more fun to participate in the forums that are moderated, because part of the fun is seeing the creative ways that people use to get around the rules.

The films that were created during the Production Code years were fun in the same sort of way, because, as WonderWeasel posted above, the creativity used to bring certain plot elements to the screen was fun to watch.

There's a great scene in Casablanca where Rick (Bogart) and Ilsa (Bergman) start to embrace and kiss in their room at night, the shot transitions to a lighthouse tower, and then cuts back to Rick and Ilsa after they're done. Every adult in the audience understands what the scene implies, but it's done in a way that people of all ages can enjoy the film.

I mainly meant worn edges/corners, and I have many worn edges in cardboard cases or thick paper covers in old cds, books, DVDs..
(and I didn't use them regularly. They were in the shelf)
While the regular cases remain in pristine condition!

Not to mention that with digipacks it's a gamble.
I got my Fanny and Alexander with squeezed corners.

Also, i have another digipack (not Criterion) that has literally fall apart.
The plastic that held the discs has unglued from the cardboard!
Also, just got Batman TV boxset, and was already unglued in places!

So, there you are.

See I've never had these problems myself except for night if the hunter which I replaced for $5 and came perfect.

I've said many times I've had more cracked/snapped plastic cases and it's so annoying lol...

They just need to do normal digital releases and sell a plastic case replacement case with artwork on their site.

Everyone's a winner.

I believe that this improved-website-related problem may at last be fixed. Additional DVDs after the first item seem once again to be charged at an extra $0.99 for shipping, and not at the rate applicable to a hardback book. To resolve the problem has taken a mere three months.

Yeah but at the same time, there were no more balls out crazy movies being made like the ones during the pre code era like SAFE IN HELL, CALL HER SAVAGE, NIGHT NURSE, BABY FACE or THREE ON A MATCH.

I thought about buying one of the replacement cases once--forget which movie. Then I realized I'd be paying $5 for packaging.

And the implied sexual relationship between Joel Cairo and his walking cane in The Maltese Falcon. I almost wish I'd remained unaware of that subtext since I can't watch that scene between Lorre and Bogart anymore without marveling at John Huston's audacity.

Other examples of great innuendo: Barbara Stanwyck examining the size and heft of Barry Sullivan's pistol in Sam Fuller's Forty Guns, and Monty Clift and John Ireland emptying their pistols together in Howard Hawks' Red River.

They also subtly suggested Cairo was gay because of his gardenia perfume. Quite clever!

I LOVE digipaks. I wish they could all be digipaks. They're much nicer looking and the fact that they're delicate makes me appreciate them more.

::EDIT::
Not a big fan of digibooks though.

Yes...and in some ways I also like the industry's moral guidelines of the time, which is probably impossible to replicate in today's culture, where pretty much anything goes.

Can a time like that come back again, when society is less immoral?

Sorry, I'm being a bit philosophical...

But as much as production code is a hinderance, I can also see it as a creative challenge to push the limits using subtle inferences and innuendo but not being so obvious like everything nowadays is, regarding sexuality and violence in cinema.

It's fun to watch the '31 and '41 versions back to back. Dwight Frye as Wilmer!
I do hope Criterion gives us some Pre-code films. A personal favorite of mine is The Story of Temple Drake but there are so many good ones to choose from.
